Default Ruger Security Six - 6" blued **NEW PICS**

Picked this up today from the Gun Library. The first new gun I've seen in there in maybe 6 months that I (or probably most folks) would have any interest in. And the old stock keeps hanging in there (a bunch of Ruger single actions, some Buckmarks, some expensive 1911s) and they're under a strict "no discounts" policy. Despite the fact that I shouldn't have, I forked over $499 + tax. Given the price on almost everything else, I was surprised it was marked at "only" $499. A year ago I wouldn't have paid more than $400-425 OTD, but those days seem to be gone. But since it was not priced outrageously, I figured WTH. I will say that it's by far the nicest blued Security Six that I've seen in the wild, with maybe 2 or 3 others in 4" that come to mind in the last five years or so since I've taken a real interest in revolvers, and those had definitely seen better days. There's one at a local pawn shop right now with wear, some ugly spots, a touch of rust, and not so nice aftermarket grips, asking $649. I don't think so. Not a big fan of 6" 357s, but I think the Security Six in 6" may be better proportioned than the 4". YMMV. Website dates it to 1982.

Anyway, I'll give it a good cleaning and some RenWax tonight

Excellent gun at an excellent price! Congratulations.

A few years back I picked up a stainless 2.75Ē Security Six mint in a perfect box and paid - gasp! - $500.00. People thought I had for sure lost my ever-loviní mind and look at those prices now!

Even if you shoot that gun a lot itíll always be worth what you paid for it. And if you want to add a period correct box; those arenít hard to come by or expensive either.

Ruger Security, and Speed Sixes have been climbing for a while. People are starting to appreciate how tough, and easy they are to maintain. They are aaccurate as all get out. I have the stainless version, and it will not be leaving anytime soon.

My first revolver was a 6" SS Security Six, still have it and it's the revolver I've judged all others by for > 35 years.
LOL, I can count my Ruger revolvers on my fingers, from memory, I need a spread sheet to keep track of my Smiths.

Nice revolver. I am a fan of Ruger and would have bought it as fast as I could have grabbed my wallet for what you paid.

Nice find I seen a Ď77 Police Service six gf-32 357/ 2 3/4Ē barrel in stainless for $750 it sold quick. The gf-32 was never offered in the catalog. The Ď76 gf-32 had the bi centennial scrip. I caught my LGS putting the same security six 6Ē revolver in the case I didnít give it a chance to grow roots I snatched it up. I found the correct box on eBay. Never pass up these rugerís there guns are built like Mack truck tough.

We donít see the older s&w, colt or ruger revolvers everyday. At least I donít.

I don't either, which is why over the last 8-10 months I've picked up the ones I've seen so long as they were in at least very good condition and the price wasn't too crazy. They used to be much more common and you could pass on one and find another next month, but not any more.

Fine looking revolver and a good find. I’ve owned and parted with several Security Sixes in the past, all 4” guns. Last year I bought my first 6” from a friend who was trying to raise some cash. I too paid $500, and intended to sell it for the same as I really didn’t have a need for the gun. Then I went and shot it. Wow!! This one is so accurate that “need” didn’t matter. Bought different grips, a holster, and think it’s found a permanent home. Mine, like the OP’s, has the scalloped recoil shield that I prefer.

The Security Six will take a LOT of shooting. Enjoy!

Dan

I meant to point out the scalloped recoil shield in my OP (but probably stalled out when I couldn't think of the word "scalloped"), later to be seen on the awesome GP100, and which I also happen to prefer.

A pretty good find these days. This specimen is in very nice condition.
Your post reminds me of days gone by and some great deals to be had.
In 1971, I was part way through my rookie year as a LEO in the SF Bay Area. A Ruger flier showed up at the department advertising their new Ruger Security Six. They were attempting to break into the DA market to compete with S&W and Colt.
The limited time police introductory price was $97 for a 2 3/4, 4, or 6 inch. Having already spent my initial $600 clothing and equipment allotment for the first year on the job, I had to wait a month and half for my subsequent allotment of $350 per year.
I placed my order direct to Ruger as a LEO and bought one of each. Total $291 and free shipping to my local gun shop if I went in and showed my badge and ID when my order arrived.
That left me with $59 to carry over to the following year.
I was as pleased as punch.
6 years ago, I found a S/S Service Six .38 4" with fixed sights and a bobbed hammer, a true DA Only. $335 plus shipping. I had to have it. It came with genuine Pachmayr Gripper Grips with finger groves.
My son and I took it out in the woods to give it a go. He always likes to challenge the old man, so he put out some orange clays at varying distances, one at 50 yards. I started with the one at 50 yards. Yes, these Rugers are very accurate. I sighted in, took up the slack on that DA and the very first shot from a gun new to me, was a hit and a busted clay. What great fun.

Love the Security Six!
I have two. A 2.75" stainless and a 4" blue. Been keeping my eyes open for a 6" to go with them.
You got an excellent revolver at a fair price. Enjoy!
I've always said that the worst mistake Ruger ever made was discontinuing the Six Series revolvers.

Yep, $323 these days for that, is a darn good buy. I like them for their ruggedness...and simplicity.
My wife has a blued .38 Speed Six in 3" and a S/S Security Six .357 in 4".
I snagged a blued .357 Security Six in 4" about 5 years ago for $275.

I fully agree.
I feel the same way about certain motor vehicles, but that's for a different thread.

My Police Service six gf32 has the 200th script and I have others made in 1976 with the script. The gf32 was never in the catalog. I seen a Ď77 gf32 no script sell for $750. Our scripts are collectable. My sil said they would never be worth anything back in Ď76. Ya.

Default Another 76 gun

Here's my 1976 RST-6. Excellent condition, box even has the grease pencil serial number clearly visible.

Funny thing is that I bought it from a LGS and didn't notice it was a Bicentennial gun until I logged it in my catalogue.

Most of the retailers around here are out of used guns. No one is trading them in anymore.

The 357 magnums in colt, s&w and ruger were always tough to find used.

I follow the online guns for sale sights it’s slim pickings but what is offered is over priced.
