Question for the leather workers here
I'm about out of leather, and need to get some soon. I've been learning this past year, and using veg tanned double shoulders from Tandy with good results. I feel they are kind of high for the quality, but I've been catching them on sale occasionally for $2.99 per SF. I haven't seen that in a while. Is there a source for better leather for holster making, or cheaper, or both? Where do you buy your leather? Thanks, Greg

I usually get mine from Tandy also. There is a small leather shop run by 2 brothers that I've bought some from but they don't have much to choose from. I have read about some other places you can order from but I don't remember the names. I'm not much on ordering things. I like to see the item I'm buying before I pay for it. It's just me, I'm weird like that. Maybe some of the other guys will post more info.

Thanks. I am a member of a leatherworker forum. They tell you that Tandy stuff sucks, but have a hard time giving specifics on what is better and why. I may just stick with what I know works.

I'm no leather worker, but I have bought leather, tools and dye from Oregon Leather (the Portland store) and they always had what I needed.

Check out some of the advertisers on leatherworker.net, you should be able to find anything you need. FWIW the guy that manages the local Tandy's makes unbelieveable custom holsters and western style gunbelts, he sources his leather from outside suppliers...

TR utility grade hides like those sold by firms like Tandy or Weaver, etc., are usually poor quality and appeal to hobby crafters because they can be purchased in small quantities at low cost. Most all are hides of dubious origin and tanned abroad, many in South America. If you can get Hermann Oak leather from a distributor you'll pay a little more but it's better quality than the TR grade stuff. The waste ratio on their shoulders is a little higher, but overall better quality.
#1 premium full grain veg tanned USA shoulders or double shoulders may run as much as $8 to$12 per sq. ft., but their worth every nickel. If you order from a distributor, that's what you need to insist upon. Many have minimums so be prepared to fork it over if you really want the best material.
Cheers;
Lefty
