Default Mother-in-law

Mother-in-law... No, not the startling Chicago combination of hot dog bun, chili, and tamale (urk!)... the Mother-in-law you get when you marry.

I read about you guys finding rare guns, inheriting guns, and so forth. "Never happens to me!" I said. But this week my brother-in-law, in the throes of downsizing, stopped by and said hey, you want an old gun?

Now, I would say my mother-in-law was a pistol. She was a memorable person and I was lucky in my in-laws. But apparently she was actually the Savage 1914 type. BIL says she always called this the gun that "Uncle Steve made for her". My guess is he was the stock refinisher on this piece.

Excuse my poor pics, and enjoy the old one of Uncle Steve and MIL with her Savage, and both feet on the ground. (but only one in a shoe!)

Third pic looks like a painful substitute to tying ones tubes.

Years ago, perhaps 55, I traded a 5 gallon milk can to my cousin for one of those Savage 22's. I took it apart for some reason and the parts have to be around here somewhere. My only octagon barrel gun.

Returning to where I come from, it's sometimes comically unique to be the well-armed mother-in-law.

I would have traded my M-I-L for an old gun....or a tray of pizza.

Now all you need is one of those old time two sleeve leather and canvas carrying cases to transport it around.

<cough> Some of us might remember the Herman's Hermits cover version...

The Savage came with a Marlin 89C, an old American Gun Co side-by-side hammer 12ga, a leather cartridge box half full of 22LRs and a game call, and yes one of those old-time gun cases (holding the Marlin, which is like new).

Glad you did good on both counts. Only thing better than a good old gun, is good old family. I predict you will see her again when you cross over, and she may say something like where's my rifle?
