I have a 1941 Johnson 30-06, 85%, all original, but with a posibly re-finished stock. I listed it on Calguns.com and a guy offered a rare 1960 Colt SAA .44 Spl., 7 1/2", blue & case, in immaculate condition plus cash for my big Johnson. He valued his Colt at $2000 and would kick in another $2000. I'm really into these Colts, more than S&W's. Owning 5 or 6. His Colt is very rare, if it's not re-barreled. These Johnsons are getting very expensive. But what ain't.

BTW, my price for the Johnson was a firm $4200. And I'm in no real hurry to sell it. But would.

From what you wrote, you want the Colt if it is what you think it is more that the 06. Ask him to split the difference and go for it.

Garton's reference shows 62 made in that configuration in 1960 with a total of 134 for the entire second generation run. If the Colt is immaculate I'd jump on it! Especially if it has the box!

Sounds like you might suspect a rebarrel job on the SAA. If there is any possibility of that, then only do a trade when a factory letter arrives confirming the rare configuration.
Then if confirmed, the condition would have to be collector grade/NIB for investment purposes to make the deal.

Personally,,I'd keep the J/A. I know that the Colts are what they are and everyone is quick to point out the rarity & value of this one and that one. But how many are as quick to put up the money these days.

But there is no doubt about the rarity of original J/A rifles, even if the stock is refinished. There are very few around anymore and the price on those has risen quickly in the past couple of years,, probably faster than the Colts which have seemed to level out somewhat. Even the later Winfield Arms Co parts guns/sporters demand some decent money.

I bought one for $750 eight years ago and quickly sold it for $1500. Wish I had kept it now. Besides,,they're fun to shoot!

The possibility of legislation taking the J/A out of circulation is always a possibility I guess,,being an assault rifle of sorts. But the non-detachable mag is a plus.

In the end, it's always what interests you most. You have the current values on each well focused it appears.

Good luck which ever direction it takes you.

What do you really want? Is it the Colt that has been offered or it it something else. I would be inclined to sell for cash and then look for what I really wanted rather than take the Colt that has popped up as part of a trade. But you are the only one who really knows what appeals to you.

38-44HD45, This guy wanted to see my Johnson so I told him to meet me at my job. He was very impressed with my Johnson and asked if the price was firm. I said yes. As much as he liked my it he said he wanted one in better condition. That hurt. But I said OK knowing he wouldn't find a more impressive Johnson in the state. So we went our seperate ways.

Not looking to side track things.
A buddy at the club gave me his deceased father's collection of "American Rifleman".
In the early 50's there were ads for surplus Johnson semi-Auto rifles for $76!!!
A 1911 was $34 and a 1911A1 was $38.
The Johnson co. had an ad in the late 40's for custom rifles, gunsmith services and bluing.

Personally, I'd take the Colt...but a buddy would keep the Johnson. Of all the military guns the Johnson is my least favorite. The trouble with SAA's is I cant seem to hang on to them. Ive owned over 100 and dont have a one of them, which is pretty bad for someone that wants a matched pair of them.

I had two Colt SAA 44 Specials along time ago. It so happens I want another one right now.I can't afford to just flat out buy one at the moment. But the problem with this one is it's TOO nice for my grubby hands. So I might get it and watch it's value increase and MAYBE ocasionally shoot it. But I probably woud just keep it and shoot the ones I have. I'll see it in a week or two. I'm not into military stuff so the Johnson is just money in the bank, really. Hey, Moondawg. What's this "storage" and "hall of shame"? Is that something real here?

Yep, it is. You'll get suspended for your pottymouth post about your Johnson. You might want to edit it to be family friendly.

Me thinks the statement made about the big johnson caused others to drift some.
I been reading the thread cuz I KNEW some would drift it. Under normal circumstances I find it humorous and harmless. However, now may not be the time to push Lee as his buttons are pretty sensitive right. I believe your post to be innocent, but the drift to be a little close to the hot spot

I think the rarity of the Johnson will outweigh the SAA.

If you do get this SAA, will you shoot it or just let it sit in the safe?

The Johnson is already a known value, a little over 2x the Colt. If you shoot the Colt will the value decrease? I don't think the Johnson will devalue if you shoot it, it has already been shot.

All of that, plus I have a safe full of old military guns and just wish I could afford a Johnson to put in there.

It was just 2-3 years ago they were going for around 2K, IIRC. The value of them is increasing much better than the Colts at this time.

The historical significance of the Johnson rifle is important. I would keep the rifle.
