Civil war cannon, brass cast, 3" bore. If I remember right, it was one of 12 made in Nashville. There was no ball in it, but we used 3/4lb of black powder. The cannon's owner said that more powder could be used but since we were shooting blanks, that was all we needed. I pulled a string and BOOM! It was loud as hell and blew the leaves off a nearby tree.

Mabe not the biggest cal., but a mod 71 win with steel butplate in 348, kills on one end and cripples on the other. I also shoot a 62 cal-20 ga smoothe bore muzzleloader that will bring tears to your eyes if you load er up.

A Browning Ma Deuce 50 caliber for a long gun and a S&W 500 for a handgun. I missed out on shooting a Lahti 20mm Anti Tank gun at the Eastern Oregon machine gun shoot a few years ago. They ran out of ammo before I got to the front of the line.

Ruger Blackhawk in 44 Mag. for revolver
Marlin XS7 in .308 for rifle
1911 in 45acp for semi-auto, althought I find .40 S&W to have more felt recoil.
Remington 12 Gauge pump for shotgun

With my Rhuematoid Arthritis I am not a big fan of recoil.

Desert Eagle .50. A guy in the next lane had just bought it, and he was so excited he just had to offer it to me and my shooting partner. He didn't know us from Adam. Of course we took him up on it. I won't be running out to buy one.

Default .458 Win Mag Pistol

Elephant cartridge from a handgun .458 Win Mag with 510 gr. Bullets in my Competitor Corporation single shot Pistol, 10” barrel (similar to the Magnum Research Lone Eagle pistol). The picture shows the 510 gr slug on the left, next to a 44 mag cartridge in the middle, and the 458 cartridge on the right, 5,000 ft. lb of muzzle energy, 510 gr heavy steel jacket (magnet sticks to the slug), designed for elephants and Cape Buffalo, chambered in my Pistol. Yes it hurts.

20 mm Gatling gun.
Ok! It was a remote fire.
I used to have 338 Mag.
I flinched so bad I couldn’t shoot it from a bench.
And I did have not one but 2 LH Mauser 3000s in 375 H&H.
Sold both before I ever shot them.
Probably a hangover from the 338.

Thompson Contender chambered in .45/70. As my old grandmother would say that is just too much sugar for a dime! I fired it the first time out of ignorance. I fired it the second time in the vein of "getting back up on the horse that th'owed me"
There won't be a third time unless something very very bad is about to happen to me. I mean it.

The first pic is a graphic demonstration of the difference in the standard .45acp and the .45/70. If you are wondering about the recoil of this round in such a light fire arm...well, there's yer clue.

I don't care how big and strong you are. I don't care which stance you use. You fire this beast and you will be takin' a couple of steps backward.

Many years ago got to shoot a Lahti 20MM. As far as a real shoulder fired hunting type rifle... A 600 Nitro out of a Holland Double rifle. Very hard to get ammo for back then but the fellow let me shoot 2 rounds...I think he told me they were the middle loading but don't remember the load. If shooting at a head of dangerous game I doubt it would have been too bad...but I don't need to shoot one again. I also had a Contender in 45-70.... it was a bit violent.

A guy let me fire one round out of his 460v at the range once.
The concussion was like a hard thump in the chest...

Biggest shoulder fired rifle was a 50BMG back before they were
cool. Built on action from spotter gun on recoiless rifle. Brutal
recoil. This doesn't count M79 & 203 units.
Quad 50BMGs & single M2s
Dual 40mm Bofors
4.2 mortars
106mm recoiless

I did help load 105s several times and a 8"sp once but didn't
Personally touch them off. 50 cal & 40mm were my specialties
and everyday guns. So I have no 1911 war stories.

In the military in VN, the 50 Cal Browning on a tripod.

I wanted to pick it up and fire from the hip John Wayne style, but I'm really not as stupid as I pretend to be. Nor as strong, apparently, as the Duke.

EDITED to add: I don't actually remember seeing anyone in a movie firing a 50 cal Browning from the hip, though in some movies one of the guys cradles a 1917 water-cooled Browning and fires it. I've heard that John Wayne did it in one of his WW2 movies, but don't know if it's true or another bit of baloney.

The 50 stayed in its tripod and the tripod stayed on the ground. This was just a play shoot outside Phu Bai one afternoon. Can't recall why, just remember it was kinda fun, almost like going out in the woods at home for some target practice.

As a young policeman, another officer brought a 460 Weatherby and a 458 Win Mag to the range.

I shot the Weatherby first and thought it was not really that bad. I held it tight and leaned into it, and really concentrated on the trigger. I was truly surprised when it went off and more surprised that I hit the target where I was aiming. After a few rounds with that, I switched to the 458.

I was halfway convinced that if I was on safari in Africa, facing a charging elephant, I might have actually hit the poor thing in the forehead with the 460.

The 458 was much easier to shoot than the Weatherby, felt like a regular rifle and really was not unpleasant to shoot, though I expect more than a few rounds would have been way too many.

