Why, I aughta.....

This is a very old thread. It predates S&W model numbers.

I have 4 that I like each for a specific reason, a K-22 Masterpiece, The old 3 Screw Ruger in 4 5/8" that was my Dad's, the 1949 HS I got from my uncle and an Astra Constable.

The Astra is like a PPK sort of and makes a good knock around kit gun and is accurate. The HS is great for plinking. The Ruger is for letting grandkids shoot and I have used it to start many folks in handgun training. The K-22 is just super for all the above and more. It is very accurate and is my go to gun for armadillos.

My favorite is my kimber 1911 w/.22 upper but that thing is a picky eater and with the difficulties finding ammo it just sits. This winter I am shooting bullseye with a 617-1 and it turns out I like it

I'm down to only one .22 handgun: a fixed sight, 5-1/2" Ruger New Model Single Six. It's a fun plinker, and it comes in handy for rodent and nuisance pigeon control in the barn.

The Ruger is always a fun plinker.



The Victor is new to me, a 1971 Hamden gun. Basically a new gun that has sat for a long time unused. Had some trouble with the trigger on the first shoot, so it's with the LGS getting a tune up. The other two 107's I've had for a while. Older High Standards are my favorite 22's.

My favorite right now is a birth year/month S&W 17, no dash. I also have a 6" Ruger Mk1 that I gave my dad for Christmas and mom gave back to me after he died. However at the risk of being tarred and feathered the 22 pistol I own that gets the most range time is an old stainless Taurus 94.

I picked up a Ruger SR22 based on reviews I read on line which I've been trying hard to learn to like.

I like the old High Standards too




but sometimes I get nostalgic

While I love and collect .22 LR revolvers, my favorite .22's are Ruger MKII/MKIII's with this 4.5 inch stainless MKIII Hunter just edging the 6 7/8ths inch MKII Target on most days- though the MKII is a tiny bit more accurate.

When I got it I got into a verbal confrontation with the salesman as I wanted a 4" ordered and was told my gun was in. He told me some nonsense about seeing me shoot and knowing I cared about accuracy and some such foolishness. Begrudgingly, I took it home, and it's still working perfectly over 15 years later.


It's still ugly...and too long...

My favorite for just knocking around in the woods or a casual range trip is this Taurus 990. It eats any ammo and has proven to be 100% reliable

Browning Medalist

I have lots of .22 handguns. They don't get out much these days with the .22 ammo shortage, but my favorite is my K22.



Followed closely by this non-S&W

Number one, my Model 317, is a great plinker and when loaded with shot gives good snake protection in the desert.

Number two, a High Standard Supermatic, Model S-101, is a sentimental favorite. It was my first target pistol and taught me to shoot a pistol. I regret selling the one I had and it took almost 40 years to find a replacement.

However my favorite has to be this Model 41 which I bought new around 1960. It's serial number 9981; still with the box and most of the acessories, including the weight set, and an aftermarket gadget for cleaning the lead out of the muzzle brake.

Mine is a pre model 17, The good folks here tell me it was made in 1955.

My favorite 22 is my Colt Challenger. Grip angle is perfect and the trigger is very smooth. Cannot beat an old Colt!

Of course my pre war S&W 22-32 Target. I've owned 7 or 8 thru the years. Along with my first 22 pistol. A Stevens single shot break open Model 36 I think.Anyway it was a rabbit, quail, snake & camp meat gun for us kids. 14 or 15 YO I think.Later came the Rugers, Colts, H&R's, Iver Johnsons, etc. All served their purpose. I remember reading an article in True Magazine years ago by Russell Annabel about the 22 pistol in Alaska. Real interesting.

My 1st 22 was a High-Standard Sport King with the interchangable barrels. I still have it some 50 + years later and it makes an occasional trip to the range. The one that gets the most use these days is my Browning Buck Mark since it's very accurate and dependable. The one that gets the least use is a Chiappa 22 that's really only good as a door stop. I sent it back once due to reliability problems and it came back the same way.
I had a Star Model FS that I tried to wear out for over 20 years. I bought it used so I don't know how many rounds had been through it. I put at least 20,000 through it myself. I gave it to my daughter to use with the grandkids.
22s are still great fun to shoot and I believe ammo with come back down to reasonable prices soon.

in the box that I believe is unfired

I love rimfire handguns. I learnt pistol craft with an old Colt OMM and enjoy my 1961 vintage OMM.



I have this K-22 since a few decades and consider it to be as accurate as any rimfire handgun can be.



The Swiss-made Hämmerli 212 is very high quality and anyone who has shot it, is amazed by its trigger.




The Hämmerli International 208. I used to shoot one in ISSF pistol matches in my younger years.




I have five rimfire Korths, the three newer ones towards the bottom of the picture are all excellent shooters.




