Poseidon C-3 SLBM.

Okay, it was inert, and I didn't personally pull the trigger, but it did leave a big impression on me.

In handguns a 45/70 TC by JD Jones loaded it up it really twisted your wrist.

In Rifles I used to hunt with a 500 A square caliber 700 grain 50 caliber bullet in an improved 460 Weatherby case. I also had a 577 Westley Richards double and a light 577 Farquensen but the 500 was not only a heavy recoil but it came back a lot faster. Of course non of this recoil was noticed when you were shooting at a large animal.

The Marines let me play with some of their guns, 155 which was a real "blast", few rounds of 175, 50 cal, m-79 old style, they always made sure I was pointed in the right direction when pulling the trigger!!!!!
Navy 3" 54 which really isn't shooting since most are fired controlled. Few different machine guns. I liked the 155 best....

Not exactly a "gun"... but in TBS at Quantico, I got to strap on and fire one of these. It scared the **** out of me... even being on the right side of it's muzzle. (I was warned that it had a pretty good kick and was glad that I braced well.)

Handgun: S&W 500...Not really that bad

Rifle: .458 Winchester Magnum Ruger No.1...Wow!

Shotgun: Browning BPS 10 gauge magnum...Hard kicker

Present during the launch of an ASROC missle from the launcher on the USS Thomas C. Hart...I don't know if that counts. I should have stayed off the weather decks as instructed. Wound up with singed eyebrows and couldn't hear much for a few days after...I didn't fire it though.

I guess military counts, so I'd have to say it would be a 20mm MK-12 aircraft cannon. We had a bore-sighting range for A-4 Skyhawks, and like any other weapon system, they had to be zeroed on the range.

Biggest hand-held, would be the M-79 grenade launcher. Biggest rifle, M-1 Garand and the biggest handgun I've fired is the Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag, with 7" barrel.

Largest and most powerful shoulder fired guns I've shot were the 20mm Lahti AT rifle and 20mm Gustav recoilless rifle.

Biggest bang that I've actually pulled the trigger on was a 57mm anti-tank gun out at the Big Sandy Machine gun shoot in AZ.

Some of the boys and their toys:

My favorite part starts around 1:15... 90mm AT gun.

Many years ago, while attending the Artillery School at Ft. Sill, a group of us were hauled out to one of the ranges, where sat the biggest piece of ordnance the US Army ever had. A 240 mm "Big Annie" atomic cannon, which was demonstrated to us, using conventional ammo, of course, and we allowed to "pull the lanyard" which I vaguely recall was a lever, but that was over 50 yrs ago. It was on a flatbed type railroad car, and I think it's still there at the Artillery Museum at Ft.Sill. The barrel was very flexible, for an artillery piece, and was probably 30 ft. long made in what looked like sections. I forget the range but it was well over 100 miles.

I've fired a couple of different high powered rifles. But the gun with the most "kick" was an Ithica 12 ga. Boy, those babies don't take any of the recoil. They just put it right on your shoulder.

The first and last were Spruance class Destroyers (DD963). First commissioned about 1974 I think. I served on the USS Kinkaid DD-965 and USS Connolly DD-979 along with 2 other surface ships and a submarine when I wasn't playing guard /nursemaid to uncle Sams nukes.

My friend and I cracked off two rounds a piece out of his Ruger #1 in .458 Rigby. After which his new nickname became Igor and mine became "Lefty"

In the late 60s I was Senior Gunner on a 20mm Towed Vulcan. Probably fired around 10,000 rds through that roarin' ripsnorter! Most belts were 100% HEIT-SD. High Explosive Incendiary-Tracer, Self-Destruct. You could tear buildings down; bore tunnels in the jungle. Wowser !

Largest caliber-50-140-700

Most powerful- my .458 Lott

Most recoil- I grew up hunting with an H&R Topper 12 ga. with 3" chamber. It weighed 5.5 lbs. With a 3" magnum shell it was pretty harsh, faster and heavier than my Lott.

Most powerful handgun- That's a toss-up between a .375JDJ, and my .475 Linebaugh, but the .475 has it beat hands down in the recoil department, and I would prefer it for killing power over the .375 JDJ. On paper the .375 might have more FP of energy, but that isn't what kills.

An M-60 from the door of a helicopter... was fun at the time but that was in the mid-60's when I was still young and thought I was bullet proof.

