Default I Got One-a Those; Why Buy Another?

A short whine:

I've been "accumulating" for a bunch of years. And I have some nice guns: old and new; pistol, revolver, and rifle. Probably too many.

And when I see something good, or a bargain, or new, I say, "I'd like that."

But the darned adult in me says, "No, wait, you got something like that, why get another?"

Like an M&P when I have a Sig 320 (in 9 & .40); or 6906 at a great price and I have one (and a CS9 and a 3914LS and a lot of other S&W pistols); or a 1911 in 9mm when there's a 1911 in .45, a Sig P210, and a Sig 250 (in 9 .22 and .40) in the safe. 'Bout the only things I'm still looking for are a SW99 in .45 and a P250 in .380, and thems be scarce.

I've got no right to whine, I've got new guns, old guns, and enough ammo. What I really should complain about is never finding enough range time.

Whine is over. Thanks for putting up with it.

Ever heard the phrase "two is one, and one is none"?

Buy right and top shelf guns are about as good as a Savings Account, only pay more interest.

The default position is to buy unless there's a compelling reason not to.

So, the real question is "Why not?"

My Grandma Taylor always said about beer: "One's enough, two are too many, and three aren't enough." I suppose that must go for guns, too.

If I could go back in time, and tell young squidsix, I would say many things.
Among them: “find something that feels good in your hand, is reliable and accurate. Then buy two of those and be done with it”

Or very good samples of Rugar Model 77's sold at a drop dead price like $100.00. Yeah, it's in a hard to find and high priced cartridge but hey at that price I can have the barrel cut back a couple of threads and rechambered to .22-250 for a couple of Franklins and then it's a bargain.

It's a pleasant problem, like having too many starting pitchers who can go 6 innings or more. I bought my 627 PC snub from the range's pro shop... because it was there and nobody else would understand it. BTW, this is a valid reason. What was I to do 18 months later when a member placed several handguns for consignment, and among them was... you guessed it, a slightly used 627 PC snub?

I regret the day I decided I needed anything beyond my 17-2 and 14-2. I was totally happy with those two alone.

I don't know if he coined the phrase or not, but gunwriter Kent Bellah used "pair and a spare" in the '50s and '60s when he found a handgun he really liked. You don't hear it much anymore.

I can see collecting variations in the same model. I can see buying another of the model one has because the price is too good to pass up, and then selling or giving one of the pair away. But I guess I can't see buying more than one of a particular model and variation to keep.

But, if someone else wants to do that, have at it. All of us have our own preferences and have no obligation to please anyone other than ourselves in our accumulating/collecting.

Savings account interest? Uh, that's been a loser since your grandma collected green stamps. Actually that would be my mom because she died in 2013 at the ripe old age of 92. Balanced mutual funds are paying 8% if you know which ones. My cash account (savings) is paying less than 1%.

I need to spend that down to keep my heirs from living the good life.

People don't save anymore. They invest.

I heard the phrase used in cowboyaction shooting where it was said you needed 3 Winchester 97s .one to shoot ,a spare to shoot WHEN that one breaks and one at the gunsmith getting fixed lol

I know what you mean, about relentless firearm "accumulation" esp with near duplicates of our favorite ones. For several decades, now past, I did a lot of "impulse" buying, partly because I could afford it, and found lots of forearms I wanted. Looking back, I am glad I did so, acquiring some long desired firearms at great prices, WWII, and other weapons.

But those days are over. I reload for 14 different calibers, just came in from making 500 9mm's. But when I pick up a rifle, in some new to me caliber, I just say to myself, "...but I already have one that does that..., and I don't even hunt." Besides, if I buy another caliber, that means about half the cost of the rifle in scopes, and dies. It adds up. I can't shoot past about 100 yards, so I don't need a thousand yard rifle.

The only revolver I have is a pristine 27-2 I picked up a year ago off the used rack at Cabela's . I have given many of my firearms to my son.

The only "vintage" military rifle I don't have is a M1A, like the M14 I carried long ago in the army.

But I still often look up Ruger 44 mag carbines, a rifle I have wanted for decades. But then I remind myself that I have a perfect '44 Inland M1 Carbine I reload and shoot, so why do I need the Ruger, when I don't hunt.

I don't have any "duplicate" firearms. When I was young and single, I don't have any "duplicate" girlfriends either. One was expensive enough.

All the best, guys. Stay safe... SF VET

I'm a dedicated accumulator. If I find a good deal at a pawn shop I don't care how many of them I have. I consider them my 401K. I guess that's how I ended up with a pair of 4" 686's, five 4" 66's, five 4" 19's, half a dozen G22's, over 2 dozen .30-30's and many more duplicates.
