Hollow rifle stock
I recently installed a synthetic stock on my M1 Garand Tanker. It fits fine, but the stock is hollow and I've been thinking of filling it in. So far, I've come up with the following ideas:
RTV Silicone caulk
Great Stuff expandable insulating foam
Styrofoam "peanuts"
Any suggestions?

Why do you want to fill the stock? Of the materials you mentioned, I think the expanding foam would be the one I would stay away from as you have to be careful not to over-fill, and if you do, you risk splitting your stock. Caulk might work, but it will probably be a messy install. Styrofoam peanuts - it would depend on why you are wanting to fill the stock. Are you trying to make it a floater in case it falls into water? Are you trying to get a more solid feel from the stock? Are you trying to move the balance point?
Regards,
Dave

If you decide to use the expanding foam, check the type of foam you use, as there are several varieties out there from minimal expanding to ones that expand a lot, with increasing pressure on the surrounding surfaces.

I used the expanding foam on a very hollow sounding Remington 870 Mag Synthetic 12 Ga. butt stock twice. The first time I used the Maximum expanding foam and replaced the recoil pad right after filling trying to keep in as much of the foam as I could. I warped/bulged the butt stock at the junction of the stock and recoil pad. After letting the stuff cure I dug it out with a screwdriver and replaced the stock. The second time I used the foam I used the MINIMUM expanding foam, left the recoil pad off for a few hours, cut the foam off level just below the heel & toe of the butt stock and reinstalled the pad. No problems, and the stuff has been in there for about 12 years.

Fill it with #9 shot. Gives it a great solid feel.

If you go with the expanding foam, simply do it is small multiple stages. It may take a couple nights, but will do the trick.

See if any of the Mercury filled recoil reducer's will fit the opening.
I like the shot angle, it can be poured out instead of having to be excavated for removal. As long as weight isn't a consideration?
All that aside, Tanker Garand's are slicker than snot on a door knob!
You lucky dog!

Thanks for everyone's input. I installed the synthetic stock to cut down on the weight. It has a hollow sound when hit by the sling fitting. I want to keep the weight down, but give it a more solid feel. The minimally expanding foam seems to be the way I'll go. I hadn't thought of the shock absorbing part and will definitely take that into consideration.
Thanks again.
