I have a uncontrollable urge to get a Remington VTR in .223.

This is the one with the triangular barrel and the green stock and black inserts. The barrel has an integral muzzle brake that’s machined-in during production.

I have a Super Sniper scope that I can mount.

But before I go running off in hurry looking for one, I figured for once in my life time I would get some advice.

Is this the best rifle in .223 I could buy from Remington in that price range of $700.00.

Personally I like the new short barreled tactical better although I am not big on the Hogue stock. I have one in 308 and love it. I have seriously considered one in 223, but as I own a 222 700V and an M-4 I really dont have the need.

Around here the tactical is about $200 less than the VTR

Gander Mountain was running a promo- an SPS Varmint w/ a "Remington" 4-12 scope for $599. A friend bought one, broke in the barrel, and shot some sub-moa groups. We put a good trigger in it, a good scope, and loaded some Ballistic Tips seated .020 off and it shoots sub-1/2 MOA. I don't know for how long, but it's a lot of gun for the money.

Good shooting.

I bought a Weatherby Vanguard .223 for $399 from Sportsmans Warehouse. Mounted a Leupold VXI 4-12X scope and it is one accurate, low recoil gun. The factory test target was 3/4", and I duplicated that pretty easily with 50 round value pack ammo. I haven't even tried premium ammo since it has gotten so expensive and 3/4" groups are good enough for now.

Everyone should own a .223 bolt action.

My guess is that you will enjoy any Remington bolt rifle in .223. Without getting into the tactical side of things, it can come down to size and weight. Is this something you will want to walk with or sit with?

I had a 700 in .223 that a very skilled riflesmith offered to rebuild. It was portable when I got it and shot OK. Have not shot it since I got it back. Ihave no doubt the accuracy is improved but it is not as convenient to carry.

My question would be the performance of the triangular barrel. I've not seen anything about it.

Life is short. I'd go for it.

I have a Model 7 SS in .223 --- my GP "varmint" rig, short, light, handy --- about at the other end of the spectrum from what you're describing. I like the M7 for my purposes, but consider your intended use. Also keep in mind that the .223 is inferior to many other calibers used for similar missions in rifles of similar length, weight, etc. You might consider a .22-250 or Swift if length and weight aren't issues...

I have a 700 PSS in .223 and love it. It shoots milsurp 62 gr sub moa and Black Hills blue box 69 grain about 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

I've been considering a VTR in .308. I like the weight, so it could be used as a deer rifle besides a long ranger, but the brake is a total turnoff.

I've got a 700 VLSS thumbhole in .223. It's the Varmint Laminate, Stainless Steel with the thumbhole stock topped with a stainless Leupold in 6.5-20X-40. It's a tack driver for sure with a 40gr V-Max.

Unfortunately I haven't heard very good reviews from the local gunshop on the VTR.
