Couldn't get into the Ruger forum so I'll post it here.

I did a poor mans trigger job on our GP-100 and SP-101 replacing the Main spring and Trigger latch spring with Wolffs. Did the GP-100 first, and she slid back together easy as pie. Took literally 5 minutes. Function check, 100%. Repeat the proceedure on the 101, and function check fails!

The trigger will start to pull and the hammer starts back and we are locked up tight. Remove trigger assembly, inspect and reassemble. Same thing. Now the tolerances on the SP-101 are a bit tighter than on the GP100, but the assemblies are identical, and there is only one way I can see it going back in.

For the life of me I cannot figure out whats going on. Anyone got any ideas?

Well, I read about it here and it sounded like a good idea...

Really, this is a simple spring replacement. And the trigger on the GP 100 is beautiful!

All ideas all start off sounding good.....I bet that trigger on the SP was not too shabby either before you went to work on it

Seriously though-the Ruger is pretty idiot proof, I'm sure you'll be able to get it right (tell me-are you going to take apart your Ruger 22 pistol-now THAT is fun tryin' to get back together-ask me, I'll tell ya )

No need. We have one of those chinese puzzles too. I dont disassemble it often because of that. Then, when I do, its been so long since I did it that I've forgotten the "trick". Two hours and a lot of cussin' later, I hit hit upon it and think, "Dang, that was easy".

Could you swap pieces between them until you find which one causes the problem?
If they are the same size be sure to mark all the pieces from one gun so can get the right pieces back.
I did the same thing to a 101 and it worked great - about a 3lb smooth pull.

Did you get the hammer strut back in the right way? Thats the piece inside the grip that the main spring fits on. If it is flipped over it might cause that problem.

I can email you a 2 page step by step procedure for disassembly, smoothing and reassembly.

As said by Jeff423 maybe the hammer pivot. Also, is the transfer bar properly placed?

+1 on those pesky Ruger .22's - the only gun I almost quit on and brought to a gunsmith in pieces (suddenly, it magically went together). I will NEVER forget the proper procedure, as I still don't know it, but will shoot it until it is too dirty to function, then trade!

Man, the Ruger automatic pistol is nothing compared to the 10/22 trigger group!! You gotta use all these slave pins and things. The pyramids of Egypt were easier to put together. And then you have to put at least one spring with a bad attitude in backwards. I think it's name is Spartacus.

Seriously though, go back and check the manual reassembly steps and follow exactly what they say. It sounds like the Hammer Dog is in the wrong relation to the trigger. You want to check it at each step along the way (rotate the cylinder with the trigger at Step 2 for function, etc.) as the manual indicates to make sure everything is in proper relation with the pawl and transfer bar. Pulling the trigger and letting the hammer forward then releasing it is important in Step 3, as is the Step 5 manipulation.

Then again, putting the hammer strut in upside down will almost certainly cause a problem (I've tried that a few times ).

Fixed it! I had disassembled the trigger assemebly (cuz while its out, I gotta know how the thing works, doncha know?) and I inadvertantly put the trigger plunger in upside-down. Duh!

SP101 trigger is smoooooooth!
