Cool A 10mm magnum Match champ. **RANGE UPDATE**

Well not yet.... ill punch it out this weekend

Let's try this again.

First time I did it it was in a 3inch (silly yes) so this one popped up and I changed the tune a bit, figured the extra inch may help lol.

Kinda awesome as I bought the gun with a "used" title but arrived new. She hasent seen a round yet I count it as a little win...

Well why not go 41mag some say? I never really looked into 41 mag and the options available for it, plus I'm set to load .40 and 10mm.

Anyway figured ide share and drum up some 10mag conversations...

Erik

I'm confused, did you have that Ruger GP100 modified to chamber the 10mm Magnum cartridge or is it merely a standard model chambered in 10mm Auto are you merely referring to it as a Magnum?

No disrespect towards 10mm Auto, as it definitely falls within the range of what a Magnum cartridge would offer, but there actually is a "10mm Magnum" cartridge as well, but I don't blame you if you didn't know that because it is an obscure cartridge which is seldom discussed.

10MM Auto and 10MM Magnum are different cartridges

Many of us with revolvers or T/C Contenders originally chambered for the 10MM Auto cartridge have lengthened the chambers to accept the 10MM Magnum cartridge.

Depending on projectile, the velocity gain is 200 - 400 FPS

I have done 4 revolvers and a T/C so far

That went a wee faster than the last time, I wasn't as nervous this time around I guess...

Took chambers to 1.155...

I will probably shoot her tomorrow as I only have 4 10mags leftover from the last time, so time to make more...

Yes I punched the other 2 chambers lol...

In looking at picture #2 in post #8 it appears as though a couple of the cases in the moonclip are sitting high, i.e., the rim of the brass is not touching the moonclip as there's a gap between them, possibly due to your ream to depth??

For my "ream to depth" I decided on 1.163".

As my factory S&W 610's 10mm Auto chambers measured .900" from the chamber ledge to the face of the cylinder, and the 10MAG's max case length is .263" longer than the 10Auto (.992" -vs- 1.255"), so 1.163" sounded right.

If you want to be able to shoot the 10MAGs without moonclips casually (which I like to do), this "ream to depth" is important.

If you're always going to use moonclips any length longer will work.

A shorter length means you'll have less shell head clearance.

10MAG case length ranges from 1.245" to 1.255", affecting shell head clearance w/o moonclips.

A mid-length (1.250") 10MAG case should extend .087" above the cylinder face & give ~.017" shell head clearance.

Dave Manson said he could make some Go-No Go gages using his specs (Go=1.250" & No Go= 1.262") but they are pricey & he said it'd be several weeks before he could complete them.

I made my own using 41 Magnum brass sized to 10mm dia. & trimmed down in length. (You need a longer than normal 10MAG case to make these gages so the 41MAG's longer .035" length filled the bill.)

I ended going with 1.257" & 1.271" lengths.

I've got over 1000 handloads thru my converted 4" bbl. 610-3 & enjoy the heck out of shooting it.

Hopefully you'll enjoy your 10MAG too.

Was wondering with top end loads what one can expect to get out of a 3-4" 10mm Magnum vs. a standard full load 10mm.

Also is there much bullet pull when using top end loads. I guess since these headpace on the clip instead of the case mouth one can clip just like a standard rimmed revolver round. And as to clips, can one still use the easy to load factory clips or have to go to the Ranch or TK ThickClips? My 10mm MC will not run .40 S&W with the OEM clips as the headspace is too loose but runs 100% with the ThickClips.

Have had a 10mm MC since the second week they were announced and find with full loads all I want recoil wise in a mid-frame size gun like the MC. I also would not want to loose the ability to use the easy to load OEM clips or loose 10mm rounds when I want to.

This would have been the ideal LE revolver back in the day, exactly what Keith/Jordan/Skelton wanted when they ended up with the .41 Magnum.

I appreciate the info Bluedot... I check the ruger again and I also would like to run 10 mag with out moon clips, if I go any deeper I'll need the thick clips to run the gun properly....

