What a good looking revolver! Except for the cut back trigger guard I like the concept of Fitz Special. Do you plan on getting the Colt letter?

I like every mod except the cut trigger guard. I prefer the way that Bill Jordan did it, just thinning the side of the trigger guard (right side for right handed shooter or the opposite for a lefty).

If I have to bonk some guy over the melon, trigger guard will surely tie up the trigger. Is it really that much faster; to alter the original design that way? Joe

I am reading the Paladin Press reprint of Fitzgerald's book, Shooting now.
It's well-written and he was obviously a very well-practiced and talented shooter.
I do not understand the cut trigger guard however. Always looked like an accident waiting to happen to me.

I like that a lot, whitecoyote. Looks like very nice work. Front ramp sight is impressive, as is checkering on the backstrap.
The original theory with removing half the trigger guard was that it made trigger acquisition faster. I don't think I'd want to carry a revo like that, but a lot of fellows did -- and some still do -- with success.
Nice piece!

Still a darn nice gun! I like old carry revolvers and sincerely hope that you get bored with it soon and place it in the Classifieds.

Neat old gun. I too, don't care for the cut away trigger guard but it seemed to work well for Fitz but I do believe that he always used a holster that covered the trigger guard completely and he used it carefully.
And, another one that I wish I could talk to and listen to as well. You'd need to be able to ask questions because like most "Shooters" be they men or guns; most of the real ones don't do a lot of talking about the 'reality' part of their lives without a good listener!

Charley Askins was fond of the cutaway trigger guard. His .38 Special Colt New Service-in the Gene Autry Museum-has had the front of its trigger guard cut away, in "The Pistol Shooter's Book" he advocates using the heel of the hand to "lay down a barrage" as he puts it.

Man, I really like that gun. That trigger guard wouldn't bother me a bit.
I think BlackhawkNJ is right - you could turn the gun on its side and smack the trigger with the edge of your off hand to burn out six rounds in no time flat.

On the other hand Ed McGivern disapproved of the cutaway trigger guard-so did Bill Jordan.

Didn't Skeeter Skelton write about cutting down a pair of Army Specials like that? If memory serves, he cut the barrels down to the extractor rod length, had new sights made out of key stock, and cut off the front of the trigger guards. I believe he also stated that he de-horned the hammers. I think he wrote that he sold them or swapped them in order to get his first car with A/C.

Great going!! I mentioned that gun on this forum, if it's the same one I saw on Gun Broker. Everything about that gun is great. I didn't get involved because dealers here in Cailifornia charge so much to get even a C&R into the state. Last price was $299 I think.

Thanks straight 20
You gotta admit, it is a fascinating Colt.
As for charging more, I believe it was a good deal for both.
Thanks again!

I think I read that also, but cuttin' the trigger guards open or completely off as with some 1911s as well as pinning the grip safeties down was common years ago. I carried 1911s that way up to the mid 70s and beyond ...the theory was ya didn't want to mistake the front of the guard for the trigger when things got wild & wooly and down & dirty...

Dave

I think Skeeter said he carried them in a double Berns-Martin upside down shoulder holster set up. These might be guns he wanted to use in the Army(?) but his commanding officer wouldn't let him.

I think Sheriff Skelton told that he built these two revolvers after takin' a little beatin' from an unruly crowd that had kicked his 357 S&W under the patrol car...or some such...

Dave. Skeeter "Fitzized" a 38-44 HD and carried it in a B-M upside down shoulder holster. I can't remember what situation for sure about his chopped guns until I dig up "Skeeter Skelton On Handguns" somewhere out in the garage.

Skeeter was a Marine and his LT found his S&W .38 special and told him to get rid of it.

Looks great. I like it.
The ramped sight is different than most I've seen. Usually have a half moon style sight.

Re: Skeeter
The HD had the barrel cut and the hammer bobbed, no mention of Fitzing the trigger. Carried in a shoulder holster (make not specified) after a noggin-thumping by a group of drunks who had taken his Model 27. (Work Guns I Remember Well from Skeeter Skelton on Handguns)
The pair of Army Specials got the full Fitz treatment as well as ramp sights and a "modified bird's head" butt. They were carried in Berns-Martin Lightning shoulder holsters and then traded for the auto A/C. (My Little Guns from Skeeter Skelton's Handgun Tales)
Re: High Standard Double Derringer
I carried one of these in a pocket holster in my hip pocket for about 10 years. It had no front loop on the trigger guard. It also had a trigger pull that made intentional discharge a chore, never mind unintentional.
Re: Bashing miscreants over the head with your revolver (Fitz'd or not)
That's what saps are for.

Captain , that's how he Related the story in one of his articles; if anyone would like to read some of Mr. Skelton’s writings try the Dark Canyon web page.

This is something to keep in mind.
As these pics show. Both are Model 10-8s, both LE trade ins from 20 years ago.
The revolver in the second pic had an interesting life.

Congrats on picking up a very cool old gun! I don't think that I could bring myself to cut up an old one now, but I would love to find one that have been customized like that in the past.
I went home and looked in my copy of 'A history of the Colt Revolver' by Haven and Belden, and I am pretty sure based on that and some other lesser reference materials that the checkered trigger and backstrap are factory original. That was apparently done to a several models of Colt DA revolvers pre1940.
