There won't be a third time unless something very very bad is about to happen to me. I mean it.

The first pic is a graphic demonstration of the difference in the standard .45acp and the .45/70. If you are wondering about the recoil of this round in such a light fire arm...well, there's yer clue.

I don't care how big and strong you are. I don't care which stance you use. You fire this beast and you will be takin' a couple of steps backward.
My Brother had a T/C Contender in .45/70. In factory condition you might get three shots off before you had to put it away. But after he put a JP Recoil Eliminator (JP Howitzer Brake) and a set of Rubber Pachmyr Grips on it, it was a pleasure to shoot, I could shoot it all day long then. The low pressure .45/70 Makes a big impressive low Frequency Boom, fun to shoot and fun to hear. Unlike my .458 Win Mag Pistol, which is much more powerful and hurt a lot more, but is was more of Loud “Crack” do to the high pressure/high intensity round, somehow not as satisfying as a big BOOOOOOM! of the .45/70. ;-)

If you equate powerful = painful the most powerful hand gun was a 14" TC in 44 mag. I was stupid and fired 2 rounds of my own ammo. I guess the first one didn't hurt enough. The same ammo in my Ruger Redhawk 7-1/2" was comfortable.

In rifle it is my Sharps Quigley replica in 45-70. Loaded with Accurate Arms 5744 powder it was robust, switched to AA2015 and redefined agony -- good news it was only 5 rounds.

Hand held would be an M79 grenade launcher or a laws rocket.

My brother was on a 8" howitzer crew. He loved his gun.

I guess you wouldn't call it a gun but I threw the switch to launch a Poseidon missile from the launch tube on a submerged submarine back in my Navy days.

Damn, it was fun!

It is an 8 inch, towed howitzer. It went into service during WWII and was used into the 60's. You pull it with a 10 ton prime mover truck, has a crew of eight (which you don't need. It can be shot with about four people.) It will deliver one round per minute.

You need to swab out the "chamber" with a wet mop after each round is fired in order to extinguish any burning powder fragments. If not...you are in for a surprise when you load the charge.

I was wondering who would pull that one out first.

My best friend, a Vietnam artilleryman, pulled the trigger on an 8” continuously for about 12 hours, laying down blocking fire for a patrol that got dumped in a hot LZ.

Now all we need is a Navy gunner who’s pulled the trigger on a 16”.

I'm not really a high powered kinda guy. For long guns 12 gauge 3 inch turkey load is it. For handguns the most powerful I own is .40.

I did fire a couple of rounds of .454 Casull from a big honkin' Taurus revolver (not mine) that must have weighed about 3 pounds. That was quite an experience for a guy who shoots mostly 9mm, .38 special, and .223.

45/70 line gun. Actually shot blanks, but propelled a 45 cal brass rod about a foot long with an eye machined on the end. The string was tied through the eye and the rod was shot over the victim. This particular model had a medallion in the butt in honor of the U.S. Lifesaving Service, a forerunner of the Coast Guard. I "earned" the honor by accurately firing a .22 cal line gun after watching several others miss the target downwind, I figured in the windage......

I was handed the gun with the proviso, "Won't need any windage on this one"
You could have molded those medallions in my should for about ten days afterwards!!!!!

I shot a .500 BPE double rifle many years ago, 2 times. Heavy recoil but not sharp, a big push. Have shot a .375 H&H several times, not really unpleasant at all. Had a Ruger 77 in .338 Win Mag years ago that was a punisher with 275 grain bullets. That straight stock and fairly light weight - the bolt handle would rap my index finger knuckle sharply every time. I've always imagined the .340 and .378 Weatherbys were wicked in the recoil department but have never shot either. The hardest kicking thing I've shot is my Mossberg 835 pump with 3.5" turkey loads - 2 1/8 ozs of no. 5s will get your undivided attention.

LONG GUN - A model 1766 Charleville musket. It's hard to imagine going into battle with this thing.

PISTOL - Ruger Red Hawk 44 magnum. 44 specials are fine but the magnums not so much.

MOST FUN - S&W Victory 22lr. pistol.
