Rifle Scope
I am looking for a Scope for my Remington 700 .308, I have looked at Barska and Millet brands and they look pretty good. I would like to keep the price under $450. Does anyone use a Barska or Millet scope? What do you think of them? What do you use on your rifle? Thanks

My opinion of the Barska is very low. Optical quality poor. When you look at an object 100 yards or more away it will appear mushy and unclear. Not an inducement to accuracy. Millet is better, and acceptable for a short distance scope and occasional use. If you plan to shoot at distances greater than 100 yards, and and/or small targets you may wish for a little better quality. If you plan to do a lot of shooting at distances, such as Prairie Dog shooting, you need to look at better optics, such as Nikon, Leupold, Burris. If you want the best, look at Schmidt Bender, Ziess, Swarosky, but the price just went way up. If possible look through representative examples at distant targets. Especially on a hot day with mirage.

I have a Leupold VX-I 3-9x40mm on my Ruger m77 in .30-06.
Basic, no frills, Leupold quality/lifetime warranty from an American company. It gets it done for me.
I paid $219 at Bass Pro a few years ago.

Leupold M8, Vari-x 2, or vari-x 3 are the best scopes for the money in my opinion. The no questions asked lifetime warranty is nice as well.

Scopesnmore.com has Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8X scopes for $359, and that is an extremely high quality scope that will hold its value well and give you a lifetime of excellent service.

I am a believer on getting the most power that you can afford.
On a high power rifle, you want a scope that will get you the target at range.
With the price you mentioned, check out the Burris fullfield in the 6-24.
I have seen them new for about 400 to 450.00, but I have not checked lately.
We have a Millet, it is alright, for the price not bad.

I can't speak for tactical scopes, but it doesn't get better than Nikon.

I agree with Greg. The Leupold Vari-X line is Top Drawer. I use a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5 - 14 x 40 on top of a Browning X-Bolt in 270 Win and have made shots up to 400 yards on whitetail deer. An added plus with the Leupold is their No Questions Asked Lifetime Warranty. Their warranty even applies if you are not the original owner, something VERY few companies offer these days. One thing to keep an eye out for is shown on the Leupold's web page. It seems there have been some counterfit Leupold scopes coming in from PRC. Leupold || Counterfeit Warning This gives all the details.

I like the Weaver "T" series... crisp clear optics and very repeatable adjustments.

I don't know what you use the rifle for. Cheapest that works (usually) would probably be a Burris. Decent scope for the money. I've got one. It was pretty cheap and I got a free GPS unit thrown in with it. Try Natchez for bundles if that is what you want.
If you're building a tactical precision rifle, the cheapest scopes that garner good reviews are the SWFA "Super Sniper" series.

My favorite all-around scope is a Leupold VXII 2x7. I have used this on 22's to 375 HH. Another sleeper in the used catagory is an old Weaver Steel V4.5. It is a 1.5x4.5 variable. I use a couple on deer/elk rifles. In its day, it was THE dangerous game scope, now replaced by Leupold 1.5x5 and others.
I'm going to by a Simmons Prohunter someday with the new reticle adjust system. I'm hearing a lot of good things about it locally. I also own a Burris mini 6x, for a Ruger 308. Works very well and is very small. Lots of good choices out there.
Leupold TAT is very good. My friend Dick just sent two scopes for check-ups, reticle exchange. The scopes were done in a week. Not bad. Nikon monarch's are very good glass. For me the eye relief could have been longer. I had one on a light .338 and got bit. I learned a lot about scopes that day.

The last scope I bought was a couple of years ago, a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40. Not all that expensive, as I recall. Crisp image edge to edge, holds zero well, and box-adjusts back to zero perfectly. Here mounted on my pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06. They make better scopes today than years ago, but I'm not all that sure about the rifles. This one was made in 1949 and is still a tackdriver.

I have the same on my newer Win M70 .270, still tackdrivers. New scope is $150-200.

Check out SWFA
SWFA Riflescopes
They have the best prices on optics around. They also have a house brand called "Super Sniper" that I have heard good things about and are priced really reasonably.

I have a few Leupold scopes, never had a problem with any of them. Just figure out how far you want to shoot and get a VX-II in the objective diameter that you want. I think the 3X9 40mm is a good general hunting scope for the .308

Take a look at the Bushnell Elite 3200 or 4200 series scopes. I find they are the best in their respective price ranges. They also have a great warranty..........although I've never had to send one back.

With a budget of $450 you can certainly find a quality scope. I'll echo what other have said about the various Leupold VX2's, VX3's, Burris and the Zeiss Conquest. I have numerous Leupold's, several Burris and one Zeiss Conquest, all quality optics and will serve you will. For a big game rifle, probably my favorite all around scope is the VX3 2.5-5X36, it is small, light weight, and can go down to give you a large field of view and 8X is plenty of magnification for game at any reasonable range.
