My Remington 870 Wingmaster has been my HD companion for 35 years. It will now get a break from that duty. I have finally found a dealer who just got in what I have been looking for, for many months. The Mossberg 590 A-1 (51663). 9-shot, heavy walled barrel, 2 3/4" - 3" chamber, ghost ring sights, bayonet lug, and sling swivels. I will most likely get a simple narrow sling for it, and I might get a bayonet just for ***** and giggles. She will be coming home to begin her tour of duty next week.
Here she is.

http://www.mossberg.com/images...ns/930/NEW/51663.jpg

The old Wingmaster looks as good as the day I got it, and will now be cleaned up, oiled, and put in the back of the safe. Maybe some years from now, I may take up bird hunting again. The new dog has only one purpose, and that is to keep me and mine safe. I think it will serve it's purpose well.

That 870 was my very first firearm of any kind. I got it when I was 15 years old. It has been by my side for 36 years! No, she aint going anywhere anytime soon! I'm just giving her a well deserved rest.

Congrats

It's funny how some firearms come into our life and never leave.

I am now in search of the proper bayonet with which to adorn it. I was told that the basic M-16 bayonet would be the proper fit. It most likely would never be mounted (fixed), but it would be cool to have one. You know, in case the zombies come!

I used to have a 590. Solid enough gun. Mine was electroless nickel for that extra ghetto fabulousness.

Any M16/M4 bayonet will work on your gun. If you want to go cheap, but workable, put an M7 bayonet on there. If you want the latest and greatest, the new bayonet that the Marines have is quite nice, that'll run you about 130ish. A version can be had with a Ronald Reagan quote on it. The Army also has the new M10 bayonet, so don't over pay for an M9 bayonet.

I had the dubious honor of witnessing an attempted bayoneting once (long story), thus have a respect for them. I keep M7s around for all my ARs.

...my 870 was my first too...bought with pay from my first job out of high school to shoot clays with some of the guys I worked with...I was about 20 then so I've had mine 36 years too. I have a Mossberg too...500 with pistol grip only (ouch)...

Why did you go with the Mossberg, not another 870? I am looking for a new shotgun also.

Hi Marshall 357. Welcome to the forum.

I wanted a shotgun that was to be for one purpose, that is, to be a working shotgun. The 590 A-1 Mossbergs are the shotgun of choice for many military and LE applications. They are built plenty strong, and had the features that I wanted. Specifically the ghost ring sights, and the one piece 9-shot tube magazine. It also has a heavy walled barrel, which adds a bit of weight up front. I asked a lot of questions of people that have them, and was told that the 590s are built tough.

My 870 is a beautiful gun with the original wood that is much nicer than the wood they are using these days. I really want to keep it looking great. It is a classic Wingmaster. I could have purchased another 870 with a synthetic stock, and a mag. tube extension. I didn't think that it looked all that good with the added on mag extension tube. The 870 did not come with the ghost ring sights either. It was also more expensive than the Mossberg. Plus, I already have an 870!

I would not lose any sleep if the Mossberg got a few dings or scratches in the finish. It was bought to be a working gun.

There is one other feature that played into my decision. The metal shell lifter that lifts the shell up into chambering position on the 870 is a solid piece. If (and thats a big if) a shell somehow double fed (never happened with my 870, but I guess it could), jamming up the gun, I would have to take some time to clear it. The lifter on the Mossberg is skeletonized, and one needs only stick a finger in there and push that round back into the magazine tube.

So, I guess the short answer is that the Mossberg had everythinng that I wanted in a defensive shotgun, it comes highly reccomended with regard to reliability and strength, and was less expensive than the 870. It also looks like one mean SOB!

CG2.

It was not easy finding the exact model I was looking for. I went to all the FFL dealers and gunshops in the state, and told them to call me if one surfaced. 4 months later, I got a call from one of them, and snagged it. Just about everything is back-ordered right now, so I actually got lucky.

The dealer said that he got a call from one of his distributors saying that he had a Mossberg. The store owner told him that he didn't care what model it was, just to send it. It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for, so he gave me a call. Pure luck I guess.

My goodness that sure is purty I'm glad the holy grail was finally found - congrats. I have an 870 Wingmaster sitting in my safe. It was my Fathers. It has a carved stock (he was a woodcarver).

