Default My favorite holster ( & maybe my favorite Smith)

See those threads all the time about if you could only have one gun, another legacy from Skeeter, and the question always causes brain stress. At least it does in me.

I have a hard enough time picking my favorite holster. I admit I am a holsterholic.
This one paired with this revolver may just be it.

Made by Sterling Leather Products, St. Joseph Missouri. I don't have much info on the maker other than a few ads I have found they ran in "Popular Science" in the late 40s-50s.

One speaks obviously to this style holster, "Shoot from the hip with accuracy with front opening holster" or something like that.

More to follow on the pistola riding in it later.

I take it that's a front-opening copy of a Berns-Martin?

I have had the pleasure of handling Lawandorder's revolver and it certainly has a good feel to it. I hope some day to get to shoot it. I know it's not one that he is going to be getting rid of

here is one of the revolver out of the holster...........

It is a 3rd Model HE .44 Special sent to Oshman's for the Houston PD as mentioned earlier. Back to factory in April of 48 for what I suspect is the following ,but not certain,
Barrel cut to 3 1/2 inches
A very unusual grip adapter added to it, similar to one Lee wrote about.
Reblue
Name placed on sideplate, "L. G Schaeffer" in block letters

The grips which seem to be for a Colt SA were probably added at a later time.
Will try to get a close up or two of the grip adapter and the front opening of the "Super Speed" holster.

Had to run Ol NKJ through the metal detector when he headed out the door.
Sure wish I knew the whole story on this one. If it could only talk.

Default Found a neat item to go with this holster........

a vintage Sterling Leather Products brochure. I believe this one is from 1949 and was mailed to the Detective Department, Police Headquarters, Gary, Indiana.

According to the enclosed price list the Sterling "Super Speed" holster in Russet and Genuine Hand Carved was $13.99.

Neat holster Tony. Appears to incorporate design characteristics of several other manufacturers of the day. Even plays off the name "Super Speed" as opposed to the old Safety Speed holsters.

well, yes. It was sometimes called a billy club. or a nightstick. Our Brit friends call it a truncheon. In formal, training circles, it's a baton, or an "impact weapon". Mostly, guys just call it a "stick", as in "so I hit him a good hard lick upside the knee with my stick, and he went down like a sack of (fill in the blank)."

Default "Me too".

There was a question asked, by LT JL, "Am I the only one who admired the baton?". I can't resist adding my "Me Too". I only have two "Billy Clubs", My Dad's old hickory, club, and One that belonged to the Chief of Police, of a small town near the one that I grew up in and still live in. My Dad was issued his club to direct traffic etc. at first at a greyhound race track, in the 1920 era, and then at a thoroughbred horse racing track, later, in the 1930 era. The story, that came with the ebony club, was that an arrested criminal took the club away from it's owner and killed him with it. The holster was made to fit a K Mod. 4" revolver, is unmarked, and a bit risqu'e, but fits a 4" K Mod. S&W nicely, and the leather work pleases me. It's probably not my first choice, but, close. Please overlook my usual long winded tale.

Chubbo

No doubt about it L&O, that is a great choice for a favorite holster.
And the gun with it, even Jelly would be jealous.

My favorite holster is probably the Myres #614 shown on the left below.
I believe it was made for a 3.5" N frame, so my 4" model 29 is just a
tad too long to seat up snug against the welt as it should.

I probably carry my 642 more than any of the others, and my favorite
holster for it is this Chic Gaylord speed scabbard that I got from John
a while back. (2nd from left)

The Brill-Persons holster and Ranger belt, 3rd from left, was a gift from
my friend Red Nichols. Shown with my 1911 Colt's Gold Cup. They will
have to pry this rig from "my cold dead hands."

This Heiser #728, with my Colt, 4th from left, has been known to cause
some serious drooling. It is quite attractive in my opinion.

Last, 5th from left, but definately not least, is this Lawrence 34V pigskin
FBI style Special Agent holster. Shown with my S&W Model 10 2" barrel.
I searched longer and harder for it than any other holster I own. Along
the way I became acquainted with some interesting folks, George's
great grandson Bill Lawrence for instance. He was running the company
when they sold to Gould & Goodrich.

PS Clic on the thumbnail to enlarge. Clic on the photo to enlarge again,
and clic again on the photo to enlarge even more.
