Default Skimpy Ruger American stock now "fixed" with Tourbon stock cover

Got a Ruger American 5.56 NATO bolt action rifle that accepts standard AR magazines. Great gun at a great price. 16.125" barrel is 1:8 twist and quite accurate with 69 gr. Sierra BTHP bullets. But the stock was too short and the comb too low.

Ordered a Tourbon stock cover made for .22 rifles. It added about an inch to the length of pull and about 3/4" to the comb. Now when I mount the rifle to my shoulder with eyes closed the scope is positioned perfectly.

At $49 dollars the Tourbon is a bit pricey for the only fair quality of the materials -- but it does what I needed it to do. Also, left hand shooters like me will be glad to know that the .22 cartridge holder sewn into the right side of the cover does not interfere with the face when shooting from the left side.

I am hoping that the now correct fit will let me reduce the 100 yard groups from 1" to 0.75" or better.

I want to get a soft leather lace to replace the very unsatisfying lace that came with the Tourbon

I'm curious if perhaps the scope mount is the reason for a higher comb and length of pull. Seems to me the scope eyepiece is set too high and too far back. The scope mount looks like a cantilever mount for an AR rather than a bolt rifle. One rough rule of thumb is the back of the eyepiece is generally found over the trigger. Also the lower the scope is mount, the better - usually.

No criticism intended, this may be what works for you. We're all different!

I'm going to guess that big scope doesn't have much eye relief at the long end, so the OP had to mount it a ways back. Me? I'd go for a less ambitious scope and mount it way lower and further forward.

As for the OP's requirement for a longer LOP, let's just say that one shooting position does not work for all. This may be true for scopes, too.

All that said, it is a constant annoyance to me as a milsurp collector to repeatedly find a non-matching Long buttstock on an otherwise mint No4 Enfield because a previous owner liked the LOP to stretch across a couple of zip codes.
