You Can't Put a Price on a Good Holster

I work at a gun shop and tell people this every day! I see it in person and hear, "That's too expensive, I'll just put it in my waistband". I'm going to print out, laminate, and post this article on the counter 1st thing tomorrow morning!

The man's handgun, which was in the waistband of his pants, went off at about 12:30 p.m. **” an apparent "accidental discharge," according to Shannon Sessions, a Lynnwood police spokeswoman.

"It made a loud noise and scared a lot of people in the store," Sessions said. "I believe he shot himself in the testicles and he also had some injuries to his leg and foot. He was obviously in shock."

Nobody else was hurt and no one appeared to be with the man, she said.

Police and fire responded, and the man was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle before police had a chance to interview him extensively. Sessions had no further details about the man.

Lynnwood police are continuing to investigate but "at this point it does look like it's accidental," Sessions said. A manager at Lowe's said store personnel are not commenting on the incident.

What caliber weapon?

Type of weapon. Glop?

Type of ammo. JHP? SWC? Ball?

Sorry. That one was too easy.

A lot of people have shot themselves in the leg or armpits placing a gun in or removing one from a holster.

Bet more have shot themselves in theleg using a holster than have shot themselves in the testicles not using a holster.

You're probably right but only be because most who carry a firearm use a holster.

we had a guy get severe powder burns to his jewels during a reenactment. put his gun in his holster and ka-pow....

I'll take my chances on a holster every time. Something about pointing that barrel in that direction just seems like a surefire way to make the Darwin list.

My guess is most of these ADs are with the new style Glock triggers....in the LASD we've been taught to always keep your thumb on the hammer when reholstering...best way to holster a striker fired gun into a soft holster is to remove the holster...place the gun in it...then put it in your pants..that's the way they train us...even with regular double actions....

On a positive note, this maroon won't be spreading his seed, he shot them into oblivion.

As for AD during holstering, you have to know your gun and how to do it with complete safety. In the case of a glock, that probably means removing the holster from you person. It's one reason why I prefer a DA handgun, with the gun uncocked all you have to do is keep a thumb on the hammer while holstering. If that hammer starts to move, it's a sure sing you had better stop and take a look to see what has caught the trigger.

Precisley why I will never carry a striker fired pistol, especially the Glock. 5 pound trigger+ no external safety +no hammer to rest your thumb on while holstering= higher chance of ND's. I'm sure someone will chime in with "my safety is between my ears", but people are not perfect, and even the most experienced gun handler can screw up. Sure, this idiot should have had a holster, but I have seen cops have ND's with Glocks while reholstering, especially in stressful situations, like felony stops or after a chase. Never saw or heard of one with the other two authorized guns, S&W 5946 or SIG 226.

The thing is, it is impossible to shoot that particular body part (not) mentioned if you are using a traditional holster. He was either not using one period, or wearing "thunderwear" or some other kind of strange carry method. I will never have a gun pointing at...anything important.

Not only is this feller going to pay for his mistake the rest of his life, he's going to be ridiculed wherever he goes- if he doesn't leave town. That would be the hardest...let me rephrase that...that would be....oh nevermind!

I bet the guy sings good soprano nowadays. I feel sorry for him and want to make fun of him at the same time! The story does make a good motivational tool to inspire one to pay a little more for a good holster, no doubt, but also makes me happy I love S&W revolvers so much, that wouldn't have happened if he had the same love for 'em like I do!!!

Hopefully, that unfortunate individual learned a valuable lesson.I rather doubt he will ever carry any type of handgun again.

I have long been amazed by those who are willing to spend a lot of hard earned cash for just the right handgun. Then, little, if any thought is given to how it will be carried. Too often, money is foolishly wasted on some sort of junk "holster" that isn't up to the task at hand. Don't even get me started on proper belts. Why do so many gun people place so little value on proper gun leather?

How can you justify a 20 dollar holster loosely wrapped around a 6-12 hundred pistol?

When I look at the pile of holsters I have, some of which haven't been used but a few times, I wonder. But, I always only put a gun in an appropriate holster. I did recently acquire a "plastic" holster, but I haven't been able to make myself put a 1911 in it yet. Just the thought of the nice blue rubbing against that hard plastic makes me cringe. Guns are made to be put in a nice piece of leather.
