If you have a .45 ACP and .44 Mag is there a need for a .45 Colt?

Not that I have ever noticed.
To each his own. Some folks love 'em. I never found the need to own one.

There certainly is a need for it, especially if you are a reloader. I mean, why not have another great caliber to reload for? And when did "need" have anything to do with buying guns?

Beat me to it!
Do you mean is there a niche that the .45 Colt fills that isn't covered by the other 2? If so then the answer is no.
The same question could be asked of almost any cartridge. Except for competition and "needing" a gun that fits the rules "need" isn't an issue. If you have a 12 ga. do you "need" a 20? If you have a .30-06 do you "need" a .30-30?
If you have a .22 handgun and rifle, a .30-06, a 12 ga. and a large bore handgun you have pretty well covered the "need" spectrum and it is all "want" from there on.

Honestly, if I had a 44 mag I would have never bought this 45 Colt.
I am glad I didn't (and still don't) have the 44 mag. This 45 Colt will do all I need in a big bore pistol.
Besides I have the other .4 something mag, the 41 and between the .41 and the 45 Colt I don't think I will ever "need" a 44 mag.

Of course you need a .45 Colt. Everybody needs a .45 Colt. Without one you're missing out on some great shooting and a great cartridge.

For me, it's just a grand old cartridge that has to be had. Best shot out of SAA pistolas! It's kind of like the 45-70. One should really experience it.

How do you define "need"?
If you don't have one, then you "need" one. At least that's the way the firearms side of my brain works. Explains my rambling collection as well.
I've got the .41 magnum, .45 acp, .44 special, 44 magnum, .45 Colt... did I miss any?

Sir, some would argue that if you have a .45 Colt, you don't need a .45 ACP or .44 mag.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

It depends. If you want to shoot BP reloads, then the .45 Colt, in SAA or clone guise, will work better than a modern DA revolver.
If you buy a Ruger revolver (not a S&W), you can use very stout .45 Colt loads. However, you might be better served to simply go to the .454 or .460 and be done with it (and use .45 Colt as a subload) if you want performance above .44 mag levels. Or just use a rifle.

Well, IMHO I need a 41 Mag and a 460.
The 460 will handle the 45 Colt and the 41 fills the void between the .357 and the 44.
But that is just MHO.

I know that John Linebaugh had some pretty warm loads that he used/uses in a model 25-5 or at least that he mentioned in an article online:

I agree the .45 Colt is the orginal and the others are niche cartridges.

There are two things in life . 1 Nice and 2. Necessary. When we are born, we have a disease for which there is no cure. This disease is called "I Want" We all want nice things that are not really necessary. We all have things that are not really necessasry. Life would not be very much fun if all we had was necessary only items. If you have the money and it won't keep you from getting things that a necessary, then get what you want. If you can afford a 45 LC, make yourself happy.

Yogi Berra would say:
" It's the one that you need to have. If you don't have it, that's why you need it!"
That should clear things up.

Personally I actually prefer the 44 mag and the 45 acp. They do all I need to get done in big bores. I am down to one 45 Colt, which is a convertible Blackhawk. The acp cylinder stays in it almost always. I bet the Colt cylinder has not had 300 rounds through it.
I could be perfectly content with handguns only in .22lr, 44 magnum and 45 acp.
Blasphemy I know, but the older I get the more I am inclined to simplify things.

Oh yeah, every real man needs a 45 Colt.
The 44 Mag is good for many things, loaded up or down, and the 45 ACP is a nice little cartridge if you need a loaner for girlfriends, wives and small children.
The real trick is deciding why you need a 44 Special after you have all of those.

Have you checked your temperature lately?
Are you sick?
Running a fever?
Thirsty?
Cold chills running down your spine?
If any or none of the above are encountered, I recommend buying a .45 Colt.

I haven't "needed" the last 50 or so guns I bought, but what has Need to do with acquisition of S&W's?

Actually, I have .45s, both ACP & Colt, so I have no need for a 44.
All a man really needs is a Smith .45 ACP sixgun, everything else is fluff.

Why yes, of course there is. A man also needs at least one good 44 Special to go with those 44 Magnums, 45 ACPs, and that 45 Colt.

Most guns that I buy are for the pleasure of shooting. There is a lot more variety of pleasure available to me from different calibers of guns than there are other pleasures in life.
I have a Vaquero with both 45 colt and 45 ACP cylinders. I shoot better with the 45 Colt in it.
I also have a Redhawk 454 with a scope on it. I shoot better with it shooting 45 Colt at ranges 50 yds or less and I shoot better with 454's at longer ranges.
My 460 shoots 300 gr 454's with less recoil than the Redhawk and is very accurate with them.
My point here is that guns that shoot more than one caliber give you more variety and pleasure.
There are more calibers available that also shoot the 45 Colt.

I have 2-45 semi autos, 3-44 mags and 1-45colt with the extra acp cylinder so I guess I have 3 acp's total. Guess I need another 45colt or two to even it out.
Need is never a factor, wants are what it is about.

Do you NEED a cartridge that was developed for the Army with the mandate to penetrate a horse and kill the man hiding behind it at 100 yards?
I think you know the answer.
Besides, if you reload and use cast 255g SWC and Unique, load 8g you get 800fps, 8.5g and you get 850fps, 9g gives you 900fps, and so on. Pretty nifty, eh?
Remember, the .45Colt does this w/o being a magnum.

I don't NEED 90% of what I have. I love the "feel" of 45LC while shooting it. It's a pleasant experience to me. Of course that goes for everything I shoot

I think it should be mandatory that every American own at least two 45colt revolvers, one for each hand. Why? Because they are so darn sweet to shoot, and put such a nice big hole in whatever you point them at. 45acp is nice in a revolver, but 45colt is glorious. The recoil is pleasant, the report is not overly loud or sharp, the available range of loads is broad, and they are so darn sweet to shoot, (wait, I already said that).
I respect every mainstream cartridge from 17hmr thru 500s&w, and can understand the purpose and appeal of each. That being said, the two closest contenders for the 45colt throne are the 45acp and the 44special. The 41mag and the 44mag are great, but don't try shooting them without hearing protection while hunting or you may as well shove a knitting needle in your ear. Plus, the larger magnum cartridges have a tendency to rattle loose Smith revolvers unless you shoot lower power loads the majority of the time. If you have to shoot a lower power load, it ain't a magnum, and you just went down to 44special or 41 special.
I don't own a 44special, but enjoy the cartridge. It would be truely great if it came in 45 cal. (hardy har har). The 45acp is a beautiful thing in a revolver, and moon clips reload faster than anything, but I hate walking in the woods with a pocket full of loaded moon clips, (like walking around with a spare can of vienna sausages in your pocket) and half moon clips are only half as good. The only thing I like about semi-autos is that the slim single stack clip is a beautiful shell holder for you pocket. Give me a 45colt, a pocket of loose shells, and a crisp autumn morning, and I am happier than a bear in a beehive. Another thing I dislike about the 45acp revolver is the huge jump to the barrel forcing cone that the bullet has to make. I'd like to see a 45acp revolver with a frame sized to accept a 45acp cylinder that is sized to accept 45acp shells without the mile wide jump. I know the 45colt fills this gap with largely empty case area, but at least the shells look right for the gun, and they're nice and big and purty.
I like the 45colt and the 45-70. Both have more than 100 years of proven dependability, and both do the job without a lot of shock and awe. I used to like shock and awe, but now I can't hear and my carpal tunnels are the size of a pinhole. Give me a big, slow moving hunk of lead, any day.
I have to go try to buy another 45colt. Thanks for indulging me.
