I don't remember either. But since they're hard to get these days, I figured that I'd best do some "getting". I'm going to be out... eh, scalper's premium applies, but not the high end up such pricing. Basically it is costing me my spare .45 auto and an old Colt SP1.

Other than that I should throw out the Chicom holosight that comes with the gun, what's the short course in what I should know about these? I think the "in" thing is to change out the handguards and possibly the stock for 551 furniture?

What you should know is that they are well made, shoot real nice, and will probably last a long time. Given that they are a piston gun, they offer some good performance, although I've not shot mine long enough to say with any certainty that it'll last longer than a standard AR.
One thing to know - these are not lightweight guns - in fact they are pretty heavy compared to a Lightweight Sporter styled AR.
I put a Millet DMS-1 on mine, although I should have sprung for a more high end set of optics. Shrug.
Neat gun, but I grab my M4 more often than not, just have not found it to be the "go to" rifle that it would seem to be with all the hype.
Maybe I'd like it better with a folding stock (?)
One thing, I take my Ceiner 22lr conversion unit with me when I go plinking often, so a standard AR gets more action because of this, due to the price of 556 Nitro these days.. Not aware of any conversion units for the Sig as of yet.

1st thing to check is binding in the charging handle, seems to be a problem lately. I got mine 3 weeks ago and joined www.sigarms556.com there's a lot of good info on there. Mine does have some binding and I have had FTF's, 2 jams and 1 double feed in the 1st 90 rounds I've shot. I had the most issues with Sig's mag but I used 2 new Magpul mags today. Looks like I may have 1 of the 556's with the charging handle problem. Mine sticks a little going over the hammer but others have had them completely hang up on the hammer.
I also have the Holo version which gets bad reviews. I'm having trouble getting it to zero but I'm probably going to get an Eotech 516 anyway.

Now, I will say I enjoy the gun and once these hiccups are taken care of it will be even more fun. My guess is, like every other EBR manufacturer, that things are slipping through just trying to get them out.

There a damn fine gun, period. I bought the holo version a few months back and despite the reviews with the holo sight I haven't had any problem with mine. In time I "may" swap it out with an Eotech 512 but I'm in no hurry. As far as being with the "in" crowd I'm not fond of the 551 hand guards. You know what they say about buying something only wishing you had bought something else.

Over the years I've had 4 different Colt AR's and for one reason or another I wasn't happy with them and sold them. My Sig doesn't need any "enhancements", I'll keep it. It does exactly what its intended to do with little effort.

There's quite a bit of info on the Sig site about the changes some have made to them. Why, I have to ask? Because someone else did? It's mostly aesthetics to me.

2Loud4You:
Will the sight fit my SCAR? I sorta like the 556 and considered buying one. Actually I bought 12 Sig 556 mags (6 boxes with 2 mags/box) in anticipation of buying the rifle but changed my mind basically because of the weight and, to me, the unique balance of the rifle. Any one want to buy 12 Sig 556 mags?

I liked the SIG, when it was announced I put down my money. Then I waited, and waited, and waited some more. I can only take so much waiting. I took my SIG money and applied to an XCR from Robinson Arms. I am glad I did.

If it has a rail then yes, it'll fit. You bought 12 Sig mags?! You know it uses standard AR mags. I don't know what you paid for them but I just bought 5 Magpul pamgs for $17.95 a piece.

I'm with ohiococonut, I don't like the 551 handguards either.

The Sig mags do have the ability to be "connected" for those that want such. I've got a pile of AR mags and some new brand of polymer wonder mags with connectors included are only 16.99 a piece at the local MCX. However some people seem to prefer the Sig mags.

Anyway, the particular rifle I'm getting has the flip up BUIS front and back on it, but I'll probably strip an Aimpoint or C-More off one of my M4 clones. What I'm pretty sure is a rebranded NC Star optic will either go on Ebay, in the trash can, or I suppose I could stick it on my .30-30 just for the incongruity of it. I don't know why someone would want one to place on an expensive rifle like the SCAR. The C-More railway units are relatively expensive and are at least a quality unit. FN was giving them away free with PS90s and FN2000s for a while.

I'm hoping that I'm getting one that is "bug free" since I wanted a level of quality equal to a 6920.

My local P&G took a 556 in on trade recently. It seems well put together but is "nose heavy".

If they were less expensive, I might try one. They aren't so I'll stick with my ARs.

They're "nose heavy" because they are gas piston vs. gas impingement like your AR.

Yep-agreed. The balance is off for a reason-but the balance is still off.

That's why, unless you get the SWAT version, they come with polymer hand guards to reduce weight. Regardless of weight, I still enjoy it. I'll probably add an AR to my stable someday though.

I had one about a year ago, installed the 551 handguards for better ergonomics and really liked the weapon until I went to install a BUIS and found that the factory BUIS would not align with an AR BUIS. There was only one aftermarket manufacturer of replacement front sights, and the wait was months.

Further, when I contacted Sigarms about spares they gave me some prices that were more in line with that for H&K parts. When I asked about availability, most of the spares in which I was interested were out of stock, and no, we don't know when we'll have them.

So I sold the 556. Nice as it was, and as accurate as it was, I don't miss it at all.

I am somewhat of a mag hoarder. I have the usual Colts (mostly 20-rds), a pile of pMags (30-rd @ $14.20 w/o the window and $17.05 with the window) and H&K steel mags. I bought 12 Sig mags ($40 for 2 mags + 1 coupler) in anticipation of buying a 556. Even though the 556 is supposed to take any AR mag, I figured that no one knew the Sig 556 better than Sig.

Again I believe the 556 is a fine rifle, but too heavy and poorly balanced for me. The Sig actually reminded me of the HK 91.

A friend of mine has one and I've shot it some. I like it, but agree that the added forward weight gives it an odd feel to me.....I'm used to ARs. He claims that the extra weight out front helps him in 3-gun matches, feels the gun settles back after each shot better than an AR does. I imagine this is pretty subjective stuff, but he might have a point, it makes some sense.

I like the gun. If I had to choose between it and a 16" AR I'd probably opt for the AR simply because I'm accustomed to handling, shooting, stripping, cleaning and working on ARs, but the Sig is fairly impressive. I know one guy who claims he's fired his 5000+ times without cleaning it, and it's still going strong. If he's speaking the truth I'd have to say that's something......

Actually the Sig mag is a major downfall of the gun. Most people just toss them as they're just not up to par.

I'll still have four ARs even after parting with one towards the Sig, so I suppose that even if I don't like it, I can use it as a low maintenance (or lower anyway) beater gun.

(And yes I still have my AK, FAL, Mini 14 and M1 carbine to take care of all those "should buy instead" problems, since I never could make up my mind either.)

I'm a bit worried about complaints I've read about the rear BUIS failing. This one does at least have a flip up front post already on it that will hopefully be serviceable. I guess I'll have to strip one of my M4 clones of all its goodies and stick a carry handle on it to flesh out the Sig if the BUIS *and* the holosight are both questionable.

I'm probably over paying and I'll probably miss my old SP-1, but I suppose that at least I'll have it out of system to get one of the newer EBR toys.

I can't co-witness through the holo sight with the BUIS so I can't comment on the rear sight. My front sight is the fixed, hooded sight and seems good and sturdy.

If anyone is in the market for an EBR and considering the SIG5556, may I also suggest taking a good look at the Robinson XCR.

I bought my first AR15 last fall. Soon after that I wanted another, and wanted something different. I considered both the SIG and the XCR. I handled them both, talked to a lot of people, read as much as I could find, and it was a tough decision.

I went with the XCR and am VERY pleased with it.
