I have heard mixed results but I am sure there will be more to come along to confirm or deny? How's that?

I just got some of the new gray packaged Winchester Xpert HV. I never liked the old Xpert, it was inconsistent (bang, bang, pop, woof, bang..), leaded bad in some of my guns, and didn't feed well in autos.

I tried the new stuff and it was right decent. The new Xpert HV indicates a MV of 1280 fps vs. the old stuff that was 1220 fps. Didn't get a chance to chrono, but it cracked louder, and didn't pop-poof once. It is still a truncated cone hollow point. It's still lead, not plated, but seems to have a better hard lube than the older stuff, which didn't seem to have any lube at all. It doesn't lead the barrel but does show some lead at the top strap above the b/c gap.

Accuracy was generally comparable to Federal bulk, actually somewhat better in my older Single-Six Bisley. No evidence of any leading after 15 cylinders full. It just ate up the bull of a B-8 target that I shot at 50 yards informally resting my elbows on the bench. Well over half were in the 10 ring, and only a few flyers into the 8. I had more vertical dispersion than horizontal; hard to get elevation precise at 50 yards on that target. If not for the vertical dispersion I would have had a lot more in the 10 ring. However, that's about as good as I can do at that distance anyway with the Bisley's fixed sights. The best part is with a 6:00 hold it was on the money, so I think the velocity is higher.

I got 1.5-2" groups with my open sighted Marlin 39M Mountie at 50 yards but the majority of both 30 shot strings was in a 1" cluster. I probably should have run a boresnake through the barrel first too. I may give it a try on some cowboy lever action rimfire silhouettes. I've tested it in a few other 22s since and it seems to work well in everything but my S&W 17-5. It's still not bad, but it prefers Federal Bulk and Dynapoints. I still haven't tried it in any autoloaders.

It was $12.97 for 500 at Wallyworld. It's definately not the old white box Xpert. Looks to be good plinking and decent practice ammo for that price. It may still have autoloader feed problems with that HP truncated cone bullet, but looks to be a good revolver, bolt gun and lever action ammo for cheap.

(bang, bang, pop, woof, bang..) Is kinda what I was hinting at. Bad luck with remington bulk last time I bought it. A lot of click click with it. I do shoot mostly auto loaders. 41 Smith and MK2 ruger as well as 10 22's Couple lever guns and some single 6's lying around some where I can knock the dust off them if need be. I need to take out a couple cases of sams choice colas.

Thanks.

I used some of the Expert HP a few years ago and didn't have much luck with it. The big HP wouldn't feed at all in my Ruger MK II. It worked ok in my revolvers and Marlin 39. For cheap plinking I prefer Winchester Wildcat or Federal Classic.

More than any other caliber, .22 rimfire rifles and pistols are very fickle about their likes and dislikes.
What may be accurate in one gun can be abysmal in another.
The proper thing to do is buy a box of as many different brands as you can, set up REAL targets (not tin cans, rocks, etc.) at a measured distance (25 yards for pistols, 50 yards for rifles) and shoot from prone or a steady rest.
Fire 10 to 12 shots from each box into one target. Retrieve the target and write the make, brand and lot number of the .22 ammo on the target.
Spend a day doing this and you'll find the most accurate and reliable ammo for your rifle or pistol.
Or, like too many shooters do, you can buy whatever's on sale and bang away, ignorant of your gun's capabilities.
But if you take the time to do the above, you'll enjoy your firearm much more.
On semiautos, you should also note on the target whether the ammo fails to feed, fails to fire or fails to eject -- or if it reliable.
Keep the targets on file. They're good reminders the next time you go shopping for ammo.

I have checked and know what ammo my guns like. I just cant seem to find it. I am looking for other brands now to mostly plink with. Save the good stuff for hunting and impressing my bubbies at the range.