How could I choose just one? That would be unfair to the other fine guns - and I did not even mention my two Ruger MkIIs and my S&W 22A so far...

My 1954 Ruger Mk1 (Standard) so far ...

These two OMM .22s are great shooters and they lock up like a bank vault

All I can say is; Ruger MkII standard. By far.

The ruger sr 22 pistol has been one of my favorites.

Have a Ruger 22/45 with a red dot sight that is so accurate it's boring to shoot. Right now my favorite is my E series frame with a Kimber .22 conversion sitting on it. I had a 41 years ago that I let get away. I'd like to have another some day.

Owned all the J, K, and L frame S&W .22 LR revolvers, in every barrel length. Ditto for the Ruger Mk II's. Owned a couple of Colt .22 revolvers, a ****** Taurus, a Beretta 87, and a couple of pocket semi's.

But the one I've kept and shot the most is my CZ Kadet.

My favorite; a Mod. 46 that I bought in 1966. Many, many rounds down range with this gun. Sent it to the custom shop a few years ago for a well deserved refinish and mechanical overhaul; best $300 I have spent recently. Also, I enjoy my Mod. 18 and 17-2

Today I added this 34-1 4" 938xx and this is confusing things.




Before that I thought it was the Nickel 34-1 snubnose b/c it looked so good.



or the 35-1 for the same reason. Plus I like the trigger shoe on it.



Then you throw these guys into the mix.



I love my High Standard.



And for reaching out there is the model 17 6"



Get back to me in about a year. Maybe then I could say which is my favorite. I am glad I have some ammo.

They are all great.

It depends if it is just me than it is the 6" 617-2. If my daughters are with me then the 617 is still there, but they have there 5" 63-4, and 3" 63-5. And if all goes well then I will trade my 17-4 for an 18-4 with 3 T's in November and I see it going to the range a good bit too.

I've owned 3 .22s, a Beretta Model 71 and two Rugers, a bull barrelled Mk.II and a 6.5" Single Six convertible. I've also used many a .22. My favourite is the Beretta M71. Hit .22 silhoutte targets at 65m easily, easier than the Rugers with longer barrels and sight radii.

My all time favorite was this Ruger mark II that I gave my son a few years ago as it was more accurate then Both the 1968 S&W Model 41 with 7 1/2 inch barrel and factory muzzle brake and the later 5.5 inch Model 41 with heavy barrel.

My current favorite is my Model 17-4 8 3/8 inch barrel that shoots like a rifle.

My 17's are nice field guns, but for pure target shooting at the range my (single) M41 or any of my Citations or Victors are really hard to beat.

I only have a couple of .22 handguns at the moment but one that I love to shoot is my High Standard Duramatic 101.

It's easy to rack, light trigger and insanely accurate.

The Duramatic was the least-expensive pistol in the HS lineup but for me, it's an absolute joy to shoot and very reliable.

Several Ruger 22/45 pistols in my safe, they work well for me.

I posted in this thread back in 2009 that my M 41 was my favorite, followed by a (then) recently acquired 617-6 6". In the past 5 years my opinion probably hasn't changed, I still love the 41, but also find the 617 to be a fine shooting gun.



But.....that may change. On a very recent trip to another part of the state, I wandered into a shop to browse, and walked out with another 617-6, but this one a 4". I took it out today for it's first shooting, and was delighted at the almost zen-like balance of the gun. The 6" has always seemed a little cumbersome and muzzle-heavy. I had an 18 back in the '70s and really liked it a lot, but sadly sold it many years ago. The new 4" 617 handles very well and may end up becoming my favorite, plus I've been tilting back toward revolvers. I grew up being a revolver guy, inherited that preference from my dad who thought semi-autos were garbage, but in the '80s I got into IPSC shooting and switched over. But when my IPSC days were done I shot IDPA using both semis and revolvers (SSR class shooting a 66 4") and also acquired an early 500 and got interested in hunting and playing with that, and in the last decade I've switched back to a strong preference for revolver shooting. So, the new 617 fits right in. Here's a pic of the brace:



Only thing I don't like about the new guy are the Goodyear grips. I'll find something nice in wood to replace those, perhaps some nice Ahrends.....

Well by adding the 617; that takes away from the period.

On the forum posts, maybe. With those fine guns you can still shine at the gun range.

My one line K-22 is one of the most accurate ones I own. I won a gun broker auction Thursday nite and will get a Korth .22 late this week. That will be an interesting gun to shoot, Larry

My favorite .22 handgun is a three way. My S&W M-18, my S&W M-34 two inch, and my Walther PP. Each gets its turn depending on what I am doing. My 34 is actually my second one. I pretty much wore the first one out then sold it when I got my S&W M-650 with both cylinders. I sold that one later in a fit of stupidity. Immediately went in search of another M-34.
