WW2 Time capsule 1911
Found in a local gun shop that just opened. Pretty rare item to find, probably not more than a few hundred of these left remaining in this kind of shape. I had no idea what it was but I knew the price was good so I picked it up last week, and I've had a blast researching it since.
This is the story as I understand it after some research, and I will gladly welcome any corrections or elaborations.
In 1962 the DCM, precursor to the CMP, released a limited number of surplussed 1911's to the public for $17 apiece. Most were of the same sort being released today, mixmaster and well used examples for the most part...but a random lucky few individuals were selected to receive instead not more than 500 unfired and unissued Remington Rand 1911's still in their kraft govt boxes with two magazines wrapped in oilproof paper.
As far as I'm aware this is the only instance of the Remington Rands 1911's coming onto the civilian market in unissued, unfired condition in their government boxes.
These Remington Rands were all in the same group of serial numbers that date to the last few months of wartime production in 1945 and were contract overruns that were not needed at the time and were stored for later use. Eventually most were issued over the years, but in that one instance in 1962 a few hundred maybe were mixed in with the ones released to the DCM. Of those, how many survived in near mint condition with the box intact for the last 60 years?
However many that is, this looks to be one of them.

Can you give me the first few numbers of the serial number. I have one in same condition no box or extra mag. When I first saw it at a LGS it had a shoulder holster with it and when I went back to buy it they couldn't find the holster. Wouldn't doubt it had the craft box and extra mag too. This LGS has no problem separating the goodies when they come in.

My Dad got one of those back in the day. I still have it in the box. The last time it was shot was fifty years ago when I was a teenager. Still looks brand new.

Very nice score. I'm not into 1911s that much, but the provenance on that one as a military arm is impeccable.
I wish the cardboard box my military Steyr GB came in was in the same condition as your box.

If you paid the $1900 sticker price you are indeed a lucky man. I saw one in the same unfired condition sell at a LGS about five years ago. Asking price was $3700. I don't know what the actual selling price was as I wasn't the buyer but I can say it didn't sit on the shelf long.

Slide/frame mismatch CMP guns were hitting that price last month. Very nice snag.

$1,900 is an incredible deal for that pistol. I would expect a dealer to ask twice that much these days.
My Dad had one of those unissued condition DCM pistols that he got in the early 60’s. His was an Ithaca. He traded it for a new S&W 36-1 in 1980. I still have the Chief’s, and still wish he’d kept the Ithaca.

A beautiful piece! With some searching on the webs you could find a WWII holster, belt, and mag pouch to go with it.

Wow, if I had seen that for that price I'd have to jump on it.
Is it the photo or did someone attempt to rub out an idiot scratch?

The block of RR's that contain the few that were released into the public is the very last few months of production. They seem to be in a range of about 20,000 guns with the majority being in The
2,430,000 to 2,460,000 range or thereabouts.

Are the original magazines still with it? If so, do they have a letter code stamped on the toe of the magazine? If so, what letter?

I didn't pay $1900. If I'd known what I was looking at I would have just paid the sticker price. I didn't, and I'm super cheap, so I argued and dickered and threw $100 bills on the counter until we settled on an out the door price of $1700. Thats something like $1550 before taxes.
I'm sure someone who knew what they were looking at would have been aghast at watching us negotiate because nobody in the room knew what they were looking at.
I had a hunch and got really lucky.

Its the lighting, it does have a fairly prominent idiot scratch, Whether from improper assembly at the factory or by a previous owner I don't know.

I checked the serial number on mine its 1334xxx. Thanks for the reply on the range. Mine must be a lunchbox gun from a typewriter factory.
