I ran across a Winchester 1894 carbine today, known as an Eastern carbine. What was the difference between an eastern carbine and the saddle ring carbine? Were the eastern's more rare? The one I saw today was pretty nice, in excellent condition in .30 WCF, has the Lyman tang sight. The guy wants $850 for it and it was made in 1928.

A true eastern carbine has a saddle ring type butt and sights, but no ring. Not to be confused with transitional carbines that have the SR butt and rear sight, no ring and a hooded ramp front sight. Transitionals are all in the 1,11X,XXX range.

I'll add that special order guns were made and there are some strange combos out there. A 1928 gun wouldn't normally be drilled for a receiver sight, it would be drilled for a tang sight.

This SRC is the same vintage as the Eastern Carbine you’re considering. It’s worth a lot more than $850.

Yes, the gun is probably worth more than $850 if it's in the shape as you described. As s&wchad states, the difference is mostly that the saddle ring and stud were not installed on these eastern carbines. And yes, there were a lot of options that Winchesters offered. Anything that was a factory option will increase the value of the rifle.
These Winchester Lever Carbines are great handling little rifles, I have a first year 30WCF SRC that I wouldn't take anything for.

Prices on them sure seem to vary! I was at a gun auction on Sat. and picked up a 1942 M94 in .32 Special with a williams receiver sight for $425 and I think I paid too much. Almost bought another one a bit older, all original for the same price. A couple of .38-55s went in the $800 range. I know condition and extra holes like my Williams sight make quite a difference.

Sven,
later 94's (like yours I suspect) had the receivers drilled for a sight and the Williams version didn't require drilling extra holes. Flatbands do not have the forward hole for a tang sight.

Prices in Minn must be cheaper than NC. This is my 1894 made in 1896. I gave $1200 for it last year and never looked back. Already been offered a sizable profit.