Hopefully we will be at the range at the same time soon. The weather sure is improving. I'll bring it along two weekends from now to put it through it's paces!

I have a 590A1 like yours. One of the things I liked about it was the top mounted safety. It is great for left handed people. I think the front sling mount seems kind of weak. Other then that I am happy with it.

Waldo,
I notice in your picture that there seems to be an "in the white" type outline of the weld that attaches the parts to the barrel. I noticed this on mine when I saw it at the gunshop and wondered if it was a manufacturing defect, or if that's the way they are made. Looks like they are all like that. Sort of a lighter, unfinished seam where the sights and such are welded to the barrel.

Waldo, that full-stocked A5 has my interest... happy with my bob-barrel JC Higgins, but it would sure be nice to find one like that. The Browning A5 was the first shotgun that ever caught my eye, way back when I was a kid.

When I finally tired of my kid sniveling and whining over being left handed in a right handed world, I gave him my 590 due to the ambi top of tang safety. I'd already put the Knoxx comp stock on it, as well as a Tritium front blade. He's even used it for skeet shooting when he feels like terrorizing friends. I got him the bayonet for it on his last birthday. I figure the next time he's out powdering clays, he can stick it in the dirt for a convenient "stand". Damned fine gun!

Wheelgunner, I had to special order that gun. Most dealers did not carry them. They all wanted to sell me Model 500s. I have only seen 2 or 3 like mine. they all had the same light colored welds. I have had it about 2 years and have not seen another one for sale.
Roose, I walked into a gun store one day and saw that gun on the rack. It was not imported by Browning. It was made by FN in Belgium. Supposedly sent to Africa. Then imported into this country by Century Arms. I have only seen 4 or 5 of them. I talked to a guy from Century at Knob Creek once. He told me they had only imported a few hundred of them.

I have not shot it in a couple of years. I think it was 8 in the tube + 1 in chamber for a total of 9. But it might be 7 +1. I would have to load it to be sure. I have not seen a lot of info on these.

I have the 890 in your configuration for my home defense shot gun. I cut off the bayonet lug to allow installation of a Shur Fire forend. The bright light and 8+1 capacity, along with the ghost ring sights are great.

Mine came with a speed stock this holds 4 additional rounds. I keep loaded with #4 buck and slugs in stock. This gun is very heavy loaded and absorbs recoil really well. My wife can handle this shotgun just fine.

Congrats on your new shotgun.

The catalog states that it's 8+1 if using 2 3/4" shells, and 7+1 if using the 3" shells.

Thanks Happy Hunter.

Wow...nice piece.

I've got a Mossberg 500 but she's not nearly as slick as that one. we are going to need a range report.

Don't forget when using your shotgun and bayonet that if you get your bayonet stuck in something you can just pull the trigger and use the recoil to break it free. A 12 gauge is much better at this than a 5.56mm...

Bassamatic, you can count on a range report. I am looking forward to dialing in that ghost ring sight for slugs and ooo buck, but not looking forward to the bruised shoulder which is likely to result!

Careby, the only way I could ever see that scenario playing out is if we were right all along, and there is a zombie outbreak!

Don't forget when using your shotgun and bayonet that if you get your bayonet stuck in something you can just pull the trigger and use the recoil to break it free.
My dad said that his Navy DI told him the same thing in 1942, while using the M1 Garand.

I always figured that if I needed to use the pig sticker, I wouldn't have any more bollitts...

I wouldn't underestimate the bayonet if you can get some decent training on its use. While not commonly used, it does have its place. And you won't have to worry about over-penetrating your walls. A quarter-turn of your weapon left or right will break it free and open the wound.

I have spent most of my life closing up wounds. I pray I never have to cause one that severe. Actually, i think blades are more dangerous than firearms. They are always loaded!

BTW, She gets to come home tomorrow! (The gun, not the bayonet.)

I guess it will be a Pumper-not nickel hold the bayo!!!

OK, that was pretty bad even by my low standards!

ParadiseRoad,
It appears that if one were to be on the receiving end of that, there would be no need to try to close up any wounds! Vicious looking little weapon!
