I'm gettin' me a Springfield Mil-Spec .45....
Looks like I'm going to be getting a new Springfield Mil-Spec .45ACP 1911. I've been wanting a full-size 1911 for a while now and a deal came along that I couldn't turn down. Will probably be a couple weeks before it's in, but that's OK.
Anybody willing to tell me how much they LOVE theirs and what a GREAT GUN I'm getting?
Post pictures if you want!

You are getting a GREAT 1911 !!!!! I have one that I bought to replace my Kimber. Its about 2 yrs old and has not had one problem !!!!! I paid $1100 for the Kimber,it jammed and had trouble feeding. Paid $600 for the Mil-Spec and its shoots anything I put in it! I wish I would have gotten the Springfield first, I would have bought two. You will LOVE it! PS The only thing I did to it was change the mainspring housing,to get rid of the lock.

I think you are getting a great pistol also. But have no experience with the Mil-Spec. I have the GI model like Foodfuzz, wanted a plain jane 1911. However my GI has a lanyard ring.
I love this gun but am not very good at shooting it, can't get used to the muzzle flip.
Have a blast, G-Mac!

Sringers
I've had several Springfield 1911's. I currently have an MC Operator that I refuse to part with. It's a tack-driver. I've had the Commander size in the GI .45; it was a great little gun. I only got rid of it because I had a chance to get a Colt Combat Commander and wanted to build it up as a project. I also have a Kimber Custom TLE/RL in stainless. I'm currently building a Colt Officer's ACP with a new Caspian stainless frame. I also have a Springfield Mil-Spec on order, but it's in a race with the the new Para USA GI Expert. I'm a bit hesitant about the GI Expert, but everything I raead on them says they are top notch. I handles one a couple of days ago, and it was nice in fit and finish. The only advantage the GI Expert has over the Springer is the front and rear sights are dovetailed and it comes with a Commander hammer, but wihtout a beavertail. We'll see which one gets here first (I'm still kinda rooting for the Springer).

OK, good...so it is possible to get rid of the lock on these.
Sounds like you guys like your Springfields.

Excellent choice, Gordy... as discussed.
Foodfuzz, I have the GI as well, and used Testor's model enamel in flat white to paint the front sight blade and put a TINY dot on each side of the rear notch. Made a tremendous difference in acquisition and dropped my IDPA times by a measurable amount.

Mainspring housing
So, how hard is it to change a mainspring housing?
I DEFINITELY want to get rid of the lock...don't have much use for a lanyard ring either.
I'd probably want a flat, checkered one.

I have changed the grips also to better grade diamond checkered. It has been a reliable and accurate semi-auto and I like it the way it is. I don't plan to do anything else to it. I didn't buy it as a project gun but just as an example of a military type .45 to shoot and enjoy.

Hey Bob- Those stocks look great! Can you tell me where you got them? I have my first 1911 waiting for me at a local shop and will be looking for some grips just like yours very soon.

It is not hard to remove the mainspring housing. It took me about 10 minutes to do mine and I never did it before. When you get your Springfield, look at the owners manual. It will show you how to remove the Mainspring Housing. Just remove it and slide the new no lock one in its place. It is very simple,If I can do it so can you! Best of Luck!
