My co-worker has a Winchester Model l2, 12 ga. with vent rib. He believes his father purchased it in 1958. Overall shape is good, but used. Chambers 2 3/4 inch shells, vent rib. Serial number is 17835xx. Can anyone give DOB and approximate value or a link to info.?

1959. Not enough info to advise on a value.

Thank you. I'll try to post pics tonight, perhaps that will help with value.

Factory vent rib Model 12's werent very common until towards the end of the Model. Most of the vent rib guns the ribs were installed by Simmons Gun Specialties in Kansas and the rib is marked as such on the side. If there is something on the top of the action that mates with the rib on the barrel it is probably factory.
Another thing about factory ribs is that in most cases they werent put on field guns except the Model 12 duck gun. Most of them were put on target guns (ie Skeet, Trap, and Pigeon) usually if its a target gun it has pretty good wood on it.
