Big Bore Sixguns
by John Taffin.
First edition, 1997, printed in the USA.
Good book. Lots of classic sixshooters and cast bullet loads. Taffin's writing is informative, friendly, and full of lots of good ol' Americana.
My wife gave me this as a Christmas present shortly after we got married. We were so broke back then! We'd both finished grad school and were each driving to different teaching gigs every day, making a piecemeal income.
My wife saw me repeatedly looking at this book when we'd peruse our favorite bookstore, after dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant.
How times have changed!
-Bookstores are kaput.
-Taffin's follow up book, Single Action Sixguns, was printed in China. (Now, you're lucky if you can even find a nice hardcover book on firearms.)
-$20 no longer gets you a dinner for two (with tip) and change back.

A couple of good reads for S&W fans:
Update: I just discovered that the author's son (Dean) has made this book available to read online or download as a PDF for free, in memory of his Father's passing in Jan 2019 at the age of 93:

The Jerry Miculek of his time... Ed McGivern
This book is a Wolfe Publishing reprint of a book by Rocky Gibbs.
Who was Rocky Gibbs? He was a wildcat rifle cartridge creator (like P.O. Ackley) and a championship long range rifle shooter (some of his records still stand today) from the late 50's/early60's
He created the .30 Gibbs, which is an improved 30-06. His conversions of surplus P-17 .30-06 Enfield's to .30 Gibbs was quite popular in the early 60's.
My Step-Dad passed his Rocky Gibbs converted P-17 onto me.

Die Scheibenpistole
One of my favorite gun books:
"Die Scheibenpistole"
by Bruno Brukner and Otto Halfmann
If you like target pistols, specifically single shot .22 "free" pistols of the type used for International 50 meter competition, and historical predecessors, this book is for you. It covers all details such as action types, cartridges, set triggers, and sights. Manufacturers/makers covered from the 18th to 21st century. It is organized by nation of origin, from "A to Z" (almost.... Austria to USA!)
Loaded with technical specs, diagrams, and historical information.
One caveat: It's all in German!
Interestingly, the information on American single shot target pistols is more complete and detailed than almost anything I've seen published in English, (barring certain specifics like the Green/ElectroArms electric trigger free pistol). For example: Great info on the Walter Roper designed USRA made by Harrington & Richardson.
(Oops, I guess my cover photo entry is becoming a book review! Sorry!)

Sir, the only date I can find anywhere on the magazine is a copyright date on the back of the first page is 1976.
That time frame fits with when I first started buying guns, so is suppose that is likely when I bought it.

A few more "Cowboy" gun mags...
Winter 2020 Issue:
The 28,000+ round Henry Golden Boy "torture test" in this issue was a very interesting read!
It gave me the confidence to buy one, as I had some reservations about the durability of the actual ZAMAK 5 zinc alloy receiver, that lurks beneath that cosmetic "brasslite" receiver cover on the Golden Boy.
Spring 2017 Issue:

Some vintage covers with what I consider iconic S&W's.
And this one simply because it made me laugh. The combination of a lousy camera angle and the shooter's expression
makes it look like he got bonked on the head by the ejected casing .

Alte Scheibenwaffen
Alte Scheibenwaffen Vol. 1
This is a four volume series, title translating to " Old Target Arms".
It is mostly in English.
Each volume is 300-400 pages, in a large, landscape hardcover book with sewn binding.
The scope is immense, covering lots of in depth historical & cultural info, details about arms and their components (triggers, sights, barrels, engraving, chamberings, etc), ammunition, and accessories.
Volume 1 covers the essential background and is a great introduction. Many Americans are oblivious to Schuetzen style target shooting. Of those that are familiar, there is a prevailing misconception that it is an arcane, obsolete specialized field appealing only to the eccentric.
Besides, how many sports, specifically shooting sports, are featured in an opera?
I'm speaking of "Der Freischütz" by Carl Maria von Weber.
Look at the pictures! The ranges were elaborate set-ups that could accomodate thousands of participants and spectators. Major matches were National events spread out over a week or more!
I've tried to include a sampling of images to capture the extent of the content.
I think these books sell in the $75-90 range. They are worth twice that easily!

