Anybody had any experience with a Steyr M40?
A gun dealer in my area is selling one for $450 and is advertising it as a "collectible."
All the reviews on the internet either love it or call it junk.

Steyr is more or less pulling out of handgun sales to the U.S. market, so I suppose that makes it somewhat "collectible".

Call CDNN if you want one, they had them cheaper than 450 not long ago. Parts, holsters, and spare mags are likely to be a problem in the future.

have one, excellent pistol.
for the amount of use the average shooter will put on a handgun, the availability of parts is not a big issue- they rarely break.
holsters for the G23 fit the original M40 perfectly; dunno about the newer A-1 design.
$450 is on the high side of the price range that you might find around the internet, but the dealer's price already has the shipping and his fees rolled into it, added costs that you would need to pay if you purchased from an out-of-State seller.
If the pistol feels "right" in your hand, and fits the type of shooting you enjoy, then it is a good choice. They are quite accurate for a service pistol and have a very low bore axis, so the perceived recoil and muzzle rise is minimal.
They have their own home-brewed internal lock and a manual safety, but neither need to be employed during normal operation.
Certainly a pistol worth considering.

Thanks...the one I am looking at has never been fired. It was bought from a guy that the dealer said "was a compulsive buyer" and never took his firearms out of the box!

I've always liked how the barrel rides low along the axis of the hand. Seems it would be very controllable and accurate.

I rate them very high but the triangle sights are really goofy and only good for close range. If they put normal sights on their guns I bet they would be a lot more popular.

I like those "goofy" triangle sights, they are very useful for me. "The sights themselves are drift-adjustable and come in the traditional three-dot pattern, which American shooters are used to—two white dots in the rear and one bright red dot on the front sight. This replaces Steyr’s standard triangle/trapezoid sights." (from Steyr Arms website).
By the way, Pistols? Are not indeed those firearms designed for close range?

My brother has a S9. Smaller pistol, same design. I had no trouble shooting it at 25 yards. I think it is a decent gun, nothing stood out to me as being particularly outstanding. I don't mind the triangular sight.

Common sense isn't so common.

I have my late wife's M9 and it is a great weapon. The very low bore axis gives minimal recoil and the big triangular sight is easy to pick up quickly.
