and now I come into a thread in the middle instead of at the begining?

Is there any way I can loose the advertising bar on the left side of my screen? All suggestions so far have just lowered the size of my font? What's wrong here, never used to be this way.

Well I contributed some years back but, that's OK, I'll just stay away. Too many changes to suit me.
