I had one of these that was minus the handguard. The price of an original handguard is often the same as the gun itself. After years of looking I found a handguard for sale for $800. I paid $175 for the gun. Both the handguard owner and myself are military collectors and both wanted to see the gun complete. So we did the only logical thing to be done. We flipped a coin to see who would buy the others half and complete the project. Dang he has a nice complete trench gun now.

The first shotgun I ever fired was a trench gun in MP School (1973 @ Ft. Gordon, GA). I wish I could remember what make it was.

Like your 520-30 big1911. Very nice. Working on a repro now. Previously I’ve built a Winchester Model 12 trench and a M12 riot.

I’ve got the Winchester Model 12 Riot Gun, complete with my agency’s name on the left side of the receiver. No trench guns though (except for my IAC 97 repro).

I have a Stevens model 77C riot gun that used to belong to the Baltimore PD. A friend bought it at a Baltimore city surplus equipment auction, I bet they don't do that anymore, kept it for a while and then sold it to me.
It's a beast with magnum, slug, or buckshot loads but not too bad with regular loads.
Reminds me of the Stevens shotguns we used in Nam.

This is my repro combat shotgun. I used it on active duty to train students in the use of the Combat Shotgun.

When I was in Vietnam in 68-69, we had a 97 Winchester in my platoon. What it was doing there I have no idea, but it was carried by a Sgt E6 named Jimmy Walkup. He was maybe 20 years old and on his second tour. I didn't have an appreciation for the gun then, just saw it as another shotgun.

Have a picture of my Father-In-Law on a ship standing guard in Korea. He is carrying an M1897. Canfield put it in his book on Combat Shotguns.

Found the picture.

The ones I saw were carried by American and Vietnamese MPs and other base personnel that I met at China Beach. They were being replaced with newer shotguns like the 870M out in the field but the Corps hates to get rid of functioning firearms and is the last service to get new stuff so I also saw some military model Winchester 97s and 12s, and Remington model 10s still being used while I was there.
Here's an interesting article on Vietnam era shotguns.

I have an older department store 520 that has its original 30” front half, and also an orphaned front half from a Stevens 620 that I shortened to 20” and fit to the 520 action.

Had not thought of China Beach in a long time. We would go there when we were able to do so.

This is my version of the USMC 870 MK 1. I built it up when I was teaching Combat Shotgun on active duty.

When I collected U.S. military shotguns, I had a U.S. marked Stevens 520, but never the trench gun version.

I fired a Wicnhester 1200 at FT Gordon in 69. Could be what you shot also. It was probably not a "trench gun" as the ones I saw at Gordon and in Vietnam did not have the heat shield or bayonet lug. Just a riot gun.

The stockade sat behind my BCT barracks and the guards carried riot guns, though I have no idea of the model. 1968 Ft. Gordon, GA.

In the early 1990's just after Desert Storm, I was the active duty 1stSgt. for a Reserve MP Company. We had a familiarization fire as an annual requirement with shotguns for the Company. Took them to an Reserve Army base in northern WVA. The armorer took along five Winchester 1200's. Before we were half way through the five were down for having pins and screws coming loose or falling out (of course they were in the dirt/grass, god knows where). I had my 870 that is pictured and we used that to finish the shoot. Must have fired about a thousand rounds through that 870 and it never missed a beat. The company CO requested the USMC M870 MK 1's, but was told no and was issued Mossberg 590's. I told him they were a good shotguns (had shot the 500 version at Security Force Battalion Schools).