Quoting Bluedot:
“I made my own using 41 Magnum brass sized to 10mm dia. & trimmed down in length. (You need a longer than normal 10MAG case to make these gages so the 41MAG's longer .035" length filled the bill.)”

Would it be possible to make 10mm AR and 10mm mag AR brass this way?

I've never noticed having an issue with jump crimp shooting either 10AUTO or 10MAG in my 4" M610 with full loads.

It weights 42oz unloaded. Don't know what the Ruger weighs.

I shoot mine largely without moonclips but I don't see where using them would make a difference in that regard.

Default 10AR brass

Quote:

I'll give that a qualified Yes.

As mentioned I did use them as 10MAG check gages but prior to that, just for the heck of it, I trimmed & resized a handfull of 41 Mag cases to 10mm Auto length & shot the 10AR cases with full loads in my M610 (when it was still a 10AUTO).

They still have to headspace on the case mouth & chamber shoulder/ledge, not the rim because it's not thick enough like a true AutoRim case would have/need.

If you cut the case length shorter, so the rim is against the cylinder face, you'll have too much shell head clearance & have FTF/misfires.

You still need to use a taper crimp on the seated bullet, of course.

The extractor easily grabs the rim for ejection but because the 10AR is the same length as a 10AUTO, but minus the double thick rim, part of the case is exposed between the rim & cylinder face. Call it unsupported.

I worked up to my normal max 10AUTO load (165gr JHP with Power Pistol @ 10.0grs) & I had no issues with the brass in the 10AR case.

It's really a small amount exposed but other than just having a few around to say I have them I'm not planning on cutting up my 41MAG brass to do more.

I've asked Starline several times if they'd consider making actual 10AR brass & they've away declined.

Maybe if more interested people ask them they might change their mind?

Dang you guys got me wondering. Can you resize the 41 mag brass to 10mm, and use it in the 10mm pistol without the moon clips and it eject?

I laid my hands on one of those Match Champions a few years back and they also had a Blackhawk in 10mm. Seriously considered grabbing one, but for some reason I didn't pull the trigger. I bet the prices have gone up now.

Talking

First round of testing is in...

I went off Tafitins writings and started at 18gr of 2400, with a 12 shot average 1380fps in 80* weather out of the 4 inch GP100 match champ runing xtream 200gr FPs

Surprisingly accurate, shooting way high(sights need to be adjusted) but all within a 3in group at 15yds
My opinion is frigging WOW, what a cannon! I think some magnaporting may be in order....

Anyway that's all I have for now, next up will be H110 loadings

Edit add, I neglected to mention that the cases fell out of the cylinder so I think that's a great sign.

Anyway that's all I have for now, next up will be H110 loadings
You should try longshot. It does really well with heavy 10mm.

Edit add, I neglected to mention that the cases fell out of the cylinder so I think that's a great sign.

How'd this compare with your 10mm Mag results with your 3" GP100?

Hickok45 has said that, for him, a 4" 629/29 is a 44 special with 44 mag capability, and a 3" is really 44 special only. In your experience, did you conclude similarly that the 3" should be 10mm Auto only whereas you can handle shooting some (though maybe not all day) 10mm Mag in the 4" Match Champion?

I wonder if Ruger made the 10mm GP100 in a 6" barrel. I know they had the blued, half-lug 5" for a while.

I have never been able to get through more than 10 Minutes of a Hickok reaction video.

The man is a good shooter, but the two or three reactions that I watched he was getting many of the facts wrong and he never gets to the point. In one reaction to a Smith & Wesson revolver, he did not even know what revolver he had. You would think that he would ask the Factory the name of what he was talking about.

I met him and his son in person at a couple of events that the NSSF put on. The two of them are Big folks, I am 6'4" and they are both noticeably taller. My problem with meeting him is that he talks the same way as on camera

The 29/329/629 family of revolvers are 44 Magnums.

All of my 310/610 revolvers have had their cylinders lengthened for 10MM Magnum, it does not matter what the barrel length is.

This revolver is a 10MM Magnum I would never dream of restricting it to just 10MM Auto or 40 S&W.

