Spotted this S.D. Myres "Detective Wonder" on a gun show table today while dodging Jerky. Seller didn’t know anything about it, “but it can be yours for $20!”

Thanks to the forum, I knew what it was. I still don’t know what it’s worth, but it fit’s a Colt DS perfectly. It looks like flower power Bob personalized it, but I figure I still didn't get took too bad. Thank you turnerriver!

It's designed to be worn on a belt, with the gun positioned similar to a shoulder holster. It works on a bath robe too... sort of.

Pretty cool Chad! How secure is it (the gun)?
If you are doing jumping jacks or running down a starircase of a burning building, is the butt going to pop out and then the gun is on the floor?
Don't get me wrong, I like it....................but wondering if it is rare and unusual because it wasn't marketed very long {due to failure}??

I gotta get me one of those things for my bathrobe also, cool gadget

I'm thinkin' Chad has it wrong. It is a IWB holster for men's pajama bottoms. Don't ask me how you grab the gun from the front...

Interesting design. It looks like the gun would either fall out when you least expected it or you would end up with your belt around your neck trying to draw it.

It seems secure. I didn’t want to light the house on fire and hurt myself, so I shook it over the bed instead. You have to pull the butt forward to draw and it‘s a good fit. The downside I see is that you can‘t get your hand around the grip until it‘s clear of the bottom pocket. If you weren’t careful and deliberate it’d be easy to fumble, but then cut-away trigger guards aren’t exactly up to OSHA standards either. I imagine it would print under a tee shirt, but most folks wouldn’t notice because of the Lucky Strike pack rolled in the sleeve.

What a great historical artifact. The holster looks fantastically awkward to carry and use, and doesn't appear to offer any real concealment advantage, especially for such a small revolver.

Thank You! You're absolutely right, it does look awkward. Ed McGivern and Rex Applegate reputedly used this type of holster, so there must have been something to it. I don’t plan on carrying it, but that’s not why I bought it. I got my monies worth already just in fun and it‘s a wonderful period display piece that should peak peoples curiosity.

Thanks for the links. Your holster is definitely a great find and a thought provoking item.

I took a look at my copy of Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting this evening, hoping to find a picture of Ed McGivern wearing one of these holsters. Unfortunately, I didn't find one. It may be there and I just didn't notice.

As far as I could tell, all of the holsters Ed McGivern used in the book gave the hand full access to the butt of the revolver during the draw, unlike your Myres holster. I'm certain that Ed McGivern would be able to quickly and smoothly draw from your Myres holster, but given his tremendous skill with revolvers, I think he would have been able to work well with most any contraption.

I did notice that Ed McGivern included cut away trigger guards in his chapter on Mutilating Handguns. He didn't seem to favor this modification.

Here's a catalog cut showing how the Detective Wonder was worn.This holster was only cataloged for a short time.Like FT,I've only seen 2 before.

Since the holster remained in the catalog for only a short time, I assume that it didn't sell. Are you aware of any other makers who offered something similar?

$5 doesn't seem like a lot to ask for the Detective Wonder, but what were the prices for more conventional holsters in the same catalog?

Here's a photo that includes Ed McGivern's Detective Wonder. It was passed on to my father by Peggy Groff. Rex Applegate borrowed it from my father for a time and had some duplicates of it made from "modern materials" for his own use.

This is one of about 15 pieces of McGivern's leather that I'll unfortunately be giving up for auction at Amoskeag later this month along with several of his handguns.

What a great find!
I'm a sucker for old holsters, particularly for innovative and before-their-time designs. And if it has "Myres" on it, then it's well worth buying.
