I have an OLD Stevens .22 bolt action rifle that has been in the family for over 70 years. It has a 5 round clip and it feeds .22 shorts flawlessly. I buy cases of Dr. Thunder soda at Walmart for around $5 a case and every day I shake one up and throw it up into the yard as far as I can and destroy it with the awesome .22 shorts. Even with the open sights this thing never misses. Usually get at least 4 rounds into the can. Nice part is that my wife and neighbors never have a clue as shorts out of that rifle are super quiet. They do make some shorts now with 1080 fps capability that are almost as loud as the long rifles. What I am trying to say is that there is still enjoyment to be had even with an old gun and little bitty bullets.

As a cartridge collector I have a few things I specialize in. One is boxes of 22 shorts. Just a neat little round, not to be underestimated. One police officer told of the first homicide he investigated. Seems a man was shot through his exterior door with a 22 short and fragmenting gallery bullet. Dead right there. There are several youtube videos testing the 22 short. Quite impressive for the little round.

I don't recall the last decade I saw a box of 22 shorts for sale. On line orders, yea but in a shop in Montana? Not since the year started with 19.

I also enjoy the short .22 for plinking and close work with minimum muzzle report.

My marlin semi will not eject them and my Winchester pump shoots them pretty well but.......
I do get better accuracy if I can find the "Long" .22 ammo for my rifle for
50 foot targets.

I am just glad that they still make the ammo.............
at least before the Virus storm.

Years ago when the kids were growing up, I bought a few bricks of shorts for marksmanship training for them. While going through my .22 ammo stock last year I found a remaining brick of shorts and thought... How will they shoot in my Model 17 and 18 S&W revolvers?

Long story short, I had to raise the rear sight a rotation, and accuracy was not quite up to match ammo, but they go bang and stay inside the 25 yard timed and rapid fire 10 ring if I do my part. Report is mild and recoil is pretty much non-existent.

From time to time I shoot .22 Shorts. I use a Walther OSP. It is a hoot to shoot with a 2 ounce trigger. Infinitely more accurate than I am.

About 5 years ago I was given about 5k .22 shorts from a local woman whose husband had passed.He had a target gun that used them. While they shoot fine in my revolvers..I came across a Minx for cheap last year, as it required .22 shorts. The wife uses it to keep her garden safe and I don't worry about her plinking away...with my "valuable" ammo..

My Winchester '06 (and Marlin 39A) loves shorts. Fill up the tube, and blast away. What is even better though, are the original Aguila Colibris (not the Super Colibris they sell now). While they warn about not using them in a rifle, I have never had one fail to exit the barrel of the '06. They are so quiet that the only thing you hear is the hammer falling on the firing pin, followed by the thunk of the target (assuming you hit it).

I still have a couple of bricks of these, and use them judiciously.

Only a cold warrior

Interestingly the rifling in most guns that were originally chambered for shorts or longs is different than guns chambered for Long Rifle in many cases. Years ago it was common to take such a chambered gun and have it reamed to Long Rifle. Most complained about the loss of accuracy. I collected recovered slugs from game animals. I have well over 100 taken from all sizes of game. I recovered Remington short hollow point fired from a rifle and recovered from a marmot. Classic picture perfect mushroom. I am not sure if anyone but CCI are making hollow points anymore so I would advise to hoard the ones you have and not go plinking with them.

You know, I have shot a few boxes of shorts through my K22. I am constantly amazed at how accurate they are!

When I was a kid, for many years I shot nothing but .22 Shorts. At that time they were a quarter a box at the local mom&pop grocery store. LRs were 40 cents a box, way too expensive for me. I still have a sizeable inventory of .22 Short SV ammo (I have one of those Hi-Standard Olympic Rapid Fire pistols also). I happen to own a Remington 550-1 .22 rifle, and one of its many benefits is that it will function reliably in semiauto mode using .22 Short SVs. Makes about as much noise with those as a pellet or BB gun. In my opinion, there was never a better .22 semiauto rifle made than the Remington 550.

My dad taught me to shoot in our backyard starting in 1959, first with a BB gun, then a bolt action .22 using shorts. I haven’t shot (or seen) them since then. I love them.

Recently saw some Shorts at Sportsman Warehouse.
They kind of stood out, it was the only 22 they had.

I need ammo, not a ride.

I live in a rural area, but close to the "big city". We are absolutely plagued by feral cats. Most likely the spawn of "dumped" cats by the inconsiderate city folks that decided they didn't really need their cat. However, I raise chickens, rabbits, quail, call ducks and etc., and the cats can be a problem. My son has dubbed my Winchester 1890 22 short pump the "Cat-Whacker 2000". No offense to the cat lovers out there, but if they're killin' my critters....

