Default Put a Speed Six on lay away

I saw a LGS’s site had a used Speed Six listed last week but couldn’t get there until today
Lucky me it was still there 2-3/4” stainless .38 spl.
It hasn’t been fired much.
No scars that I saw.
Tighter than Dick’s hat band.
Should be a fun little popper!

I vastly prefer the Speed/Service/Security Six over the GP100 and generally any other DA wheelgun that Ruger has put out since. Here's hoping they'll bring 'em back someday.

I had one with a factory spurless hammer. I liked it but eventually sold it as it was heavy for what it did. It was, however, built like a Skoda truck and will almost certainly outlast you. Congrats.

I asked on another forum if the price ($500) was fair and was told it was a very good price.
I was at a shop a couple weeks back, that had a blued Sec Six and a Speed Six in the display case. They were asking $895 and $995 but I can’t remember which was which. I think they were overly optimistically priced.

I've got a 2 3/4 .357 service six. It's a great shooter. I paid $800 for it in NY a year or two ago.

Got a blue 4" or whatever Ruger called a 4". My second favorite revolver. Tight as can be, fun to shoot with rubber grips. Which are ugly but worth it.

That wood is really nice, probably the best I've seen on a stock Ruger grip.

I bought my Speed Six a couple of weeks ago. It's a stainless 2 3/4 inch in 357. Seller was asking $750 but I didn't pay that. It is still DA/SA but hammer spur has be cut off. Noticeably heavier than my 13. 65, or 66 short barrels.

I think I might've jumped on that, even if they didn't want to budge on the price. If not you, somebody would've given them asking price. I'm wondering, as I haven't been gun-storin'/window shoppin'! You think I might know the store by chance? I'm debating on the 686 or the Speed Six. (Never handled either one, so there's that!) Good catch! Sounds like a keeper. We'll get pics maybe? And dang it! I really don't need to be spending any money on guns at this time, but I probably would've. Good catch, ACORN!

Interesting that this thread should come up right now. Just two days ago I purchased a 2.75" blue Speed Six from an individual locally. It has some finish wear, but is solid mechanically. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but expect it to be just fine.

I'm a big fan of the Ruger Six Series DA revolvers. I already have a 4" blue and a 2.75" stainless Security Six revolvers in my safe. I'll also add any more than I come across at a reasonable price.
I've always said that the worst mistake Ruger ever made was discontinuing the Six Series line of revolvers.

That's a good price... I think I paid that for my stainless Speed-Six several years ago. They respond very well to a Wolff spring kit, and some smoothing of the hammer mainspring strut to reduce the friction of it sliding inside of the coil spring.

Wow, I'm glad you picked that up, Acorn - those are just wonderful guns. I need to make some excuse to carry mine soon. Use it in good health - great find!

Speed Sixes in .38 Special are much less common, as they normally just chambered them in .357 Mag. You got a great deal on it.

Police departments were the most common customers for special order .38 Specials in any of the six series revolvers. Many of them would use .”38 Special” revolvers, but use .38 +P+ loads at near .357 Magnum pressures to get .357 Mag terminal ballistics without the political blow back .357 Magnum often garnered from the press at the time.

The Ruger revolvers were well suited to that.

Ruger Speed Sixes in 9mm are pretty rare so they generally command much higher prices than the .38s or .357s.

30 years ago one of the big distributors was practically giving them away. Maybe $149 or $159 with $10 off each if you bought 3. I managed to snag 2 .38's with 2 3/4" bbls and a "Police Service 6" with 3" bbl and SB. I sold the other 2 before they came in the UPS and managed to hold onto the 3" for maybe another couple years. Sometime I regret making a photocopy of my bound book. Great guns. Joe

A lot of security companies only bought .38 special revolvers. The nice thing about the Six series revolvers is that Ruger used the same cylinder material and/or heat treating in the .357s and the .38s. If one was so inclined, a .38 cylinder could be re-chambered to .357 easily.

I have many Ruger revolvers and just recently purchased a Speed Six stainless snubbie in 9mm. Perfect condition with box and clips. It feels great in hand but my only worry is the chambers seem tight.I really need to mic them.

The nice thing about the Speed-Six is that it "plays well with others".

A Speed Six was my very first handgun, back in 1983 or so..
Tough as nails and handsome looks, IMO.

The Security Six and Service Six play well with others, too - most folks laugh at these grips but this gun is ever so accurate as a fighting handgun for close quarters:

My 4" Service Six resides in Georgia these days, with a friend, but someday it will make its way home again.

