Question Shotgun Shells but no pistol or rifle ammo?

Why do you think there is always Shotgun Shells on the shelves but no pistol or rifle ammo?

A lot of people can go through many rounds of handgun or rifle ammo in one sitting... Not many people I know will shoot many rounds with a shotgun in one sitting. I'm only good for about a dozen rounds.

I think it's because a handgun is easier to carry than a shotgun?
But I'd rather carry a shotgun. Trouble is, it always seems to cause a case of the vapors in some when it's being done?
Go figure!

I think maybe we've all got it wrong. We need more shotguns!

I've only got four here at my house. A Mossey 500, Winchester 97, Winchester 1500 and a Ruger over and under.

I noticed all the shot shells on the shelves at Wally World. Maybe we should all pick up a bunch of Mossey 500s and Rem 870s? They would sure work well in a "pinch"!

You guys bring up a good point. I'm not a shotgun guy, but I've recently bought three. Maybe it was my subconscious telling me to get them because ammo is available.

I think Chaz is onto something Mr. G!
I was at the pushers on Fathers Day and saw the new(ish) 870 Remington 12 Express with a screw in muzzle break on an 18" barrel. So all their screw in chokes could also be used. A couple were sporting their own ghost ring set up integrally as part of a receiver top rail mount. Tough to come up with something more capable of protecting home and hearth than a good 12!

Defensive shotgun ammo is harder to find, people have been hoarding it. Game loads and upper shelf birdshot are what is readily found.

People who like to kill the little clay birdies do indeed go through large quantities of shotgun shells in one city. Even casually popping them off (from a cheapy hand thrower), I used to shoot up three or four boxes of AA shells (which are lighter kicking). Get a recoil pad and learn how to hold your shotgun, a properly fit 12 gauge doesn't kick much more than a .30-06.

Gator, I totally agree.
I will burn up a case of shells with my coach gun at the range.
The wife has her older benelli 121M1 and she will do the same.
I have seriously thought about reloading shot shells... as I DO enjoy working out the double barrel thumper.

Did somebody mention the worlds greatest shotgun, the Winchester Model 1897? I have 6 of them and pick one up every chance I get. Can't beat the old "knuckle buster".

I agree, time for more shotguns. I have found myself doing more and more informal trap/skeet shooting since the post-election ammo shortage. Partly it's about ammo supplies, although I reload and am not really suffering any current shortage of either rifle or handgun ammo to shoot, but shotguns are fun and I've neglected them for the most part over the past several decades. Ammo is plentiful, and target loads are reasonably inexpensive, about $53 for a case of 250 which lasts me a while. I'm good for between 25-50 rounds per session. Lots of the trap guys, or sporting clay shooters, go through a lot of rounds in a day. Ouch.
