I know, I know wrong website. but i have been accumulating NY-1 model 64's and 60 DAO and ran into a DAO ruger security six (i believe) marked Police Special or some such on the side. seemed set up about like my NY-1's and i know there are Rugers that NYPD used at this time.
any info on these GPNY? and the little SPNY? would be greatly appreciated.

Rich

I'm no expert, but I believe the first authorized Ruger was the SA/DA Ruger Police Service Six in .38 Spcl. (4" blued I think). After 7/1/87 these were grandfathered in, but new officers were restricted to DAO with spurless hammers. The authorized models were the GPNY in stainless 3" or 4", or the Speed Six in 3" stainless. All in .38 Spcl.

The GPNY is a DAO factory-bobbed hammer version of the GP100. The GP100 is itself a direct decendant of the Security Six and the Redhawk.

here's what i learned.

Here's what I have on the GP100's and SP101's that were built for them, from the reference:

KGPFNY-831 and KGPFNY-841 double-action only (spurless hammer) with dull finish and all-rubber grip. Known s/n range 172-08467 to 172-44934 (KGPFNY-831) and 172-31506 to 172-98145 (KGPFNY-841). "GPNY" is rollmarked on one side of the cylinder frame. A total of at least 2,561 of both models were purchased by the New York City Police Department. Both are extremely scarce.

KGPFNY-841 with regular production brushed stainless finish, a spur hammer and goncalo alves grip inserts. "GPNY" is rollmarked on one side of the cylinder frame. Known s/n range 172-98117 to 173-01535. These are an overrun of the New York City Police Department contract. Probably not over 500 produced.

KSPNY-182 New York City Police Department contract with target gray finish (all should have the short cylinder frame). Known s/n range 570-20269 to 570-47403. Rollmarked with "SPNY" on the side of the cylinder frame. "RUGER SP101" is not marked on the barrel. Probably not more than 3,000 produced. Rare.

KSPNY-182 New York City Police Department contract with brushed stainless finish. Known s/n 570-46737. Rollmarked with "SPNY" on the side of the cylinder frame. "RUGER SP101" is not marked on the barrel. Unknown quantity produced. This is probably a manufacturing overrun of the variation noted in the paragraph above. Extremely rare.

As to the Security-Six/Service-Six/Speed-Six series', Ruger did make a few of these for NY also, as follows:

GF-84NYCPD double action only (with bobbed hammer) Known s/n range 162-40766 to 162-41689. 4 known. Extremely rare. At least one of this variety is known to have been shipped with a shipping sleeve that has a shipping sleeve stamp that incorrectly states “GF-84” and “SPEED-SIX” (known s/n 162-41689). Note that this model also has a star hand stamped on the inside of the crane, possibly by an armorer outside the Ruger factory.

GS-83NYCPD double action only (no full cock notch on bobbed hammer). Known s/n’s 162-40935, 162-41364, 162-42413 and 162-42614. Only four known, extremely rare. Note that this model also has a star hand stamped on the inside of the crane, possibly by an armorer outside the Ruger factory.

Note that some of the guns in these contracts that are marked "SERVICE-SIX" on the side of the frame may have actually had their butt rounded into the Speed-Six configuration and shipped as the GS-83NYCPD model. These are very interesting hybrids, made to use up Ruger's leftover stock of the old "SIX" series because of the impending GP100 arrival.

Very nice find. Did you call Ruger to verify if was a NYCPD and request a free letter? If not you can call them at 603-865-2424

Hey Perpster,
O.K. so where was I?
it turns out the one i bought (i bought it) ser # 162-400XX shipped in May of 1987 and it is catalogue (model?) # GF-84NYCPD. at least uncommon if not rare though the reference says rare....
anyhow if you're interested they have something called the Red Eagle News Exchange (RENE) that is a publication for ruger enthusiasts. i'll prolly get a subscription, and there is a Ruger collectors assn. (who knew?) it seems i have some learning to do.
Regards,
Rich

Heres one from the way back machine...

I was looking for information on these Rugers, anyone have something to add?

I was going to buy a Speedsix 3" nypd, lettered, I had it on hold, may have missed it.

I did buy a GPNY lower than the numbers listed above. I know for sure it was issued/bought in 1991, as the officer who sold it got on at that time.

Information please.....Just because i'm curious....I met some NY city cops at FLETC in the 90's they were telling me that all of the units that were hired as cops were broken down as NYPD NYHAPD, NYTAPD, the one difference was the NY ,NJ Port Authority PD...All were to be merged except the Port Authority Police. Any body know what was the outcome..and when did they give up the DAO revolvers??? I heard they went to Glock with a stronger trigger pull????

Well, thats a lot of info but just a quick bit.

The NYPD was merged in 1995. Before that it was the luck of the draw as to where you would wind up, Housing, Transit or NYPD. Housing and Transit were looked down at for some reason, they had all the same power as and were NYPD.

New York City Police Department - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Port Authority PD is a very different thing. They are a Multi-state PD and have wider power than the NYPD. I understand that they can will and do step on NYPD. The Port Authority of NY and NJ is a scary powerful organization...

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I am pretty sure the new recruits in 1993 had to have a semi auto gun for a duty gun, the revolver was done.

It does get more complex, lots of info via google on NYPD guns hours of reading.

It would be to much to link and add.

Edit, Glocks, you can have a Glock 19 and an off duty 26 (? I forget, the compact) Anyhow they need the NY trigger at 12lb pull.

Or you ca get a Sig P226 DAO 9mm NYPD model or Smith and Wesson DAO 9mm NYPD model

Off duty has a few more choices and they have changed over the years. Like the Kahr K9 or the Beretta Cheetah, there were more that came and went. They are all DAO with heavy triggers.

Thumbs up NYPD INFO

Thanks that is what the guys from New York were saying.....Funny thing was none of them seemed excited to change from transit to patrol or houseing or so they said......Sounded like they all, no matter what division or precient were sort of set in their own divisions but that was in 92....

Off topic, the "merger" caused both a lot of good and bad. Housing and Transit promotion lists were thrown out, details were lost and their unions were dissolved, much to the dismay of their elected union officials who lost both power and extra money, but it also gave opportunities for those stuck in the "hole" or "project" to get out of their narrow focus through transfer or detail assignments previously unavailable to them.

I've got one of the GS-83NYCPD (SPEED SIX) double action only (no full cock notch on bobbed hammer). Known s/n’s 162-40935, 162-41364, 162-42413 and 162-42614. Only four known, extremely rare. Note that this model also has a star hand stamped on the inside of the crane, possibly by an armorer outside the Ruger factory. Soon to be sold on GB.

Thats a nice piece !!

I can tell you the star was stamped by the NYPD when inspected originally.

Is your gun a 4" or a 3" barrel?

With regards to rarity and serial numbers, well I am afraid that there are many many more than 4 that you have listed. Those number were done by someone looking around and that was what they came up with many years ago.

I collect this area (dao nypd guns) I follow it closely.

I have two speed sixes, legit NYPD a 3" and a 4". I know where I can get two more 3" speedies today, again legit NYPD. All are star stamped etc.

With all that being said, they are nice guns that are somewhat uncommon. They should sell in the $300 to $500 range, but you never know.

The 3" gpny is the least common of all NYPD rugers.

Good luck with your sale!

Heres some of mine.

Mine is a 3". Have you seen them before with the TRANSIT P.D. stamped on the shroud? Would it help the sale to have a photo of the officer's Transit PD badge with the # on it?