My boy called from the LGS and asked if he should buy the LCR in 38 or 357.
When he walked in the house with the 357, after some range time, he said, "don't ever sell the Security Six.
38s in the Ruger were okay. +Ps were hard and 357s....
never again".
I took $400 out of my wallet and bought it. He threw in the holster and tax.

Loaded up 100 of 38s, +Ps and 50 were stout 357s.
Ran them that night and my hand was a wee bit sore the following day.

Bought the Sec6 in '80 for the Mrs. after it took two shots of CCI snakeshot for her to dispatch a Bufo Toad with the long barreled K22.

More better, was her reply with CCI snakeshot in the Sec6.
She's a Brooklyn girl and wondered where the big round
thing was that should be attached to the front.

Took the K22 and the Sec6 to California in the mid '80s and we punched bushes and paper at about 135 yds.

The Sec6 with a birth year Mexican silver coin.
Will finish those stocks, like the tops of the Smith's stocks below, and some others when I have time to make escutcheons.
Escutcheons for the 1911s would be a fun/interesting chore to prevent damage to the wood.
Might be called half escutcheons?

Gotta love the shape of the stocks on one of the recent Smiths shown here.
That Smith ain't anything but exquisite.

My hands do not favor traditional shaped revolver stocks/grips but my eyes do.

I was afraid someone would ask about that.

Well, despite my having specifically asked this artisan (since I'm griping, I won't name him - not either of our elk stag artists here and, as I set forth below, artists will do as their Muse leads) to craft this set so could be used with the T-grip (and sent him a photo of the gun in particular along with the mounted Tyler in use), he did not choose to build these custom stocks in a manner that allowed such usage. (And it's not just that a little relief is needed to make them fit, either: it would take some real filing and reshaping to make it work and that's not something I want to cowboy myself - these really are pretty and I wouldn't want to ruin that aspect). But I understand that when one commissions a piece from an artist, decency requires one respect what his artistic sensibility leads him to create. So, while I might have wanted to plug-and-play with the Tyler T-grip, this isn't what I got - but what I got was very lovely.

Anyway, this set is fat in thickness and gives me a lot to hang onto, but I'm sure hoping that's enough to keep their wide horns from skinning the inside of my thumb and the trigger guard from whacking my poor middle finger knuckle. But I'm not holding my breath.

I bought my first Speed Six 3" 38spl from this site and followed it up with a 2 3/4" in 357 Magnum a couple years ago. Thanks Vic

In my opinion the 357 Max Blackhawks were owned but not often shot, or heavily used in Silhouette competition. More of a lot of use or plinking with 38's occasionally.

Hey, I thought I would post a picture of my sixes. Two security and one speed. Btw I didn’t plan it but all 3 are pre-safety label on barrels, all are 357’s. I love my rugers!!!!

IMO, this is the finest description for the Ruger Series-6 revolvers: "...it was heavy for what it did." I picked up a Stainless Speed-Six last fall from the range's consignment shelves. It was a near-grail gun for me. The grips did not handle .357 recoil especially well, so I purchased Pach Grippers. As the poster states, it IS heavy, the weight of a 4" bbl gun. Now I've got to find something to do with it, concealed carry is out. A pleasant problem.

I've found IWB at 3 o'clock with the right holster negates much of the weight vs OWB where all the weight is hanging off the belt. I use an Azula IWB with a Beltman dual bull hide w/liner. My Speed Six wears Pachmayr Compact at the moment.

I went and put cash down on the
Maximum.
Oh well.
You can’t buy them all, but I’m sure as heck trying!

It ends when you die. Or go broke. Whichever comes first.

Default Ruger Speed Six 9mm

I was very happy to get this Speed Six in 9mm a few months ago for $850 by the time it got to me. Found some moon clips locally that held 2 which I've not seen before. Super fun shooter and surprisingly spicy in 9mm. Got a spurless oem hammer but haven't installed it. Did change grips to round butt Pachmayrs and got a stock wood set also. Ruger's are rugged as heck but just not as refined as Smiths or Colts.

Keep on fighting the Good fight!

Fred

Actually no.

Dicks Hatband, and being tighter than, is a much older euphemism than the Dick Tracy era. It goes as far back as the 1890s IIRC (not that I was around then ).

Tighter than Dicks Hatband refers to a prophylactic.

Meaning tighter than a rubber.

Just saying.

Just relaying the origin I was told so.
Ummmm, OK well, thanks.

Actually they did. Various forms since the middle ages and even further back, Vulcanized Rubber since the mid 1800's. Latex came along in the 1920's.

lets get back to those nice Ruger Sixes series DA's