When, if ever, do you shoot 10mm or 40 in your Night Guard? If for a reason other than cost and convenience of ammo availability, why not shoot 10mm Magnum alone?

Can't say I've shot a .44 in a snub, this certainly bucks harder than my 6.5in power port .44mag. An certainly more snippy than my brothers super Alaska 2.5 .454casull

IMO the 10 mag belongs in something a bit longer, the 5inch gun would like yield better results of course. The 4inch runs about 100fps faster FPS than the 3 inch...

This is the perfect bear/hiking revolver(i would still take my .44 or my 1026 over this)tho follow up shots would be difficult, this thing really cracks.

IN MY OPINION my 3inch GP100 will remain 10mm Auto, the decision is up to you... I only fired 6 out of the one I had previously, I got hard up for some dollars so it made the list to sell.

Don't think I would fire more than 50 rounds threw this thing at the range, it's a cannon.

It’s gotta be brutal. Six cylinders full is all I could take from my SRH 6” in 10mm Mag. I think it’s snappier than my 657 snub!

Personally, I would never. I do not even have a piece of 40 brass in the house.

Obviously I have lots of 10MM Auto on hand for the semi auto pistols and the SMG

That comment was aimed toward the statement about Hickok restricting his 3" 29/629 to 44 Special only

So no magnum cartridge should be offered in a 4" bbl or shorter?

That's such a silly thing for him to say. I quit watching him years ago.

The 10AUTO only needs a L-frame sized revolver to be handled comfortably, but S&W hasn't seen fit to do that yet.

The 10MAG is far better suited in a N-frame size like the 610 which comes in 4" or 6".

Several times at the indoor range, with my 610 10MAG, I had people come & ask me if I was shooting a 44MAG.

.

I quit shooting 10AUTO in my 610 once I converted it to 10MAG.

Guess I need to shoot some 10AUTOs in a chrono test against some 10MAGs using the 610, just to put some numbers on it.

.

Nah, that ain't what he said.

Assuming that your question wasn't rhetorical, and presuming that I could answer on his behalf, I would speculate that his response would be something to the effect of "No, that's not at all what I am saying. To reiterate, for me, snub-nosed 44s only see 44 special, though, for some folks, for some applications, there are occasions where snub-nosed 44 mags have utility."

Generally agree, 10mm mag loads (especially the hot ones that OP is loading that surpass a lot of factory 44 mag offerings) are extremely snappy in a 4" GP100 or L frame. Even the full underlug 4" 686 converted to 10mm/10mm mag is sub-40 oz. Though, I would argue that a 10mm mag 6" L Frame would tame the recoil just enough to allow the round to shine in an L Frame.

Love my 610 in 10mm mag, but if 10mm mag is going to have a real advantage, it's the ability to chamber in an L frame with performance exceeding 357 but south of 44 magnum.

21GR of H110 didn't do how I thought it would.

1281 FPS 12 shot average pushing 200 grn pills, no crazy fire ball and about a 10 inch group on steel...

Looks like 2400 is my winner so far...

Next up Blue dot.

Not to hijack, but I have an Automag in 10mm mag. I can't find ammo anywhere. Where did you get your brass?

Download the Ammoseek app and keep checking it for 10 mag. Starline does runs of it from time to time, but you have to act fast when it’s available.

Starline is probably the only current source for them.

I placed a backorder for some 10MAG from Starline back in Apr-2021.

In May-2022 I sent them an email asking when they thought they'll be producing them.

The reply said they didn't know when since it was not a popular cartridge & "will probably be a while before they are made".

The website's status for 10MAG says Backordered which I can only guess infers they're waiting until they have enough orders to start a run.

I'd get in line & place a backorder with them if you really want some.

PS: They were listed as $144/500 but now show as $158/500.

Shot my friends 357 Match Champion when they first came out. It was one of, if not the, most accurate revolvers I’ve ever shot, putting every bullet through the same hole with little effort.

The 10mm mag intrigues me. That Ruger is the perfect choice for such a conversion.
