I got back my Winchester Model 12 that I picked up a while back that had an awful polychoke on the barrel and had been sitting on a rack at the local gun store for months. So I had my local gunsmith cut the barrel at 20 inches and add a bead. I took it to the range today with some Remington 2 3/4 OO buck. The target here was shot from 12 yards away. The whole in the top was from the wad skidding sideways through the target. The recoil from this gun with just a regular buttplate is actually better than from my Remington 870 tactical that had a thick pad on it. It was very pleasant to shoot and it cycled beautifully. All 5 shots were in rapid succession.

I love Winchester Model 12 shotguns. It is good to read that yours is rehabbed and back on active duty.

David;
I believe you have caught the essence of the dome defense gun. Any burglar would be proud to be shot by that gun. Hemingway had a model 12 as did The Duke, you are in great company.

What is the white-colored, crystalline material behind your target --- some sort of Caribbean beach sand such as found at expensive resorts?

Very nice!

I have my Grandfathers, a 30Ē full choke 1950ís vintage gun.
Iím kicking myself now for passing up some polychoke guns and doing the same thing youíve done. Iíll have to see about fixing that.

Hey David; that's a BUTE! I admire your courage in cutting it down to a workable length.

So, tell me David; what kind of Nuclear shells are you shooting that put about 40 00Buck holes on target. That was just one shell; right?

Yeah, right!

But ... but ... where is the mag tube extension and the folding black plastic tactical stock?

Don't forget all the lasers and tasers ...

David, now you have a lifetime gun. I never understood why people got so excited about the new "tacticool" black shotguns when there were so many old classic model 12s available. Seven shots with a steel and walnut proven platform, why try to improve on perfection. It looks good.

Here's mine. It started out as a short barrel and someone sporterized it by adding a weaver choke. A WWII riot, that I got in 1954 from Mongomery Wards fo $55.00.

Very nice weapon you got.

Here is my gun story about the "one that got away" Saw a nice 1897 at my gun shop for a great price. I noticed the barrel was enlarged at the end of the magazine so I passeded on it. A week later I get my Cheaper than Dirt catalogue and guess what. Had 1897 riot barrels for $56. Called the dealer and gun was sold.

What you pass up you will never make up

I got the idea for this little project after seeing a couple of guys I work with spending major dollars on their "tactical" 12 gauge pumps. I admit I bought a tactical 870 Remington, but relaized that I didn't need all the doo-dads and bells and whistles. This is a house gun, I am not on the SWAT team, so I didn't need the fancy stock and forearm and all that. If that is your choice, more power to you. I know where there are 2 other model 12's right now, both are pretty cheap, but they have their original barrels intact, (no polyhokes like mine had) but for someone in the know, what a house gun. I also know where there are a couple of Ithaca 37's, Stevens, older 870 Remingtons, etc. All very cheap, and all would make great house guns just by cropping the barrel. Why spend all that money?