I was in a local Walmart last year for something. I seldom go to Walmart so while there I went by the sporting goods section. They had a bunch of 22 shorts so I bought about 10 boxes. I already had some at the house. They are fun to shoot and my Marlin 39a's shoot them well. They are not for semi auto of course but great for lever and bolt guns.

I really like shooting 22 Shorts. Quieter than a LR load and, at least in my guns quite accurate. I have a Browning Semi Auto rifle that is short only as well as one of the Remington 552 models that shoots shorts, longs and long rifle. Also have a little Astra Cub in 22 short. All are fun and very reliable.

I also shoot shorts out of some of my other guns, mainly revolvers, my 1906 Winchester pump and a couple bolt guns. They can sometimes be hard to find so I tend to horde them. Currently with all ammo hard to find and expensive I haven't seen a lot available other than CCI and Aquila. Most of the CCI has been the CB load which I restrict to the manually operated guns as it is very low powered. The Aquila is a high speed load and has run in everything I've tried it in.

PS, the CB loads also work great for basement plinking into my bullet trap when the weather is ****** outside and don't make enough noise to upset the cat or my wife.............

I never shot .22 Shorts hunting when I was a kid. There were at least two no-gos for Shorts. First was they were under powered for squirrels (or supposedly under powered) and the second reason was because continued use of them would put a fouling ring in the chamber making it impossible to chamber a LR. I feel this may be a "truth" from back in the day of corrosive ammo. I don't know either of these two truths because I never shot shorts...except CBs. The reason I shot CB shorts is because I could get more rounds in the tubular magazine.

Which leads me to relate what is the best shot I ever made...a crow at 100+ yards, strictly luck and witnessed. I recovered the crow's body and the bullet's power was spent. The bullet penetrated the crow but didn't go all the way through. Dead. I couldn't repeat that shot again if I tried with a brick of ammo.

I’m a huge fan of CCI CBs (short or long—they perform the same; only the case length is different). They feed just fine through my lever rifles, and at about 700 FPS they’re dead quiet, particularly through a long barrel.

I think the last time I wore 22 shorts I was 7 years old.

Move to Florida. You'll think twice!

I shot lots of .22 Shorts in a Win 67 bolt action growing up. I picked up several .22 Short only rifles over the years but only have three left. A 1908 Winchester Model 1906, a 1924 Remington Model 24 and a 1939 Win Model 74.

I've noticed that a feral cat will almost always blink when a short hits them between the eyes.

Pet owners please spay or neuter.

And don't get me wrong, I don't hate cats, just don't want an "inside" cat. We had an "outside" cat that hunted mice, rats, and other vermin, but never bothered our "livestock". She even patiently hunted moles, would stare at the ground, cocking her head side to side listening, then suddenly digging down with a few swipes of her paws and extracting a mole from the yard. I saw her chase many feral cats off of her home turf. She was maybe 8 or 9 years old, and one day was just gone. Old age, car, coyote? Never know. But as for the rest of the local cats....as I said in another post, the biggest thing wrong with cats is there's no really good recipes.

What's the preferred ammunition for a .22 Short competition pistol?

I would like to source some ammo. Yesterday I called Champion's Choice. They don't have any at all. Nor does SGAmmo. Grrrrrr!

It likes the ammo pictured and that stuff is Polish. We got it quite a few years ago from J&G Sales. They were selling it for $5.00 a brick. I think I bought $50.00 worth back then. I have other brands on hand to use when I run out of the Polish stuff. Super-X, CCI and Remington Golden Bullets.

Also in a Remington 572 pump. It will take 22LR, 22long, and 22 shorts interchangeably if so inclined.

Lots of the older guns will take shorts, longs and long rifles. I have a Savage Model 7 semiauto. It is marked Short, long & long rifle. never shot shorts in it, but you can make it function as a quasi-bolt action, so it should shoot them just fine. Just remember to clean the chamber real well after shooting them.

I've always liked the miniscule .22. Something different and to see how accurate it was at different ranges,,25, 50 and 100m at the range.

Surprising what it can do.
Aside from the bunch of older .22's that accept S,L,LR, the only .22Short only gun I have is a Remington Model 12B Gallery Special.
'Used up beyond hope' was the message on the sale tag. Well I had to buy it just to save it. It actually is all there, but only has rifling in the last 12" on the bbl or so. With that it shoots 3" groups at 50M over a rest w/ Aguia (sp) .22shorts.
Still awaiting it's turn at a restoration.

