Need some web sites for knives. Auto folder

I'd like to get a automatic folding knife. Would like a nice one but does not have to be the best Benchmade or SOG. A nice knife at a reasonable price. Plus are there web sites where you do not need to be Military or LE to buy one?

Technically, you *do* have to be military or LE to obtain one that has travelled in interstate commerce. That's Federal law. (Residents of Oregon can buy all the Benchmades that they want, since they were made in Oregon.)

As a practical matter, many companies will sell you whereby ordering you "vouch" (honest and for true) that you're an authorized purchaser since the Feds don't actively pursue switchblade cases.

Check your state laws as to whether you can legally possess (or carry) one in your state.

If you don't want to muck about and take risks on quality, esp since you're not going to be able to get one serviced as a practical matter, then just go ahead and get a Benchmade.

So it has to do with interstate transport/commerce?? What, I have to ship to a FFL??
I can carry a gun but they will give a hard time over a knife?? I started reading the law on shipping and on concealed carry in my State and "glazed over" real quick.

Just get a good "assisted" open knife.. mine come out just as easy as an auto. Kershaw makes freakishly sharp ones that I enjoy.

Yes. The Feds banned auto opening knives back in the 50s, save for certain narrow exemptions. Blame "Rebel Without a Cause" and all the films that glorified kids in leather jackets with switch blades. They were the AKs of their era in terms of hostility.

Since the Federal government only has certain powers, they could only pass a law related to auto opening knives that moved in interstate commerce. Thus if you had a knife entirely made in your state, it'd be a non issue -if legal under state law. Unfortunately, Benchmades are made in Oregon, thus only those in Oregon can say that their knives didn't move in interestate commerce.

Lots of people have auto opening knives sitting around, but if you are not an authorized purchaser (military under narrow circumstances or LE), then ordering the knive involved causing it to be moved in interstate commerce. Thus one is now a criminal as per the Feds.

Even an FFL can't per se order and stock auto opening knives, unless those knives were purchased for resale to authorized individuals.

It's also verboten to ship them via common carrier (UPS, Fed Ex, etc) or mail them - save for to authorized purchasers.

Because of these various and sundry hassels, the makers of these knives will not service them unless one provides prove that they can legally have one. Thus Benchmade requires a LE, military ID, or Oregon ID before they'll repair one. (In Oregon you can buy one at the mall in Portland.)

Now a lot of guys post pictures of their Benchmades and what not who aren't using them in conjunction with their official duties. That's because the Feds have not been making enforcing the Switchblade Act of 1958 a major priority. However, since Customs has recently decided to try to go after even "assisted opening" knives, this suggests that a change may be brewing and it at least forms an "if they want you, they've got you" opening should you get into trouble for anything else.

I know nothing about shipping but carry is quite simple. Anyone can carry a common pocket knife in Florida. There are no specific prohibitions on auto-openers or switchblades that I have ever heard of.

However, since they are so easy to get, why not get a Florida CCW as it covers all concealed weapons. It will be nice to have if you encounter one of the many officers here who do not really understand the law.

I do have a CCW for some time. The problem seems to be getting the knife shipped across State lines unless I find one made in Florida.

One of the fairly well known custom makers in FL makes autos. I nearly bought one when I lived there, and, as mentioned, you can carry one with your concealed-weapon permit.

Sorry I don't remember the name, but at one time, he would take a table at a gun show. I think I ran across him in Pensacola.

You might also consider a simple locking-blade knife like a Spyderco. Properly carried, I can draw and open a Spyderco faster than I can an auto, at least right-handed. Cheaper, too.

If you mail it to yourself, then you've broken the law against mailing one as well as the law against transporting one across state lines. Fun stuff.

Of course there are a slew of Internet retailers that will just sell you an auto opener without any problems if you check a little box that says you're authorized to purchase. Shrug.

Simplest quasi legal way to get one is to have a friend who's Mil or LE order one and then "lose it" in your couch cushion.

I have two Camillius Heat "assisted opening" knives that are operated by you index finger instead of your thumb and they are just as fast as a switchblade with no chance of them opening in your pocket. Some of the laws against switchblades are very harsh and you might be traveling through a small town or area where the penalty includes a huge fine and/or jail time, so its not worth the risk to me.

I found this site in Florida. So I can "legally" buy from them. But then I have to pay sales tax. Just can't win.
