Savage 99 358 Win - finally
This morning I went back to the show in Centralia to buy the Marlin 336 35 Rem for $600 I should have bought yesterday. Got to the show and it was long gone. I was getting ready to leave, but decided to make another spin around the show just in case I missed something.
About half way through, I stopped at a table that had a bunch of 99s; of course they were all in 300 savage. The elderly gentleman asked what I was looking for and I replied, “a 99 in 358 Win., but I haven’t see one in 25 years.” He reached under the table and pulled out this pristine 99 in .358. He laughed, “can’t say that now.” He told me he bought it new in ‘78 and other then wiping it down with oil once in awhile, it’s remained in his safe, unfired. Although to me it doesn’t quite have the je ne sais quois of an earlier model F or EG model with cut checkering, I wasn’t going to leave this one behind.

I don't remember seeing a model 99 before that didn't have all the bluing worn off the bottom of the receiver from guys carrying it.

Me neither. My 1899’s (great grandfather’s) bluing is long gone and it was rebarreled from .303 Savage to 30-30. Still very accurate and the action is smooth as butter.

I like .358 Winchesters. I once owned a Browning all steal BLR in .358 Winchester that I wish I never parted company with. A great carry and saddle gun.
Your find is hard to come by now days and a definite keeper. CONGRATULATIONS!

Last summer I stupidly snoozed on a Stainless BLR in 358 at a local pawn shop for $700. After this morning I am not as sad.

Nice rifle! I do have to say, I like the Savages! My featherweight is in 243 Win. and the G and EG are both in 300.

What a beautiful gun. 358 was made for the NW.

Very nice!
A friend of mine just bought a pre-64 Win. model 88 in .358, and while it's nice, I don't like those nearly as well as the 99 or the BLR.

358 Winchester, an unappreciated but excellent cartridge. I'm a fan of 35 Rem, 358 Win, and 350 Rem Mag. There are some custom AR builders converting the AR10s' to 358 Win. Just takes a custom barrel swapped in as the AR10 is already setup for 308 Win.

I have one of those. I bought it from a whole saler in Shotgun News about 1979 or 80. I think he said they were discontinued. I have always though Savage 99s were neat rifles. The top tang safety is a huge plus for lefties. I do not hunt, and did not need that rifle. But I liked it so I bought it. I may have put 100 rounds thru it, but I am not sure. I think I have less than $200.00 in it. I few months later, I walked into a gun store and they had the same rifle in .250 Savage on the rack. It still had the factory tags on the lever. They did not know if it had been shot or not, but it looked new. So I bought it also. I have not shot it yet, but keep thinking I will someday. Enjoy your new rifle, it is a fine piece of machinery.

I’d like one in 250-3000. They’re pretty common, probably 2nd easiest to find after the 300 Savage.

Nice rifle! I’ve got one in .308 Winchester (only Savage I have). Spare mags are hard to find (and expensive when you do find them).

So how many 99"s were produced in .358 Winchester. Are production numbers known?

I have no idea. I just know I see 99s in all the available chamberings except 358 and 284.

the “Model A” is the coolest later tang safety 99, in my opinion. I think it was made to be reminiscent of the pre war Featherwights with straight grip and no checkering. The .358 must be the hardest Model A to find.