Later, taking a vacation day from work, I was shooting my rifles at the range and got to talking with another shooter who had a 45-70 Contender which I shot a few times and really did not enjoy. Then the range closed at noon and I was getting ready to leave when a RO pulled out a 375 Contender.

I was still leaving, but he called me to come try it. I wanted to say no, but was more afraid of being called a wus (which I readily admit I am-just don't wanna be called one). Two shots with the thing, a smile and thank you to the RO and I was out of there with a very sore hand.

Avoided that guy like the plague from then on.

Bob

Reading this thread got me to thinking about some of the guns that I have shot; 45-70 revolver, Desert Eagle .50, .50 BMG rifle, M79 bloop tube, 37mm gas gun, and a Ruger No.3 in 45-70 loaded to near .468 spec (ouch).

Forgot to add a 3.5 rocket launcher.

Back in my hand-gun silhouette shooting days, I shot "production" class with a Ruger .44 mag., and was never intimidated by that gun. However one time in a team event, we were required to shoot "unlimited" class as well. I borrowed a Thompson Center in full length .308 to shoot. YOWZZAAHH !!!!!

Old model TC Ccntender chambered in 30-40 Krag in re-chambered 30-30 barrel.

Recoil phenomenal, bright daylight-visible flash and concussion prodigious. Expensive to shoot lately too.

or

2" M-640 357 Centennial with 125 grain full bore ammo.

Ruger comes out to an event every year at our huge county range. They bring dozens of wares for the public to try out, basically just for the cost of ammunition. To their credit, they bring full-house fodder if that's what you choose to use. Had to sample the baddest snubnose on the planet, the Alaskan in .454 Casull. My tolerance limit was 3rds of full-house Hornady .454, though I can't recall which flavor. Our targets are hanging clay pigeons from 15-50yds. I fired DA, and actually hit what I aimed at, at CLSOE range, LOL. I waited an hour for my hand to recover, then did it again. Wouldn't have wanted to touch off that 4th round in either session.

Their Guide Gun in .416 Ruger was also a treat. I just started with a nice, erect posture, and it darn near caused me to go over backwards like one of those bedouin-clothed shooters in the famous you-tube video. I think I took two quick steps back to steady myself, with their spotter ready to grab the rifle. I was better prepared for the 2nd, and last, shot. It was a hoot!

Touched off a couple with both the Ma Deuce and the Mk19 launcher whilst in the service. Those would be the most powerful, natch.

Rifle: British double in 600 Nitro Express. I think the line from a song "We will we will rock you" comes from someone familiar with these!

Default Weatherby

.460 Weatherby Magnum. It was a custom made rifle of about 12 pounds and the recoil was tolerable. I once fired a 458 Winchester Magnum in a 9 pound rifle that nearly took my shoulder off.

A "friend??" handed me a double barrelled 10 ga. shotgun with 3.5" magnums chambered. Target was a 55 gal steel drum about 15 yds away.
First round, fine, caved in the side of the drum. Second round, not so good, as I accidentally touched the second trigger during the recoil from the first round, so the gun essentially doubled, and not being ready for the second round, the gun stock wacked my jaw something awful. That and shooting an overloaded Hawken .58 cal rifle with a skinny brass butt plate, from another "friend??" were the only guns that ever hurt me.
Never shot either one again.

This is nothing now days but when I was 10 I was handed a 30.06 by some older guys. Shooting from a rest the results were a bad case of scope eye for me and lots of laughter for them.
Next week they let me shoot a 12 gauge and I fell down on the first shot and dropped the gun on the asphalt road. This time the laughter was on them.

Some kind of wildcatted .358 Win-mag in a custom XP100. My wrist literally felt like I punched a brick wall.

The GPMG on a 1970's SAS Land Rover (Pink Panther camo)

Probably only a 7.62 FN MAG, but quite fun in full auto mode.

Largest bore would be M-203, greatest firepower would be M-60. Sporting arms would be T/C 30-30 in handguns, 7mm Mag in rifle.

.458 Lott. In a portable gun.

Edit. In case you're wondering. Didn't like it much.

Fun thread resurrection!!!

In a handgun, besides a .44 Magnum, a .30 Carbine in Thompson Center Contender or a .35 Remington in a Remington XP-100. I can't recall for sure but I think the latter.

In a rifle it was a CZ-550 "European" in .416 Rigby. THAT was entertaining.

Hmmm... let me think.

Was it the Browning Auto-22 in .22 Short? No.

Was it the S&W 29-2 in .44 Magnum? Let me think again...

Was it the Sauer 202 Supreme-Lux in .375 H&H Magnum?

I really can't remember. I think my brain was a bit rattled after I shot the Sauer.

Best wishes everyone!

For the shoulder-fired category, it's the M67 90mm recoilless rifle:

For the "other guns" category, its the M109 Paladin 155mm SP howitzer:

For the handgun category, its the S&W 500:

And, finally, for the "all time favorite" category, none other than MA Deuce:
