Default Winchester Model 94 vintage?

Greetings, all:

Anyone know the approximate vintage of a 1.6 million serial Winchester Model 94?

Thanks, and Semper Fi.

Looks like 1948-49. How about a pic?

Guys, thanks for the quick replies. No pic, alas--the gun's at a local shop ($399), and I'm still debating about it. It's in decent shape, but not great. Definitely a shooter rather than a collector piece.

The metal's pretty good, no extraneous scope mount holes anywhere, and it functions fine. It's got blue wear on the high points, as you'd expect on a gun that's actually gone hunting. On the down side, it's missing the rear sight elevator, but the main drawback is the wood. The forend has a hairline crack on the right side, and both forend and buttstock look like they've been stripped and only half-@$$ refinished.

I can fix the wood problems easily enough, but four bills seems like a lot for what's essentially a truck gun that needs work. Still, it's a pre-'64, and would go well with the Model 12, Model 70, and dash-13 M1. So I'm torn. :-/

Thanks again, and Semper Fi.

Been there.
The wood is easy. Plenty around to replace it or strip it and TruOil it.
As long as the rifling is good and there are no other mechanical surprises I would say it's a "fair" price. On the other hand if you walked away you won't be kicking yourself. They did make millions.

Isn't it only the Model 70 bolt gun that was redesigned and cheapened in 1964? I understand that no other Winchester models have any significance as to production dates pre or post '64. Any authorities here?

jkc, wrong. The 94 suffered big time after 1964. First they went to some pins instead of screws etc. Later the recievers were some type alloy where they wont take a good blue. Winchester DID go cheapo in 1964 on model 70s etc too. They all worked okay, but visable shortcuts were taken.

yes, if I were to put any blood, sweat and tears into a project, a 1949 model '94 would be preferable to a post '64.

I had a '94,the word being had I just did not care for how it rattled like a bucket of old bolts whenever I shook it so I traded it off.

Now my replica 1873? um,this thing is bulit like a tank! and for what I want a .357 carbine to do it's fine.

I just like the '73 action over the later ones