more for Alte Scheibenwaffen
A few more images.
Some are related to the "Alte Scheibenwaffen" book, others underscore the once widespread appeal of Schuetzen, by way of the previously mentioned "Der Freischütz" opera.
Note the "Paper Theater" cut-out figures from the 19th century.
The album cover depicts a character holding an 18th century style jaeger rifle.
Detailed photo of a jaeger rifle.
Period photo of range shooting.
Here's a link to a performance of the "Huntsman's Chorus" from Der Freischütz. (good English subtitles)
Der Freischütz: Hunters' chorus [German and English subtitles] - YouTube
Sorry to have strayed so far from a book cover. But, if you're into shooting enough to read related books, you can't help but expand your knowledge base!
One more bit of history/trivia: The Huntsman's Chorus video makes reference to "Diana". This is the Roman goddess of hunting. At the time the opera was written, there was a strong interest in Greek and Roman history and mythology. RWS used the name Diana for their (once very nice German-made) airguns.
Hopefully, you'll all enjoy a bit of the related information.

I have one of his PPC revolvers. Bought it from am old gentleman who had tried to sell it at the LGS. They did not want it as it was "rough". Ended up following him out of the shop and made a deal for the revolver, Pachmayr Pistol Case and 1000 rounds of reloads for $250 (this was several years ago). These pictures of the revolver were taken then.

I'm a big fan of his work, particularly the full size guns he chopped down into compact carry guns. I also had a Colt pin gun of his that I sold with the others but I picked up another one last year as well as a Colt Gov't that came out of his shop, though I don't think he did the work on it.

Swiss Handguns by Häusler
SWISS HANDGUNS
1975
by Fritz Häusler
Tri-lingual book covering military and civilian handguns made in Switzerland since 1817.
An excellent reference book, giving a great overall survey of handgun design and manufacture, emphasizing the precision and engineering.
There are dedicated chapters for the ordinance revolvers, the Swiss Lugers, the "SIG pistol" (aka: P210, SP47/8, etc.), later service arms, and civilian target pistols (Hämmerli).
I took a few pictures of the contents.
Check out the last one! Common practice of military armorers was to do their own independent accuracy test when receiving a new batch of 10 service P210 handguns. Each would be set in a machine rest one by one, and fired with one 8 round magazine. No effort was made to allow for "sighter" shots. The result was an 80 shot composite group for the 10 gun lot!
Can anybody name another service pistol that could meet this accuracy standard?

A couple more magazines for today.
I found the 1967 Guns Mag in a pile of magazines at my local Pistol Club.

Just to give credit where it is due, Herrett's holsters were made by
Chet Hillman, who did business as Chet's Holsters, also in Twin Falls, Idaho.
I always thought Chet's Trimline belt with recessed billet was a
snazzy idea. If you ever tried to push the belt with regular billet
through a tight belt loop you know what I mean.

Today we have some interesting vintage catalogs, and a US Army Vietnam era M-16 field manual.
As I understand it, the M-16 had become a jam-o-matic due to a lack of routine maintenance.
The close tolerances of the M-16 wasn't playing well with the field conditions of Vietnam.
The Army wasn't having good success in getting the maintenance message to stick, so they came out with this comic book format field manual
with the idea that since the age of the majority of soldiers were just out of "boyhood", the comic book would connect with them better than a conventional format FM.
Any Vietnam Vets here that received or remembers it?
Vintage Bishop Gunstock Catalog - 1960
Ever heard of Pacific Reloading tools? Well, this is them before they were sold to Henkle & Joyce Hardware of Lincoln, NE
in the 50's and specialized in just reloading tools.
The address dates this booklet between the 30's/40's, as they moved multiple times.

Holy smokes! I grew up reading that. It taught me how to field strip a .45 while I was still in grade school.
