What is the purpose of the default rectangle just beneath our avators?

It's the little white rectangle directly under the right shoulder of your gorilla avator.
When you hover the mouse arrow over the rectangle the word "default" appears.

That's the post icon. You can select one when you start a thread or post a reply. The various icon options are below the message window. If you don't select one, it defaults to that "white rectangle", which is suppose to look like a document (script?).
I selected the "lightbulb" icon for this reply.
I also edited your original post (above) and selected the "question" icon.

I selected the "exclamation" icon for this reply, so you better pay attention!
If it makes sense now, gimme a "thumbs up" icon in your next reply.
