New old grips on Colt Combat Government Model
Finally got around to picking up some vintage medallion grips for the Combat Gov't Model that I picked up a couple years back. Gun is from 1984. I realize they're not correct for this model (I have the wrap around medallion grips made by Pachmayr), but wanted to try out the look.
Just thought I'd share.

They look nice, regardless of “correct” or not. I always liked those panels and also use them on modern Colt 1911s they don’t really belong on. The medallions are a bit cheesy, but that’s the way Colt made them.

That reminds me, I need to look for a set of these with the silver medallions for my stainless Gov't Model from 1990 (which came with Signature wrap arounds with silver Colt medallions).

I got off track a while back and decided I needed a 1911 45. First thing you know I had a dozen of them. All series 70s, Commanders manf in 70s and a couple SAs. They all had walnut grips, except a Commander / bone.
I noticed right away that the plain jane checkered walnuts were most comfortable for me. Out of all the Colt grips they are the thinnest I’ve checked.

Nutmeg Sports has the grips with the nickel medallions. I’ve bought several sets of grips from them, both gold and nickel. I’ve got the gold medallion grips on my Combat Government Model as well, and have the original Pach’s in my box of grips.

I also have a Colt Combat Government Model. While looking at your pictures, from my memory, I thought something was different from mine. I then realized what it was. Mine is a series 70 and yours is a series 80. What do you think the value of these is currently?

Purely anecdotal, but two years ago I paid less than $700 for this gun, can't quite remember the exact price now. But I know I wouldn't have paid more than that for sure. Probably closer to $625-650. The owner of the LGS was a greedy sumb1tch, and has only gotten greedier in the last two years. Given some of his other pricing recently on various items, I'd guess that today he'd put this gun out for sale in the $799-849 range.
I haven't had much luck finding recent comps from the various auction sites.

I think you're selling her short, that's in fantastic condition. I'd put GB estimate a closer to $900-1200. If you have the box then you're probably talking more like this one that ended last month.
Just a moment...

I’m glad there’s a few Colt Combat Government Pistols around. I like the wood grips you put on yours. How does your 80 Series shoot oliveheadl ? I noticed boykinlp said he had a Colt Combat Government, MK.IV 70 Series. I don’t see no pictures boykinlp. I’m not trying to hijack your thread oliveheadl, I’m just excited to see some Colt Combat Government Pistols. I’ll add pictures of my Colt Combat Government MK.IV 70 Series from 1982.

oliveheadl, I too think you’re underestimating your Colt Combat Government pistol. I don’t know about the 80 Series but I’ve seen the 70 Series Combat Government sell for slightly over 2K in excellent condition with the box.

I have a Series 70 Combat Government, but it has been, shall we say, well-loved over the years...with plenty of wear, all for which I am responsible.
It has gotten me out of a few tight spots.
It would be the last 1911 of mine to go...and yes, I pit wood grips on it.

Looks just perfect to me.
Rubber don't belong on a 1911.

That may be true for some 70 Series with box, etc, but mine's a Series 80 with no box. Maybe $900 on a good day. Of course, it's worth what someone would pay for it, but my experience is usually that the other guy's stuff is worth $$$$ but mine's worth $$.

I really like the gold medallion Colt checkered grips--in my opinion they look "right" on almost any Colt, and yes, I've bought a pistol just to get the grips.
I have yet to find another brand of checkered grips that has the same "bite" as the original Colts--when gripped firmly the pistol doesn't slip (for me).
Nice pistol, congrats.

Might not be the "correct" stocks for that particular 1911-A1, but sure looks nicer!

This is the only picture I currently have on my computer. My Colt Combat Government has the Ivory grips, but I still have the box, paperwork, and original wrap around Pachmayr grips. I did add a rubber Pachmayr bumper on the end of the magazine to make seating easier. I am the original owner and have shot one box of ammo through it. IIRC, there were few series 70's made before they changed to the series 80. I can't remember the numbers though.

Nothing as pitiful or useless as a set of Pachs wrapped around a Colt GM.
But I wipe my fishing rod handles with axle grease before casting so what do I know.

That's a nice gun. Definitely nicer roll marks than mine as a Series 70. But I had to work with what was there.
