Just got a new 6 inch Colt Python. So far just fired 38 special wad cutters through it. Very sweet shooting gun and very accurate. At $1469 BNIB, just too good to pass up! Cleans up nicely too. I don’t know if it’s the slick stainless finish but the cylinder burn rings just wiped right off with a rag and little Ballistol. This particular Python was manufactured in 2021. Anyhow, I think it’s a pretty good deal, maybe half of what you’d pay for an older used one, not that I wouldn’t mind one!

Well, glad you like it, and no disrespect. However, the examples I've seen of the new Colts can in no way compare to the "originals". And Colt suffered for years skirting around S&W's patents, the Python and Diamondback lockwork was butter smooth, but very fragile in comparison. A long time LE friend just had to have a Python in the 70's, but was truly disappointed to find it was "out of time in less than 1000 rounds". He traded it straight up for a 4" Model 28-2. That gun has a bajillion rounds through it, and I now own it after his passing. Still perfectly in time.

One day I’d love to acquire a 6 inch royal blue python for limited shooting and I’d use my current new python as a shooter and plinker. I believe the new pythons now have the bugs worked out (factory is now putting thread locker on the side plate screws so they don’t work loose allowing the side plate to come off and tie up action). I think these new ones are going to make great shooters with no worry about decreasing the value like the older beautiful pythons.

Funny you mention the S&W Model 28-2. I’m in the process of acquiring right now. Excellent revolver.

Congrats! I have both the old and the new, and the new one is every bit as good as the original!

Congratulations. I suspect you're going to like that one. Unlike it seems a lot of people here, I can like both Colt and Smith and Wesson revolvers and I really like the Python (old and new). If there is anything wrong with either of them, I'm not smart enough to tell it. They both seem to shoot just fine. I doubt I'll ever shoot any of them enough to wear one out.

Congrats on your new Python! The old design Python did have a bit of a delicate lock work and would go out of time with extensive rapid double action firing. The new design Python has a different lock work and is far more robust.

Yeah… I took the plunge and bought a new 4” Python. Never knew if I would or would not but previous old model Pythons I have owned had such critical timing that I did not have confidence they would hold up and I do not work on Colt revolvers.

Welcome to the “New Python” club!
I found my 4” at a gun show last weekend. Royal Blue or nickel finish notwithstanding and contrary to some of the above statements, I find the new Pythons are put together very nicely and the semi-bright stainless finish sure makes cleaning and holster wear a non issue - fit and finish are extraordinary and the interchangeable front sight is appreciated. Trigger was a little heavy, but smooooth and there’s little to no stacking. Overall I think it carries on the Python family name quite well and there’s no silly lock or homely two-piece barrels. As with the new Smiths, I don’t think the new Python will hurt the value of the classics.

I’ll be looking for a 2 1/2 or 3 inch in all flavors should Colt make them. Please make them Colt.
For now I’m stuck with a new 4 inch and my old Coltguard 6 inch.

I will most likely buy one when I eventually run into one , but not for $2500 that I have been seeing locally.The new one seems to be built to a more reasonable level to handle magnums rounds without needing a tuneup. As for the older ones I cannot justify the money the get for a gun that is delicate at times when used accordingly like other brands, where no one seems to be able to work on them. I know Python owners will deny this but do talk about it being a problem on the Colt forum.

I once had a Python that came off Colt's assembly line on Dec. 22, 1966.







I never fired the revolver myself. Just admired it. The target says it would shoot lights out.

Colt's will need service more often than Smith & Wesson's. Not because they are more delicate but because the older ones were built to much tighter tolerances than Smith's. Wear that sends a Colt out of spec won't on a Smith. The problem I have with older Colt's is finding somebody to work on them if you shoot them a lot.

A Rolex requires more service than a Bulova, even though they may both keep time equally well from a practical standpoint.

I too am primarily a S&W aficionado with N & L frames being my personal favorites but I will say this new 6 inch Python is a very well made gun and balances quite well in my hand. This is only the second Colt revolver I’ve owned (previously had a detective special).

While I own mostly S&W revolvers, I do have Ruger and now Colt revolvers. I will make room for all of them!

The worst problem you will have is the need for a bigger safe.

I have found some love for all of them; even Taurus

I have a Ruger Service Six and numerous Ruger Single action revolvers both rimfire and centerfire.

The only Colt revolver I owned was a Trooper. OK gun, but couldn't hold a candle to a 28 for ergonomics and smoothness/slickness of action.

I know some guys love Colt snake named guns. And that's cool, to each his own.

But to me, nothing beats a Smith wheelgun.

I'm really not a fan of the vent rib barrels on handguns. To me, it's just silly. But, how many guns are more of a sure thing for an investment, than a Colt snake gun of any type? I've never seen one depreciate, that's for sure.
I'm really considering buying a couple of these new Colts, just for investment....and to shoot, too.
