Default Please help me identify this S&W copy Model 19?

Looking for some information on this um, revolver...

Says S&W all over, chambered in .357 according to my friend..

I know enough to know this is not what it looks like...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, also a value would help.

Thanks

It’s a knock-off/trademark infringement, probably made in the Khyber Pass or the Philippines. Nothing about it is S&W and a legitimate manufacturer wouldn’t falsify the markings.

Astra was my first thought too but …. The Astra’s I’ve seen were clearly marked as such.

95% sure that is a very early Taurus. Possibly built with leftover Smith parts from when they took over the plant in Brazil

Looks SO VERY MUCH like a Taurus that I have from the 1980's. There are three things that are nearly exactly the same as on a Taurus that I have.

First are the horizontal lines in the cylinder flutes.
Second is the texturing on the top strap.
Last is the shape of the hammer.

I must say that I don't know who has the skill to put the S&W "four lines" on the right side or the S&W emblem on the left, but that revolver must be an imposter.

Compare these photos…

OP’s gun:

Genuine S&W:

Please help me identify this S&W copy Model 19?-4e00ab1f-1e72-49dc-9927-fed19996b88e-jpg

Notice the shape of the front of the sideplate and the 4 line address. Also look at the shape of the trigger guard where it meets the frame. I’ll add that S&W didn’t offer a 2-1/2” model 19 until 1966. None had an upper sideplate screw.

Also look here:

OP’s gun..

Genuine S&W:
Please help me identify this S&W copy Model 19?-fc1763d0-cff1-441e-9875-f485fc4c0fe4-jpg

Notice the elector rod, the shape of the rib near the frame, the depth of the front of the frame and the location of the barrel pin.

There’s no way this was made by S&W or on their tooling.

It's not a genuine S&W, that's about all I can say for certain. The cylinder flutes do look similar to those of Taurus revolvers of the 1970's.

I would also say, the barrel is not original to the frame on that gun. look at the sight alignment; the front sights are a Baughman-style ramp made for a revolver with adjustable rear sights. That's one reason the interface of barrel and frame don't match up. It's like putting a M19 barrel on a M10 frame. I'm betting that frame once had a longer barrel mated to it, somebody wanted a snub nose and found the S&W barrel. Since it fits, I'd say the frame is Taurus, if not a S&W.

What does the SN look like on the bottom of the butt?

He is taking the gun back to the feller he got it from and returning it 100%

The trigger guard, trigger, hammer, and the grooved cylinder flutes scream "Taurus" to me. After a second look so do the grips. If I had to make an educated guess I'd say it's a Taurus Model 80 IIRC, that was the Taurus designation for their fixed sight, tapered barrel 38. (A Taurus "Model 10" if you will.)

I've owned several from that time period (late 70's early 80's). Never seen a barrel like that on a Taurus though. Most likely as others have said, a replacement. They also made a Model 65, a fixed sight 357 too, but the ones I've seen were from a later time period and had a different trigger/hammer, but they may have made them earlier than ones I've seen (early 90's).

That's no Taurus. Even older Taurus guns aren't that rough. A couple older Taurus .44s I have rival my S&Ws in fit and finish. I second the Khyber Pass origin instead.

The gun is a knockoff of an S&W done by maybe a Spanish company from the 1950s or 60s. I know I have seen those lines in the cylinder valleys of early Taurus's before.
The letter scares me to think an S&W employee wouldn't know the difference.

I think Steve @ S&W doesn’t know his butt from his elbow.
The OP’s revolver looks “wrong” in so many ways.

Not sure I'd buy into this being a valid e-mail from S&W.

If I saw any value in going forward with this (which I don't), I'd ask the seller to forward a copy of S&W's original e-mail to me.

Sounds like that message was received by the buyer, not supplied by the seller.

It is I just redacted his information per his request...

My friend sent the pictures of his now previously owned gun and ser # to S&W, this is their response to him...

Maybe a Rossi (Brazil, pre-Taurus)? I sort of remember that early Rossi revolvers also had the grooved cylinder scoops. But I am sure the Rossi revolvers were marked as such. Unbelieveable that anyone at S&W, even if "Steve" is the greenest new hire, would ever mistake it for a S&W.
