Eating Humble Pie
Shot this yesterday morning. Was feeling pretty good with myself ....until the last shot. Guess which one that was. A friend of mine said that is a reminder to be humble! Was using an original Colt Series 70 Gold Cup National Match.

Ancient Chinese craftsman were always careful to hide imperfections in their work because once they were "perfect" it was all down hill from there. This way, you can still work on improving. Likewise, I have been trying to develop a taste for beer for over 50 years. It keeps evading me, so I must keep practicing.

My thought is that you shot that last one in order to hang it on the wall!
So there!

Ah, the classic last shot flyer... It happens to everybody. You become so pleased with your shooting that you relax on the final shot thinking that you cannot possibly miss your mark because either the gun, yourself, or both are inherently accurate. So you loosen your grip a little, relax your arms a bit, let yourself breathe easy, get a little sloppy with your trigger press, or maybe even all of the above, and the shot flies wide.
As the old saying goes; "Pride comes before a fall."

Good advice, actually. It reminds me of how when I first started working, I prided myself as a model worker. I always came in early, filled in for other workers when asked, and routinely took on tasks which weren't assigned to me in the event in which my standard tasks were complete. Problem was, this resulted in my employers having such high expectations of me that on the occasion in which I was sick, had an emergency, needed to call off or leave work early, or just plain didn't have the time to do anything more than what was required of me, I received far greater disapproval than my peers under the same or even lesser circumstances.
It was from this experience I learned that it was best just to do precisely what was required of me and nothing more, because unfortunately doing more just makes your employers expect more from you and take what you do extra for granted.
Personally, I learned to accept that I just don't enjoy the taste of Beer, and be pleased with the fact that I'm healthier as a result, not to mention that I'll never have a; "Here, hold my Beer..." moment.

Every time that happens to me, it's because the target slips down on the holder during the shot. It's entirely the fault of the weak paper clips being made these days.

I feel your pain. I swear, I can't keep 10 in the black. I'm a bullseye shooter, so all 1 handed. Doesn't matter, 50 yards, 50 feet indoors, if I'm shooting at the correct target for the distance, I always manage to pull one. I can't tell you how many photos just like yours I've posted. A beautiful cluster and a space station (that's no moon!) And you're right, its usually #10. Pressure I guess. Like being straight on station 8 at skeet, or bottom of 9th, bases loaded, 2 strikes and a 3-2 count. Pitcher or batter, both facing the same thing!

The line to use is " I was doing great until some doofus put one on my target".
You can mention later that it was you or just leave it.

Don't you just hate that when it happens.................
You have a good thing going and you don't concentrate or get cocky and................
there goes the ball game.
I was a little ticked off when it happened to me shooting metalic targets but...
I was Irate when I was 24 for 24 at a trap shoot and missed the last bird !!!
Just got to smile and grab more ammo.

I believe the technical term for multiple flyers on the same target, as opposed to one ragged hole, is a ........ Swiss Miss.
I once asked William how the holes got there, but he wouldn't Tell.

I am reminded of two sayings from my muzzleloading competition days:
Only 2 things keep me from being a good shot, eights and nines
and
A 50 no X beats a 49 four X.
Nice target from the OP anyhow, I agree with the bad primer theory.

I learned that when I went to a USMC course of fire that was designed with Jeff Cooper's help. We called it a "Failure To Stop" drill.

NO excuse however i'm more inclined to believe this is from forgetting what your hold is. Happens to me a lot. 9 shots center hold one shot 1800 hold, or in your case 9 shots 1800 hold and one shot center of target hold. Could happen to anyone.

Many years ago I was shooting a club IPSC match. I was on a roll and had cleared the course without a miss. All I had to do was drop the "stop" plate and I'd have my first win. HA. Of course, I missed the stop plate. At this stage of the match we were shooting with our weak hand, and it was assumed your strong hand was disabled. I remember thinking just as clearly, "I'll take the five point penalty for a reload with my disabled hand, I'll get five points for the stop plate. A draw." OH NO! I missed the the stop plate seven more times before finally dropping it with the last shot just as time expired.

I finally learned how to avoid that last shot flier. I sighted my target revolvers to hit below my point of aim. In PPC, I sighted in by holding the #10 at Seven and impacting in the X ring. 25 yards my point of aim was at the 8 with impact in the X. 50 was a neck hold. If I could not see the group, I would not get complacent and throw the shot.
Not that misses did not happen! I was in a combat match at blew one at 7 yards. Three targets, side by each, on edge. At the go, targets turn and you had 10 seconds (?) to put two on each torso. And you were paired with another competitor. Winner advanced to the next round. I got to the last round and ran the course. Imagine my surprise when they scored a 5/6! My third shot, first on the middle target was clearly over the shoulder way out and visible to God and anyone else who wanted to look at it. Rather annoying especially considering 12x’s in 25 seconds was an easy stage for me. Oh well, it did teach me to not take things for granted. I can still remember how that felt.

Here is one to which you can both relate. I shot this in a law enforcement competition when I was in Calif. There are 60 shots on the target, 59 are in the 5 ring and one is in the 3 ring, so it is a 298 instead of a 300 target. There is a lot more of the back story than that though.
