Picture orienttion
There are times when posting pictures my image shows up rotated 90º left. I have not figured out how to rotate it upright. I'd appreciate your assistance in correcting this.
Typical example: see below
Thanks!

Were you on your second bottle of that when you took the pic?
I just downloaded your pic, used the preview window on my laptop and rotated the pic 90º. Let me see if it posts correctly now.

Posting pictures taken with cell phones seems to be a **** shoot. While there must be a reason, I don't know what it is. However as muddocktor pointed out, you can use various programs/apps to turn them 90 degrees and re-post them.
Someday, maybe forum software will enable users to do this during the posting process. Any developers out there listening?

Here's the problem I am encountering....... my computer has the picture oriented in the correct way but when I upload it to S&W Forum it somehow turns. Is there a way to rotate it on the S&W Forum since it already is correct on my computer?? MD: I've tried what you stated a few times and STILL comes out rotated 90º. I guess when my more computer savvy Son gets here to visit Friday I will ask him to show me what I am doing wrong. BTW this usually occurs when I tale the picture in vertical mode with my iPhone.

Chief, the file itself needs to have the rotation in it. In other words, if you are viewing the picture in a program/app and program/app lets you rotate it to view, it will not change how the picture is displayed unless the program/app allows you to save the change either in the existing file or a new one. I hope that's clear - and not like mud!
For example, in Windows Explorer, you can left click on the picture's file name and a drop down box appears that includes the choice to rotate the picture 90 degrees right or left. Doing so actually changes the picture file so the next time it's opened, it will be viewed however you changed it. Same thing applies for any photo editing software - you can change the orientation then save it, and it will always look the way it was when you saved.
On the other hand, if you open the picture in a viewer and then rotate it, unless the viewer offers you the ability to save the change, nothing will change and the next time you open the picture, it will look the same as before.

I kind of get what you are saying, however the picture taken is already in the upright orientation when taken and viewed on my computer. It only rotates when posted HERE on the Forum (it's perfectly fine when I post every where else) if I take the photo in the vertical mode with my iPhone. If I purposely turn it 90º on my photo album and save it, it STILL comes out cockeyed here! Obviously I'm doing something wrong but have no idea what. I'm fairly good figuring things out on a computer but this one has me completely stumped.
Tom, just tried again (rotated and saved it on my computer so it's actually wrong to me ) and it came out here cockeyed the other direction (90º to right this time). Will have to wait for my Son to have a look and see what I'm doing incorrectly. Thank you for your effort! I believe it has to do with the photo album file I have on my computer. Maybe I need to put it into another kind of file.......

Tom, I figured it out! I was posting pictures directly from "Photos" automatically transferred from my iPhone to my Mac. I need to FIRST put them into another photo album and then what you said works perfectly! Just tested it and it does not even need to be rotated as it is already in the correct orientation. I did not realize that I had to move them into separate files once they were automatically transferred placed on the Mac.
Once again - thanks!

I STILL don't quite get why is will not post correctly directly from the transferred file, but at this point I don't even care - as long as I can do it properly now!

chief38, maybe that is just some quirk of a Mac OS. Windows doesn't give me any problems such as that. Not knocking Mac BTW. It's just another OS and neither Mac or Windows is the end all and be all of the computer world. It's been a long time since I messed with a Mac based system.

My Son is here for a few days and he explained it to me. When the pic's are auto-uploaded from my iPhone to my iMac they go into sort of a "cloud" file. That cloud file orients pic's a certain way and they must be transferred into a regular photo file to be adjusted to your liking. Don't really get all that tech stuff but now at least I can get pictures uploaded to this Forum in the correct orientation.
Not a big deal to do - I just never knew I had to do this for vertically taken iPhone pic's. Ya learn something new every day!
