You have fun playing their games.
I bought a TISAS copy that works perfect for $330.00 in hand.

Definitely hoops if you don't readily have some things available.
BUT for those who do, the hoops are really low to the ground and easy enough you don't have to jump, you just walk through.
1. First, print out the PDF CMP forms readily available online.
2. Proof of citizenship - make a copy of your passport
3. Membership in CMP affiliate - sign up for a Garand Collectors Association membership on line for $25. Print out receipt.
4. Proof of marksmanship activity - Copy of concealed carry permit.
5. Individual State Law Requirements IF REQUIRED - make a copy of FOID IF your state requires or permit to purchase.
6. Fill out some forms, have them notarized and sign.
7. Send the completed forms and enclosures.
Bam, hoops done. Maybe takes 15 to 20 minutes if you're like me; less if you're not. Wait until they call (admittedly, this could be a long wait). Pay by credit card over the phone. 1 or 2 days later, go pick up your pistol at your FFL.
There are other ways that meet the CMP requirements (birth certificate for proof of citizenship,
retired veterans ID as a substitute for CMP affiliate, member in ANY CMP affiliate, proof of veteran status for proof of marksmanship etc.) but if you have the items I listed, it takes all of 15 minutes to make copies, complete the forms, sign in front of a notary, stuff it in an envelope and mail it on your way home.
Buying a CMP 1911, I bought some nostalgia, if not history (issued and carried an M1911A1 in the early 90's). This was the most economical way of getting one without stumbling across a bona fide take home for $600 at an estate being sold because they want to be rid of it).
Is it worth the price and the extra paperwork? For me, yes.
I'll buy a Tisas in a heartbeat as opposed to a Dan Wesson or Ed Brown and be happy. Pull trigger, hit target, be happy. Any of those will do if it goes bang every time, one just is a better value if it does. And for that, a Tisas is a better value than a CMP 1911 for sure.
