New gun leather stinks
And is oily. I have only had it about an hour and my hands are slippery, nose burnes a little, and the head hurts.
Sooooo any ideas on how to un-stink, and un oil it.
The next thing is that the holster slides along the belt when I take it off and on while the 686 is in it. Any thoughts on how to keep this from happening? I have a few thoughts going on, and a few more once I get some fresh air.

Sounds like it might be one of those factory seconds from Mobil Oil.

Just got some sweet smelling leather from El Paso Saddlery.
A 1942 shoulder rig for a 6" N and a Tom Threepersons for my 3" M-66 field gun.
Smells fine to me.

If you bought an El-Cheapo brand a lot of that is made in Mexico and Africa and they use urine for tanning. Is that the smell you're smelling?

I know this will sound crazy and is slightly off thread, but---- When I was about 8 years old I got in a scrap where I was getting the worst of it for awhile. I remember smelling leather. For many years after that when I was in a dangerous situation, I would smell leather! I would even smell it sometimes before I realised the situation to be dangerous and it would alert me, honest!

Something's not right with your holster. I have lots of both commercial and custom holsters, and none were offensive. I actually like the smell of new leather productl.

Lazy, did that leather come from this country? You know years ago they tanned leather with brains and urine. Maybe they overdone it and the salty urine might rust your gun! That also might acount for your nose burning etc if you have been checking it out too closely!

Just got home a few min ago. It is the oil used on the leather, I wiped it down with a towel for awhile and its not as slick. The holster is just an off the shelf Triple-K holster and cartridge belt, has the same slippery oil smell as the Bianchi holster I was feeling up.
