There's nothing wrong with letting folks know that contributing gets them out of ads and then letting them make decisions for themselves, but the above post (and others like it of late) strays into muscling and guilt-tripping; it's no one's place to do that on this issue.

I understand how it works, and don't begrudge reminders of the perks of contributing or that this forum doesn't run itself.
I don't mind the ads, I don't run adblockers, and don't have any problem with Dave, who I think does a great job.
I did take exception to one remark that I think sends a lousy "be a commodity for us or go" message to the membership that when questioned he confirmed.
That's not my understanding of this forum's spirit at all.
No, I wouldn't finance a hobby for an unlimited number of people who wanted me to provide a freebie for them, but this analogy isn't apt -- the forum is freely offered. Nothing in the terms of service said members must donate or turn off ad blockers. If that needs to be changed, fine, but until then reducing members who are simply enjoying this site on the terms you set to "people wanting a freebie" is way off the mark.

I assumed you ran one. The 'passive receptacle' comment probably gave me that idea.

Exception already noted when I said I'd phrase it differently.
Maybe I'd say "Please drop a quarter in the can every day you drink the coffee." If there are never any quarters, I won't be enthused about making the coffee with my grounds.

You're right- we don't tell people they must turn off ad blockers and not deprive us of the penny or two we'll make off them this week or month.
A kid tried to take my wallet out of my pocket once.
It was my fault.
I wasn't wearing the sign which said "Please don't steal my wallet."
Maybe we should offer free cell phones to those who run ad blockers.
I hear they're running some real deals on Samsungs.
I'm done with this remark discussion.
I hope you can get over it.

Support for the Forum
What the Admin handejector states makes a lot of sense, at least to me. I have been on the forum for several years (oops, maybe more than a few years, since 2007, time passing quickly when you are having fun) and have not only derived much enjoyment from the forum, but have made some friends, and the information that has been posted has saved me hundreds of dollars over the years, and in one case I made a contact through the forum that allowed me to acquire a firearm that I had been looking for for many years. So I think the forum is great and that the admins do an excellent job of keeping things on track in a civil manner, which I think is probably a challenge given the volume of posts.
I personally shoot pretty much just 9mm and for about the cost a box of ammo I can become a supporter of the forum just seems, at least to me, to be the right thing to do, just sayin' my $ .02.

Understandable but mistaken assumption; I included that phrase on my own assumption that that's what most folks running adblockers want to avoid being.

Fair as fair can be.

I'm hoping this bit goes with the smiley below and you're not actually equating normal forum use with pick-pocketing.

That's a smokin' good offer.

Can and will. I greatly enjoy the forum and have gotten much from it; tried to give back, too, in terms of time, knowledge, considered responses, spare parts to those in need freely shared, and money to those fallen on hard times that the forum was good to alert us all to. I'll admit having long meant to send a contribution and letting it slip down the list of things to do that often get undeserved short shrift because of so much that demands immediate attention.
But I'm also sorry to perceive what seems a top-down change in ethos from what I earlier called "the forum's purpose and worth of its members", and a related rise in finger-wagging and clique-ishness.
And I know it's your house, and I'm know what amounts to a hill of beans, too, so I'll follow your lead in also being done with this remark discussion.

Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. I'm not sure how a statement on an anonymous internet forum could be considered "muscling." And if you feel guilty, that's not my fault. I didn't tell you how you should feel . . .
