Default Colt SAA from 1899

Got my Colt SAA today. It's very nice and I'm extremely happy with it.
It letters as a .45 Colt caliber, 4 3/4" barrel, blue, stocks not listed (they are the period rubber stocks), and was shipped to Simmons Hardware, St. Louis, MO in May 1899.

Bill, we need to see a few pictures of that Peacemaker! Colt turned out some of their most beautifully finished revolvers during that turn-of-the-century era!

If the stocks aren't listed, they're almost certainly the standard hard rubber grips. Can't wait to see it!

Here it is: It has a 2nd Generation cylinder in it, so I should be able to shoot "smokeless" cowboy loads with no problems.

Nice one. If the cylinder is 2nd generation (with the rampant colt stamped on the rear) someone beveled the front edges, unless the cylinder is from the 1873/1973 .45 Colt Centennial which was beveled.

Just one year earlier and you would have a certified EXEMPTED antique that the Feds won't ever touch. At least until the knuckleheads in Congress finds out that guns dating to 1898 and earlier are truly Ghost Guns.

Took the gun to the range this morning for a workout. It shot good, although I had trouble seeing the sights and holding it steady.
I also tried my set of Sambar Stag grips on it, and they fit almost perfectly, so I'm going to keep them on the gun for the time being.

Great find Bill. Here are a couple of my Pre War .45s with stag grips.

Those stags are as good as they get. Sambar stag is my fave grip material.

Very very cool.

The only Colt I ever lettered is a New Service from 1902. It also shipped to Simmons Hardware. I think fully half of the Colt letters I see online are to Simmons Hardware. That place sold a literal ton of Colts.

I did the same with a couple of early 1980s Colt SAAs I bought new at Sportmart, which is a chain that's long gone. They were both blue, .44Spl with 5.5" barrel. The blue was gorgeous, and the case colors on the frames were vibrant. I never turned them, intending to flip them a few years later. I did that, but now wish I had them back.

The Ruger single actions may be sturdy, excellent guns, but the Colt SAA is in a class by itself.

^^^^Good show. I had two, now just one. That's OK. Interests changed over time and I 'chalk it up' to luck that they were both from the same distributor...no way I planned that. It was about a decade ago, but if you called Colt (maybe longer than a decade [?]) they would tell you over the phone or at least did so when I asked kindly. No letters though.

Was this gun the topic of a thread on the Colt Forum recently ?
