Default Need Help -- Old NYPD Holster

Can someone tell me what brand/type/model number of the "typical duty holster" a 1940s-1950s NYPD "beat cop" would have carried his 4-inch S&W M&P revolver in? I'd like to find one but I have no idea what I'm looking for or where to look for it.

If anyone has a picture - front and back, that would sure help.

I found this old Audley on Ebay, but I don't know if it's the type used by NYPD during that time period.

Thanks!

I think the Jay Pee or an equivalent would be it. I had a couple, but they were such an awful design IMHO that I contributed them to the "Empty Holster" college CCW campaign.

The holster looks like a NYPD spec, but not with the swivel. I think the mounted guys had a swivel holster but with a full flap holster.

When I went through the Treasury Academy Police School at 1310 L St., NW in the District of Criminals in 1972/1973 I had an insturctor who was a US Park Police Officer named Willy LeMay. He said that the got in a foot pursuit once and after
a lengthy chase got the perp cornored in an alley. He went to draw his Model 10 Service Weapon and it and the holster were gone. He said the stud holding the swivel holster for his weapon had worn through over the years and he had lost his weapon and didn't know it during the chase. He said they found it several blocks aways. As for the Perp, he didn't have any trouble with getting him arrested. Luck beats skill most of the time.

I never did care for most of the leather worn by the Eastern PDs of that era. Most of the officers in Texas I worked with in the early 70s wore high ride types of holsters.

Holster maker Chic Gaylord had some pretty scathing remarks about those JayPee holsters in his book, "Handgunner's Guide." Some may have been his sales hype, but others agree, in the main.

I sure wouldn't wear one, if I had a choice.

Most Texas cops then wore a variation of the Border Patrol or the Jordan holster. Some liked the old Tom Threepersons style.

The 50's snub I bought from an x-cop came to me in a Jay-Pee basket weave holster. Not sure how widespread they were though.

Pat Rogers had some pretty scathing commentary about the JayPee holsters, too. If you want one for collector/historical purposes, they are probably around if you look. If it is for any other type of use, pay someone to administer slap therapy until you recover your sense.