I had a Model 62A Winchester in 22Short only. Converted to a pistol grip and restocked, and engraved, gold inlayed.
Shot it a lot before the work with the same South of the Border ammo.
That's gone now.

In JHS, a friends father bought an arm load of Remington Model 24 semiauto rifles in 22short from a local amusement park that closed their shooting gallery.
Along with it a wall of bricks of Peters 'gallery' 22short ammo.

We had a great time for many weekends a field supposedly hunting, but really just burning up that Peters ammo shooting at most any target around. Plinking at it's best

Never was able to actualy buy one of those well used Gallery Queens ,,too expensive perhaps. Probably $20 or $25 at the time. I don't really recall now.
Later on in HS I saved and bought a new Nylon 66. :-(
Then wished I had been able to get one of the used Model 24's instead.

I still buy .22short ammo when I see it at a decent price. But most of it is priced like it's Norma Big Bore Nitro Express Premium

I have not bought any .22 short in quite a while. Mostly at gun shows it is $25-$30 a brick.

I shoot a model 41-1 in my basement at a CCI bullet trap. I use CB caps and 22 shorts. Taught my son, now 40 to shoot down there with a HS Olympic that sold as soon as I found my 41-1.

When I was a kid shorts were half the price of Long Rifle. So we shot a lot of them plinking and rat shooting at the dump. They also were good ammo for squirrel. Low noise and expended their energy in the squirrel.
I have a bunch of Peters 22 Short Krumble Ball. Was made for shooting galleries. Bullets made of compressed materials that come apart when they strike Target. Just the thing for whatever aggravates you around the house.

I related a similar story earlier. Back in my kid-hood (early-mid 1950s), we didn't have any supermarkets in my part of the world. What we did have was a multitude of small neighborhood grocery/general stores, most often run by older married couples (mom & pop). In my smallish rural Ohio town, there were at least a dozen of them, maybe more, and most of them carried a very limited stock of .22 ammunition and shotgun shells. Some of them would sell shotshells individually, maybe a nickel or dime each. A slightly unusual thing was that it was nearly always Federal ammunition, although I do remember one store which carried Remington. It's a fact that Federal's early marketing program was built upon sales of .22 ammunition and shotshells through those small m&p stores, gas stations, etc. (and also making house brand ammo for the chain stores, such as Sears and Montgomery Wards). As I earlier said, the going price for .22 Shorts then was a quarter a box (LRs were 40 cents), and I shot a ton of them. I never felt particularly undergunned, as those Shorts worked fine for everything I hunted, mainly squirrels, rabbits and even ducks (sitting ducks). My favorite time was early in the year when we always had flooding, and the rising water would drive rats and snakes out of the river bottom cornfields. It wasn't much of a trick to kill all the rats you wanted until you got tired of shooting. The .22 Shorts worked great on them.

Regarding the frangible bullet .22 Short gallery cartridges, they were for a time sold commercially at gun and sporting goods stores to anyone. At least by Remington. They were sold in a small 28 round (4 rows of 7) flat pack tray with a cellophane wrapper under the name of "Remington Rocket", and also under the Peters name, but I don't remember what name Peters used. I bought several packs of them, but didn't see much point in using them when regular .22 Shorts were much cheaper. They didn't last long.

Several years ago I bought (from Brownell's, I think) a modified rotary magazine for my Ruger 77-22 for 22 shorts When fired through an AAC Scarab...talk about quiet. A head shot is required for bushy tailed tree rats.

You are talking about these? They are not frangible. On the back of the box it says "higher speed and greater power than ordinary .22 shorts"

In deference to their ages I used 22 shorts in my 1907-1916 Stevens Model 35 Offhand target pistol and my 1931 H&R 922 revolver.
They'll handle Long and Long Rifle ammo but they're not everyday shooters and I prefer to treat them gently.
Shorts are also great in my old Remington 514 for small varmints and on occasion I'll run some through my Speedmaster just for giggles.

Most are full, some are partially full and none are completely empty. I do not buy from places like Ward's Auctions (Ward's Auctions | Welcome). I get mine from folks at the range, the LGS and a few at gunshows severl years ago (they want to much now). The shadow box weighs about 15-20 pounds, has to sit on a shelf or on the floor, no hanging it up.

They are frangible - exactly the same as used in shooting galleries. The bullets are made of powdered iron in a phenolic plastic matrix. The higher speed is because the bullets are lighter, I think they are only about 15 grains. MV is around 1700 ft/sec. Try a magnet on your bullets.