Handgun, a .454 Casull, long gun, either a .340 Weatherby, or my 3 1/2" Mossberg with 00 buck. Shoulder whompers, each. The SG was less fun than the rifle.

Bore size isn't that large (.303), but it's a bear to haul to the range!

I'm as boring as can be.

Shotgun: 12ga 3" magnum buckshot. A few slugs, but they're no big deal.

Rifle: 30/06 I had for a few years. Finally wondered "why" and sold it.

Handgun: 44 Superblackhawk. Mostly shot 44 special level loads, but did fire off a few Magnums. With the standard Ruger grips it would kick the fire out of me. A switch to Pachmyers tamed it a lot.

I used to work at Barret Firearms, so lots and lots of .50BMG off the shoulder. I've shot as many as 15 rifles in an afternoon for score before they were packed up and delivered to the Army, 10 rounds apiece. This may not sound like much, but all the shooting was done laying on a concrete floor, with the barrel protruding through two sets of doors. The muzzle blast, even with the door set-up, was ridiculous.

I did my best shooting with their worst rifle, an M95. A bullpup design, 5rd mag-fed, obnoxious piece of dung.... I put eight rounds in one ragged hole before my nerves gave out and I started throwing "flinchies" everywhere. The cocking handle lay approx. 1" from my larynx, as I shoot left-handed, and bumped my throat during recoil every shot.

The most powerful handgun I've shot was a Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Magnum. That's the one with the frame extension over the barrel, right? I think it was a 6" barrel. I was taking a firearms course and part of the curriculum was to shoot a variety of handguns, the .44 being the last one. I rapid-fired 6 rounds through that gun. I'm not sure what kind of ammo it was, but I'm pretty sure it was factory ammo and I remember being told it was full-power loads. The palm of my hand was bright red afterwards.

The most powerful long gun I've fired was a 12 gauge Remington 870 police shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot as part of another firearms course I took. It was just a brief 2-hour familiarization session. That was several years ago. I hope to own one in the not-too-distant future.

Thanks again to John Eilertson, the master resurrector of dead threads for allowing us to take another step back in time to 2009! Well, to the subject at hand:

Largest Gun - 155mm Howitzer (no, I was not FA, but most officers were cross-trained in disciplines outside their primary MOS). Largest MG - M2. 50 BIG. Largest rifle -was 460 Weatherby Mag in a Weatherby Mk V. Largest shotgun - 10 Gauge side by side double, especially since it would fire both barrels simultaneously when we first got it -the 3 1/2" magnum loads! Largest handgun - my. 500 S&W, 8 3/8" barrel, heaviest kick and muzzle blast king - 4" S&W 500. Largest BB gun - Daisy Model 94, smallest BB gun - Daisy Peacemaker (copy of a Colt SAS, between the two, I was the best-armed 10 year old in the neighborhood, but that was a long time before 2009!

Don't worry John Eilertson, we're still working on that time machine to rescue you from the time warp - just haven't heard back from H.G. Wells yet.

Red face .460 Weatherby Magnum

.460 Weatherby Mag. with the Pendleton muzzle break--The punch and push are both awful. It feels like a 54 Buick is sideswiping you at around 70mph in the shoulder pocket.

Does military training count? I fired a 3.5 bazooka when I was in the service. You are loaded by your partner, patted on your helment and then you sight it in, and pull the most anemic trigger I have ever pulled (electrically fired, actually), and then the most unbelieveable noise and devastation you can imagine happens right in front of your eyes.

Biggest shoulder weapon for me is either the .470 Nitro (one round from a Bud Searcy double rifle), or the .50 BMG in a couple of single shots and one .50 MG. The .50 single shots were more comfortable to shoot than the .470. The Big 50 was more fun.

Largest handgun a Desert Eagle in .50 AE (I think). It is owned by the same guy with the .470. A .45-70 revolver he owns was fun to shoot too.

Another buddy has a black powder cannon I have gotten to shoot occasionally. It's about a 2.5 inch bore. Makes a lot of smoke and the lead ball penetrates like crazy in a dirt berm. Old lead bullets picked up at the range make interesting cannister shot too. He uses old plastic jars or tinfoil to hold the shot for loading. Makes a mess of a refrigerator carton if aimed right too.

458 Winchester. After about 5 rounds my shoulder joint felt like it was turning on real fine gravel.
